The verdicts are out in Hong Kong's largest national security case to date. In January 2021, 47 pro-democracy figures were arrested in a dawn raid for organizing and participating in an unofficial primary vote. They are accused of subversion, a serious crime under the national security law imposed by Beijing that is punishable by up to life in prison. 31 already pleaded guilty. Among the 16 that have pleaded not guilty, 14 have been found guilty of subversion including former journalist Gwyneth Ho. Up to now, the state has won every national security case. Two former district councillors (Lawrence Lau and Lee Yue-shun) are the first national security law defendants to be acquitted after trial. Critics say the national security law has been used to crush the opposition movement. Chinese authorities say it's a matter of national security and warned against any foreign interference. Observers say this trial is a test of Hong Kong's judicial independence. CNN's Kristie Lu Stout reports from the West Kowloon Magistrates' Court.
