Star Cafe in Tsim Sha Tsui has been open since the 1960s, and this soon-to-be-demolished cafe has gained a reputation for serving up its famous vomit noodles! We sought out this foodie institution and sampled their delicious -if a little unsightly- noodles, and chatted to the cafe's manager about the food and the history behind them.

Just discovered your vlog and I honestly think it's the best one on this platform in showcasing HK street food culture. Your narration and videography hit all the right notes without any pretension or gimmickry. I was raised in Kowloon in the early 70s before emigrating to Canada and I am taken by the feeling of nostalgia you capture in your vlogs. Congratulations.

Welcome to the channel, and thank you for your incredibly kind words! We try to make these videos as authentic and genuinely reflective of the neighbourhoods/street food scenes as possible, so it gives us great pleasure to get such a comment as yours. We hope to continue to bring you nostalgia and memories of your childhood in our upcoming videos.

What a heart attack until Sam dared to eat that VOMIT noodle in front of the camera ! And surprisingly Sam endorsed his approval that the noodle is an excellent meal. Without your guidance and recommendations, i guess it is very hard to find and locate that restaurant in that busy tourist area. We believe you Sam and we will try that noodle when we next visit Hong Kong ! Thanks !

@@HongKongHoods Yes, it really was a place for alternative activities 20 years ago, but I believe the ladies grew older and found husbands from punters (Happy endings indeed!) and the managers moved to Yuen Long and Tsuen Wan and enticed another generation of young ladies from Dongguan.

By giving the owners of these hidden places a voice to express their idea of food and sense history really catapulted your channel to a higher realm than just a tourist guide or being exotic for exotic sake. You always present them with context and with no condescension. Many of these other food/travel videos oftentimes reek of ethnocentrism. Your channel treat these people and places with dignity and respect which you in turn deserve the viewers' respect. You've done your homework and research but you also keep it lighthearted with a sense of humor on top of high production value. I'm so glad to have discovered your channel by accident. Your channel should have over a million subscribers! Keep going!

Thank you so much for the incredibly kind words! It's always been our ethos to first-and-foremost shed light on the places - and perhaps even more so the people - that make Hong Kong truly special and unique. Without sounding corny, it really has been amazing to meet a lot of these folks and not just learn about what they're doing, but also take in their outlooks and learn from their experience navigating this ever-changing city. It's a story we're very privileged to be able tot ell, and we'll keep going with it for as long as we can, documenting and promoting these facets of local culture. Thanks for watching, and more videos coming soon!

As far as I am concerned, tomatoes noodles with mixed eggs is one of the simple home dishes that are not too difficult to make. That being said, that place certainly brings up lots of memories of old Hong Kong. It is definitely a good place for those who are interested in Hong Kong history. I'm not sure if it is still there by the time I watched this video! Hopefully I'll get to visit there soon!

First look I probably wouldn’t eat it but after knowing what it is I probably would, tomatoes and egg I already eat but with white rice sometimes with noodles. The name is what throws me off, I used to get carsick and throw up; that smell and taste in my mouth is something I’ll never forget. Knowing that smell then seeing that name it doesn’t go together
@HongKongHoods
@HongKongHoods 2 года назад
Thanks for watching Emily. It is purely a nickname affectionately given to the dish by locals. In truth there’s nothing vomit-like about the taste at all, just a good old flavour of Hong Kong 🇭🇰

Dying store for me should be given a chance because what people would like to see in any country is the genuine culture of Hong Kong.

This dish in Chinese is called tomato egg noodle, not vomit noodle. I feel it is disrespectful to describe it as such. Tomato egg is a very popular comfort dish in Chinese cuisine, be it in soup, with rice or noodle. In general, I like yr channel b/c you go to hidden gems and allow vendors to talk about their stall's history, but I do not care for yr sensational renaming of this dish as "vomit noodle". Just saying...
@HongKongHoods
@HongKongHoods 2 года назад
Thank you for your comment and we’re sorry you feel this way. The fact remains though that Star Cafe’s tomato egg noodles have been referred to for years by locals as ‘vomit noodles’ and, far from derogatory, this nickname comes from a place of affection and adoration. If you watch the video in its entirety, I’m sure you’ll agree that our coverage of Star Cafe is entirely reverential. As with all our videos we aim here to respectfully promote what we view as an underexposed hidden gem, and if a catchy title means more clicks and more potential visitors to this place, that’s fine with us.
