Short matches? I remember Dusty being in more than a few matches that were 45 minutes or longer. Dusty was always one of my favorites growing up. I personally like the Midnight Rider angle he did when he got "Banned".
I seen many matchs in Miami at the Convention Center with Dusty vs Rick Flair, Terry Funk, Harley Race, Adrian Street, Kevin Sullivan, and Leroy Brown and they were all long. There was a match he had with Ox Baker that went on forever and they beat the crap out of each other. Maybe in the WWF they were short but in Miami in the '70s he had the longest matches of the night.
CommentatorDeluxe people laughed at the warrior literally until the day he died. They thought that speech he made was stupid until he passed away, then it's super inspirational. I laugh at the wwe how they praise warrior now, when before they made a DVD for the express purpose of shitting on him
@@kpax45 plenty liked him and plenty resented him and others hated him...theRoad Warriors, Jim Cornette, Kevin Sullivan, and other loved him or liked him. Ron and Jimmy Garvin didn't like him...Rock and Roll Express liked him but resented him at times.
I had the pleasure of talking to Ricky Morton (one half of the Rock n Roll Express) about a year and half ago at a show in western North Carolina. He made similar statements about Dusty. Not so much as wrestler but as a promoter regarding his hype and big talk. Ricky further talked about how when Dusty was promoter in the old Crockett territory he would consistently put himself in six man tag team matches with the Rock n Roll Express due to the fact they were so hot at the time in order to keep his own status elevated. Ronnie Garvin also echoes similar statements.
The rock and roll express have even said that Dusty got mad at them for drawing money and being over because he wasn’t on the card in the towns they were at. Dusty even told them at.
When was Dusty ever in shape? LOL! He was loved for his showmanship and cool demeanor. Dusty helped make wrestling a viable business through the decades. HTM, not so much.
When he started out as one of The Texas Outlaws with Dick Murdoch in The AWA in the late Sixties, Dusty Rhodes was a young Heel and in good physical shape from his time in West Texas State University Football.🤔🎤🏈B.W.
Totally..... or tv time limit, and the match was still going when the time was up for TV... I remember Tony Schiavone saying "We'll have to show ya what happened... NEXT WEEK!"
This was Dusty Rhodes’ first PPV, Summerslam ‘89, there’s no way he gave his notice as he was still with the WWF at Royal Rumble 1991, when he did the job for DiBiase and Virgil.
FFKDTP1 NOT VERY OFTEN...Considering he was a second-rate, unproven hack when Vince placed the Intercontinental belt on him -- totally trivializing and desecrating the credibility of the belt for YEARS -- and THEN letting him carry it longer than Randy Savage, you would THINK he would express humility and appreciation for the REAL talent he was given to compete against for SO long! But, NOOOOOO! Wayne Ferris, cousin of Jerry Lawler, would rather take POT SHOTS at people who had MORE talent on their PINKIE finger than he had in his WHOLE body! He's a disgrace to wrestling, and I HOPE he NEVER gets inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame!!!
CommentatorDeluxe the ONLY reason he was given the IC belt was as punishment to Steamboat, who won the Title at WM against Savage, but he had requested time off to be with his wife and newborn baby... was a last minute decision because the person he was supposed to face did not show up, so HTM got it then WWF was stuck with it
Dusty vs the horsemen was not short...especially the steel cages and war games matches...dusty also played basketball with other wrestlers for charity...its on RU-vid....crazy bitterness
dusty always had short matches. like the 60 minute draws he had with ric flair just a few years prior to summerslam 89? and he gave his notice at this point yet he was still at wrestlemania 6 the next year. htm is full of shit on this one
Just because he might not remember the timeline, doesn’t mean it didn’t happen. Dusty, Honky and Koko all finished up around the same time, late 90, early 91
Dusty had a kick your ass attitude Saw a match with Terry Funk . It got real fast They were bashing each other with chairs , boards it went outsidre the armory
It's always funny how people bash someone for exposing another person for being a prick because that person died recently. When Warrior died it didn't erase all the homphobic speeches he cut and now Dusty's death doesn't change the fact that he absolutely sucked as a booker. Should those two still be celebrated for their careers? Absolutely yes, but they weren't angels when they were live, nobody was.
The Great American Bash, WarGames, The Midnight Rider angle in Florida...booking the the hottest territory until he got burned out in JCP. Causing near riots at times because of his booking with Flair and the Andersons, the Rnr Xpress, turning a Russian heel to a face. Yeah...he really sucked.
@@randallguzik3764 actually, the RnR Express was a big thing before Dusty Rhodes and JCP, and there were times where Dusty was trying to split them up because they would outdraw him.
Is there any wrestling promoter or head booker who doesn't fit this description? It is a cut-throat business where the people in charge are ruthless. Wrestlers pursue this career knowing they are independent contractors. They aren't going to get a boss who is caring, generous and makes sure everyone has job security.
He ain't the only one with a bad opinion of Dusty Rhodes. Ronnie Garvin couldn't stand Dusty Rhodes, and the Rock N Roll Express were quite critical of him as well.
Honky wrestled Dusty right after Dusty had just arrived in WWE, so Honky's recollection of Dusty having given his notice to leave the company is not accurate.
Yeah, Dusty had only been in the WWF for a few months at the time (Summerslam 1989) and didn't leave for nearly 1 1/2 years later (right after the 1991 Royal Rumble). So Honky's memory about this is foggy at best.
Lawler didn't get him that job. Lawler will even tell you that. Jerry Jarrett gave him that opportunity. Lawler told him he had to earn a job and he did.
@Tony Black For 2 years. Then it died almost instantly. He never got back over and he thinks it was a conspiracy to hold him down. He never drew a dime anywhere outside of 87-88.
Honky doesn’t have his facts straight. Rhodes had just come in from WCW around Summerslam 89. He wouldn’t leave to return to WCW until after Royal Rumble 1991, which was the conclusion of his feud with Ted DiBiase.
A few wrestlers have said in shoots that Dusty refused to take calls after he'd promised them spots in WCW. koko, Martell, and Bad News Brown as far as I know.
MrMetalover666 Yes, even when they asked Mean Gene Okerlund a few years ago on an RF shoot what his thoughts were about Dusty, he gave a smirked face and said "Dusty did very well for Dusty". And if you can read between the lines you know what Gene thought of Dusty Rhodes. So that the big fat whale lied and had a big mouth is no surprise. Rest In Peace but that does not change the fact he was the shits both in and out of the ring.
Other shoots have Okerlund saying really nice things about Rhodes. Dusty wasn't in charge of hiring in 1991, he was in charge of booking TV and house shows. Jim Herd and Kip Allen Frye were in charge of hiring. Plus Watts came in later and was told to fire Dusty, but instead worked with Dusty and reigned in his ideas. Martel is still in WWF when Dusty was no longer in charge, Roberts came in along with Orndorff and JYD in 1992/1993 because of Watts. Flair was in charge for part of 1993 before Bischoff...who hired HTM, but refused to do a job and quit.
@@randallguzik3764 It must've been 91' when Dream told Honk, Birdman and Dino that. Dream and Honk left early 91', and Dino wasn't on WWF TV after Mania' 7 (unless it was Quebec). Which might be one answer as to why Dino didn't go to WCW.
If there is any truth to this tale (HTM is famous for being full of shit), it would likely be that Dusty probably thought he'd get the Book when he went back to WCW. But he was basically little more than an announcer and part-time road agent. So any pull he thought he might get at WCW regarding hiring talent was nonexistent.
The impact Rhodes had on wrestling can’t be overlooked, but I would rather forget that WWF run. He looked like an idiot wearing polka dots, and he wasn’t allowed to really cut loose on promos, which was as important to his legacy as his in ring work. It is too bad his Florida promotion failed after he left Crockett. He never would have called Vince.
I really like htm. I think he's a great storyteller. But I have never seen ANYONE that he's really positive about. Anyone. That's significant. Makes me think he TOO is often part of the problem. But the guy is funny and entertaining as hell. Thats undeniable. The rest is just conjecture and speculation.
HTM timeline is off here with his match and Dusty's notice but I always give passes on recollection as long as the main point is there. To be fair to HTM, by the time Dusty got in WWF, he was older & had short matches because WWF was using him as a midcarder & those matches were always short. To be fair to Dusty, I am sure his intentions were good to all 3 of them but by the time he got back in WcW it was a shit show with Jim Herd & he probably couldn't do anything for Koko
How far and long did HTM think that Elvis gimmick was gonna last with McMahon and the fans..Should have changed him to Col. Parker would have made a better heel..
I call BS on this. This match he is talking about was at the beginning of Dusty’s run in the wwf. He was around for nearly a year and a half after this. Tell the damn truth.!
Dusty Rhodes was an overrated wrestler that was given power and when he had that power he used it to benefit himself and his friends. And you can see that familiarity in AEW today with his midcarder son.
