The anniversary of Meat Loaf's passing is this Friday, 1/20, and I wanted to not only return to his work, but also marvel in his exceptional talent. Very few artists enunciate as well as Meat Loaf does, and "Bat Out of Hell" truly showcases that extreme talent. I am so grateful for having the opportunity to hear his music now, and revel in the beauty of his work.
Join professional opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff, as she analyzes Meat Loaf performing "Bat Out of Hell" for the first time.

I know this premiere is up early, but it's a tribute to Meat Loaf's passing (which the anniversary of is this Friday) and wanted to give the best heads up for all of you to attend the live premiere. Additionally, if you can't wait and haven't seen it yet, I recently released a video on how bats and harsh metal vocalists use their laryngeal structure the same here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-wLRZLKpXx5A.html Thank you everyone for your support!

"Bat Out Of Hell" is on my personal short list of perfect rock albums, with every song having an epic feel. Meat Loaf's energy, passion, and ability to apply raw emotion to compelling musical stories make him, IMO, the unequaled rock and roll balladeer. It was a sad day when we lost this great talent, and I fear we will not see his equal again in my life time. Thank you for doing this homage and sharing your insights with us.

Wow Elizabeth, this is one of your finest examples of outstanding analysis. Virtually all of the songs written by the one and only Jim Steinman are mini operas and Meatloaf was the finest purveyor of their dramatic content. I wore out both my original vinyl record and later cassette of this album but thankfully the CD has stood the test of time.

Meat Loaf is mesmerizing to watch perform. He put every single ounce of his considerable weight into every song he sang. Gloriously raw and expressive. And supposed to have been a really good man as well. He was a cult icon for a reason. Glad you get him. And kudos to Jim Steinman who wrote almost all of his music. RIP to both of them - they died the same year.

The song that defined Meatloaf and a generation. Pure Steinman, if you heard one of his solo songs you would swear it was a Meatloaf song. His writing ability and Meatloaf's singing ability together were shear perfection. When this song came out there was nothing bigger. And yes the extended version has a longer guitar intro which is also amazing.

Jim Steiman's solo Ablum Bad For Good was meant to be Meatloafs second album following from Bat Out of Hell, but Meat had vocal problems at the time and couldn't record it, so eventually Steinman sang and released it himself as he couldn't be sure Meat would ever be able to record it. By the way, Steinman does a brilliant job on Bad For Good, he's not Meat but he does a very good attempt at doing it in Meat's style.

Hello Elizabeth, I've been watching your channel almost ever since you started it. I absolutely love what you do. I think what you should do with meatloaf is, do all of the songs from bat out of hell, and do them in the order in which they are on the album. Every song on the album is phenomenal. Meatloaf's passion is the most amazing thing I've ever heard or seen when it comes to singing. I never had the opportunity to see him in concert, but I have seen concerts of him on video and on RU-vid. Hopefully someday you will sit down and play the whole album and truly listen to it. You will find it amazing. I hope you have a wonderful day.

There are musicians that I deem as freaks of nature, not a freak in a bad way but a good way in that no one else can do what they could with the right song. Meatloaf was a one of a kind and there will never be another one to replace him. Talented not only in singing but expression, acting and showmanship. Rarely does the world get the whole package rolled up in one. I miss Meatloaf and I know he will RIP. He was a God-fearing man, and I know he is entertaining in heaven.

This is a great “blue collar” rock opera album. I say blue collar in the sense that the analogies and concepts are just being honest and open. In Two Out of Three Ain’t Bad there’s a line that says “But you’ve been cold to me so long I’m crying icicles instead of tears” and in For Crying Out which is a beautiful love song done with just a piano but one of the lines says “For pulling me away when I'm starting to fall For revving me up when I'm starting to stall And all in all for that I want you”

Meat was asthmatic and there was always an oxygen tank at the side of the stage. He also travelled with three differing sizes of clothing, cos he would loose soooo much when on tour from the live performances!!! So that shows HOW much he put into singing!! Broke my heart when Meat died. Fell in love with him and his music at 13, after watching the Rocky Horror Picture Show and Meat playing Eddie and singing Hot Patootie. I’m 45 this year and still love him and his music. People think I’m weird that I find his music so calming, so relaxing, when there’s so much in each song. When I die, if I cannot donate my body to science, I want Bat Outta Hell played loud while the coffin slides back and the curtains close, for cremation xxx

As a teenager this whole album was constantly playing/blaring on cassette in the car and vinyl in the house, pumped through a set of AR90s and a Marshall stack, courtesy of my music mad brothers. So much of this album was regarded as "mood" music because of its driving rhythms and climactic crescendos... many conceptions were made in the era because of this music... it's one of those albums that will forever be timeless classic rock and so very very beautiful. The world has lost some of the greatest artists of our time but their music will be with us always...RIP Michael and Jim...🥺

Speaking of his words that are so clear, before he was known, he auditioned for a role on the rocky horror picture show. When he came on stage the director instantly dismissed him as he was a large man. But he was the only one who could sing every word at the right speed and reach the back of the theatre. And so eddy was born. I love meatloaf. He was my introduction to music and created my love for his sound. Bat out of hell, back I to hell was the first cd I ever brought. That one lyric, is I’m gonna hit the highway like a battering ram on a silver/black Phantom Bike! Also this entire album is a Rock Opera/Concept album, in that with this being the opening song, where our hero is dying after a motorcycle accident… the rest of the album is him remembering all of the key moments of his life up to that point. The rock opera version of the proverbial’life passing before your eyes’ … sheer brilliance, and an all time powerful voice. And to think He wasn’t on Tolling Stones top 200 all time voices. But then again neither was Geoff Tate or Steve Perry. Which immediately discredits that entire list. Obviously RS puts out these ridiculous lists to create controversy just to try and stay relevant.

I am a bit surprised you did the two songs in reverse order, since they are part 1 and part 2 of the same song. You just happened to do part two first and that took a little meaning out of it in the process. We were all pretty shocked when he added a finale to his original hit. He didn't disappoint. The way I relate to this powerful song is this: There is this very unhappy young man who hates where he is. ("Nothing ever grows in this rotting old hole. Everything is stunted and lost. And nothing really rocks and nothing really rolls and nothing's really worth the cost") But he has one bright light, his love. He is going to get out come hell or high water but had one last night with her before he makes his break for it. He is finally going for it, he is getting out but she is still on his mind and "never see's the curve till it's way too late". But that isn't going to stop his soul/heart from getting out & it triumphs over death and cannot be held back. When he says that somebody somewhere must be tolling a bell means he's an angel. (like in "It's a wonderful life"getting his wings) At the very end there's a soft kind of humming that sound like angels. A kind of ethereal sound. So to me, he made it out. Still sad but triumphant. It's a angry song through most of it. I always turned the sound up very loud for this song. On the same side there's another soft pretty song called Heaven can wait. So I followed up Bat out of Hell with Heaven can wait. I couldn't leave it angry because it got to me so much. I could relate too much.

The end cry "Like a Bat out of Haeeeeell!!" reminds me of The "Freedom!" cry at the end of Braveheart.

For me, one favourit work of his is the duett with Cher 'Dead Ringer for Love', which is a less known Grease-style song. The live version with Patti Russo and the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra (2004) is also remarkable.

When the album first came out (and in the days when you had to physically walk into a Record Bar at the mall to buy them), a friend's grandmother had asked her what she wanted for Christmas. She told her grandmother she wanted this particular album. So grandmother strode into the unfamiliar store and looked around in confusion, not knowing where to start. The store employee asked if she needed help, to which the perplexed elder lady responded, "Yes, I'd like Pork Chop 'Go To Hell'". And we've called it that ever since...

Have to remember at the time of the release of Bat Out Of Hell meatloaf was an anomaly, there was nothing like him, there was always the feeling of a rock opera, dramatic well produced, and naturally an ode to Rocky Horror and his performance as Eddie. Have a listen to Paradise By The Dashboard Lights. Thanks again, im loving your analysis its making look at vocalists differently and deeper.

Opus magnum together with that epic crying out loud of Steinmann. Just such a brilliant song in the best album ever.

Jim Steinman was without doubt one of the greatest song writter and arrangers that ever lived. This is the anthem of my life and I will never hear the likes again. Can you imagine how we feel today when this was our introduction to music, nothing I repeat nothing today comes close to to this.

One thing I always admired about Meatloaf is that it felt like every song he sang was his last. Mad respect for his commitment to his craft!

Talking of standout lead singers in bands - how about reviewing Justin Hayward/Moody Blues with their epic songs list - "Nights & White Satin" - "Forever Autumn" - "Isn't life Strange" - "Nights Winters Years" - "Have You Heard" - "Watching and Waiting" - "I Dreamed last Night" - "To Our Children's Chidren" - "Threashold of A Dream" - "Insanity Hypnotic" - and many more classic songs they produced. That voice of Justin Hayward is sublime especially when he was in his peak and also especially when they performed at Royal Albert Hall with the World festival orchestra backing them in May 2000

Once in a while I want to hear Paradise and then take Bat as an extra. Such a great album. You giving this tour through the song was a bonus. Learned things. The song stays the same. Great.

"Two Out of Three Ain't" Bad would be a great next Meat Loaf song to check out or "More Than You Deserve" or "Paradise By the Dashboard Light"

IIRC he started out in music theater, which had a HUGE impact on his music, and thus performances. He over exaggerats his mouth movements because in theater, it's important for the audience to see the actor's dialogue as well as hear it.

I only saw him live once (1 May 1993) and he was fantastic! I saw a few live gigs on TV where he was not that great though. This said I am a huge fan. What a story teller and great interpreter of songs! A totally unique singer. And let's not forget that the songs were written by Jim Steinman, one of the greatest genius ever.

Meatloaf is so satisfying to hear. I don't listen to individual songs. I have to listen to the whole album. I feel like album music is going away these days. Usually it's one or 2 good songs with a bunch of filler material. This album is one of my favorite driving tunes.

The late Jim Steinman (playing the 88s) was a genius in his orchestration of this epic piece of work. You can also find this same epic quality in Bonnie Tyler's Total Eclipse Of The Heart. Another Jim Steinman epic song. I'd like to hear your take on that one....
