I am so used to seeing Meat Loaf in films that his performance in Kickapoo and this song did not surprise me one bit. Directed by Michael Bay, this seven minute dive into a Beauty and the Beast-esque or Phantom of the Opera type romance was pretty spectactular, and from what I read, ran way over budget. In the end, I feel it was totally worth it!

So true. Technical singing skill is amazing, but it is only part of a Performance, and Meatloaf may not have been the very best technical singer (even though he was incredible), but he gave some of the very best performances.

If that wasn't enough, he also had both asthma AND a heart condition. There are stories about the show ending and him _immediately_ collapsing, clutching his chest, and just GASPING for air, while people nonchalantly went about their business because they were used to him doing it after _every single_ performance. Was he a hell of a performer? Absolutely. No doubt. Unquestionably. Was it worth the damage it did to his body and the years it took off his life? Hell no.

Meat Loaf once said his voice is not naturally a Rock voice, " I had to learn how to sing Bat Out Of Hell, my voice is naturally an Opera voice", he was described as a Heldentenor, or Heroic Tenor, and he was once offered $60,000 to train his voice and open at the Met, he said " I turned it down, if I hadn't I'd be in jail for the murder of some Conductor, I'm an Opera Singer with a rebellious Rock & Roll spirit" it is said he could sing 3 octaves, and in his last concert he still sang all of his songs in the same octave as he sang them, in his 20s, how many artists could do that.... he was Phenomenal... Rest In Peace Meat Loaf. It's unlikely we'll see your like again any time soon

3 octave range isn’t really impressive. Corey Taylor from Slipknot has a 6 octave range. Well Corey has a 5.5 octave range. Mike Patton from Faith No More/ Mr. Bungle has a 6 octave range.

It's strange that I find Bay's commercials and Videos so good at capturing intensity. 'Sizzle', but HATE that in long form movies where it feels like all flash and no substance. Loved his work on this video though. Patrick (H) Willems has a really great look at Bay's work in a two-part video essay.

The writer Jim Steinman did some fantastic compositions. When it comes to drumming the one song I come to think of is Faster than the speed of night by Bonnie Tyler. Usually it is the drums that keeps the beat but there it is rather the piano keeping the beat with lets the drums play more freely which I really like, they are played by Max Weinberg from E street band. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-y1yTMT4VvcI.html

Jim Steinman was a complete genius when it came to writing the songs that Meat Loaf brought to life in such an indescribable way. If you ever get the chance to see Bat Out Of Hell The Musical, then go. You will not be disappointed. Opening night in Manchester, England, the theatre must have wondered what they had let themselves in for. People in jeans and leather, guys in suits, girls in long dresses all were there. It was a fantastic night.

Absolutely 50% of success, confirmed by "Bonnie Tyler," as well as long forgotten "Fire inc." so far as movie "streets of fire". It's worth looking into, I promise. But Meatloaf himself is classic. Lucky to have seen him live and even talk to after given microphone to ask question about original "Bat Out Of Hell" classic recorded in Woodstock proper.

As a large guy, who has sung (badly) and plays bass, Meatloaf was always one of my hero's not just because of his talent, but because he inspired people like me to overcome our self worth issues and become something better than we would have otherwise been. I can not listen to Meatloaf without tears any more. I hope he knew how much he meant to people like me, apart from Music.

Sorry, but Steinman was a great poet, but Meatloaf was the brilliance that put together the musical arrangement and was also the front man. I don't discount Steinman's contribution, but he wasn't the musical genius many people seem to think he was. If it wasn't for Meatloaf's amazing voice, I doubt anyone would even know who Steinman was. @@Cyannah117

The beautiful thing about Meatloaf is he wasn’t just a vocalist, he was a true performer! He had a stage show that reached out to you and pulled you in with the theatrics, the singing painting a story and grabbing your emotions, etc. especially at the end of the video where he looks at her and then looks directly into the camera, staring at you as he finishes his ballad. I absolutely love the live versions where he shares the stage with Patti Russo. Meatloaf was truly one of a kind RIP big meat! Side fact: Michael Bay directed this video! And, sadly, Lorraine didn’t quite get the credit she deserved. She was labeled as Mrs. loud in the song credits and cut out of some royalties because they said she recorded her part as “guide vocals”

Btw. the music video was directed by Michael Bay, which explains this whole ''cinematic look''. Yes, THE Michael Bay. He also directed a couple of other music videos for Meat Loaf, during the early 90's. Michael Bay started his career in the music video production company, owned by David Fincher, who also was a famous music video director before going to Hollywood. (George Michael's ''Freedom'' music video is directed by Fincher). Bay oftens cites in interviews, how much he learned about film making from David Fincher, while working under him. If you check out the music video for Aerosmith's ''Janie's got a Gun'', directed by David Fincher, you can see so many similarities in the visuals with this here. Also, I highly recommend to check out the live versions of this song, specially the ones with Patti Rousso as Meat's duet partner.

There is something truly special being done on this channel. There is an openness, innocence and child-like joy that truly seems to come from a pure love of the medium. Unlike expected human nature, you perpetually seem to be able to seek understanding and appreciation of things that are new, different and differently-perfect, rather than stand in judgement, elevate yourself or otherwise devalue some things over others. I love the way she is physically reacting to this song. Thats the way it was meant to be. Meatloaf was epic in every song he sang. He is 1 of the few reasons i hate that we all get old & move on from this world. His music was soooo great !

Fun fact: Meatloaf never had a single voice lesson until right before recording Bat Out of Hell 3, and this was only for therapy after losing his voice so many times during his career. He always pushed his voice for the emotional output and was actually damaging his vocal chords. Every song was a play and he was definitely the method actor that brought them to life and lived them.

I always loved the Beauty & the Beast element to the video where you've got this guy that looks, feels, and would most likely be judged by society as monstrous. But the moment she accepts him, he's healed. I think it's a much deeper and more beautiful message than you'd initially think would be present in something like this.

I did not actually know that Meat Loaf had died until I watched this video. I'm gutted. Way back in 1985 or 1986 (I'm not sure, because, ya know, getting old), my friends and I caught him live in Downtown Dallas. There was a marketplace/mall sort of thing that sponsored free Monday night concerts during the Summer. One of those shows was Meat Loaf. We had been fans since Bat Out of Hell, but he had been off the radar for several years at that point. Oh my freaking god, he was amazing! Best live performance I have ever seen except for Cheap Trick. His passion, his energy, his power was just insane! He was sweating buckets in the Dallas summer heat. But he finished just as strong as he started. Holy smokes! Totally amazing! The words that always came to mind for me when thinking about him were POWER and PASSION. And his ability to completely display his heart and soul through his singing, to me, was only ever matched by Stevie Ray Vaughn on guitar. Truly a legend.

jim steinman is an absolute genius when it comes to writing music. he chose meat loaf to perform his songs for a reason, they were the perfect match made in heaven if there ever was one. and i especially love that meat loaf's late mum, a professional singer herself, once said he couldn't hold a single note, only for him to prove her completely wrong.

Technically, he does slide those notes around as she said.. but I believe MeatLoaf, like myself…. Sings with passion, Which is very rare, ala Nina Simone, Marc Anthony, Chris Stapleton, Celine Dion (who don’t get me wrong, sings not only passionately , but with immaculate technical ability. However I prefer her voice to say Maria, who can sing technically accurate, but I don’t hear true passion) which is far more impressive, as well as appealing to listen too. Just my Opinion. The entire Bat out of hell 2 album is brilliant, Steinman's writing and meaty's singing was just a perfect match. First celebrity death I think I mourned in earnest. When life got particularly rough in childhood, I'd always hide with my walkman and this album as an escape. Thank you Elizabeth for covering this. Maybe something to consider, Michael Bay (yeah the explosiony guy) directed this video, so maybe do the others as well? Very theatrical, if nothing else you'll probably be very entertained.

One of my favorite things about Meatloaf is how he actually did not sing easily or naturally at all. He worked so hard to sound the way he did and ran into a lot of issues later on because of how he sang. It was not effortless at all for him.

Between my older siblings and I, we've owned the original Bat Out Of Hell on vinyl, cassette, 8-track, CD, and mp3. When Steinman left us and I found out he also wrote "Total Eclipse of the Heart" I was amazed that I hadn't put 2 and 2 together there. That song is painfully Steinman, and it's awesome.

Also, not enough people give props to the female vocalist who joins in with this. She was a bit of a cipher I think; especially when people figured out about the video tricks being done. She deserved a lot more interest from the business, especially in the long version when you get more back and forth between them and she really shows her chops.

I saw you never checked out the band 'Sonata Arctica'. It's also a finnish metalband like 'Nightwish'. The singer Tony Kakko has an incredible voice. And if you, as an opera singer, doesn't get curious just by the name 'SONATA ARCTICA', then I don't know what does 😉.. The song 'White pearl, Black Oceans' (live) would be a perfect start! 🙂🙌🏼

I'd like her more if she'd quit stopping the video every few seconds and just listen to the darn song! Then review it. I don't know how reviewers can give honest reviews when they talk so much through the whole thing. I've unfollowed so many of them for that. JUST LISTEN to the song, THEN give the review. Jim' Stainman & Meatloaf were a perfect match. Meatloaf brought out the epicness of Stainman's songs. Jim's solo works missed that voice. The songs were still good but they needed the power & emotion of meatloaf. Now they are both gone but the work they did together still stands as something special in music. A match like that doesn't come along every day.

I'd suggest if you don't know it, the album Pandora's Box, most of the songs got recycled on later Meatloaf Albums, but with that group of female, usually backing singers, taking the lead, it rocks. Though Jims noodley spoken word bits do tier after a while.

My mother used to hear this song on the radio when she was working and it would always confuse her because she could never quite put together what he would not do, and for years it troubled her until one day I bought her a copy of Meatloaf Behind the Music (or something similar) and she heard the commentary and I remembered how her eyes lit up as she realized it was that he would remain faithful and devoted and that was a brilliant point in my adolescence.

As a hard rock guy, I have no shame at all saying I LOVED MEAT LOAF’S SINGING! My buddies who are hard rock musicians like myself used to give me such a hard time for listening to and loving his music and singing. I think I commented on one of your videos about Meat Loaf before, but my friends used to say he was too theatrical for them. But then they would praise Ronnie James Dio, as I did also. And if there were ever 2 of the best theatrical singers in rock it’s Meat and Ronnie! R.I.P. to both of them. They are sorely missed.

I used to listen to a *lot* of metal growing up. Bat Out of Hell 1 & 2 were amongst my favorite CDs, and I was completely unapologetic about listening to Meat Loaf. These albums are masterpieces. And to this day, despite (and because) of their theatrical/opera aspect they really encompass the essence of rock music: intensity, electric guitar (I don't remember if it was a telecaster or a stratocaster 😉), controversial lyrics and the energy.

Most people attribute the term "Rock opera" to The Who's Tommy but this right here is a true Rock Opera. The voices, the story, the lights, makeup, special effects all of it makes this whole video near perfect. And while no one thing was perfect on its own, the combination of it all makes this a true musical accomplishment and probably the thing Meat Loaf should have been most proud of.

Jim Steinman and Meatloaf met through making musicals, so understood each other very well and were a perfect combination for this kind of music. Though they never toured, Jim Steinman's project Pandora's Box is well worth looking into, featuring regular Steinman female backing singers Ellen Foley and Holly Sherwood (among others).

When I was young got my first record player for Christmas and the first album as well which was the Bat Out of Hell album. I wore that record out. Bought the cassette when walkmans came out wore the cassette out and finally bought the cd when they came out. Still love it to this day.

I remember when this song first was released. Listened to it over and over again. I have always been a HUGE fan of Meatloaf's operatic rock singing. Not always on pitch but who cares. We lost a great entertainer when we lost Meatloaf. 💔 Luckily we still have his music. This song gives me goosebumps and I find myself listening to it over and over again like I did many years ago. I've never drummed, but the song Low Rider I heard a local band play. They took the drums in that song, and totally owned the stage on the performance. I am surprised more don't do it. The song is OK, better than OK, but this local band's drummer took it and raised it to the nth level. Was astounding. I requested them do it once, and the drummer looked at me and said you want to wear me out huh?

The drums aren't crazy special in Low Rider in the original song. But that drummer saw something obviously and made that song his own. Listening to the original, I see now how a drummer can take over and this guy did. That was back in the '90s. I have searched youtube for other examples of a drummer slaying this song and it's just not there. Only in my memory I guess now.

Meatloaf and Jim Steinman…music magic. This is such a brilliant song and video…and I love it. Along with “Paradise By The Dashboard Light” and “Two Outa Three Ain’t Bad”…I never tired of hearing them. Celine Dion’s video for Jim Steinman’s “It’s All Coming Back To Me Now” is brilliant as well and I think many of the same production people were involved. Can we ever say enough about how brilliant and unique Jim Steinman’s works were?
