Hook Johnny to the Planter. Dad's Wisdom! Planter Setup

The new one row planter needs a bit of setup before Tractor Time with Tim can plant sweet corn. The whole Marks crew is at our place to help adjust and get the planter just right. They make it quick hitch compatible, adjust the row spacing, lubricated the chains, check the seed box and tube and more. We're hoping the rain stops soon so we can plow up our front yard for a big area of sweet corn.

Holy cow the old DickeyJohn monitor. Been a looong time since I seen one of those. That 7000 series planter was good stuff. I remember we had an 8-row JD 71 Flex-planter as well, it was a much slower process than the plate-less 7000.

That is a perfect sized tool for small farm gardens, test plots, etc. I love the looks on their faces when they got to play with something familiar. that 7000 row unit was one of the first to have plateless technology. earlier plate corn planters had replaceable plates for each size kernel of seed corn. yes the kernels were bagged alike, when you changed kernel size you had to change to the correct size plate. this planter has fingers that bypassed the need for graded seed, read that as cheaper seed. also this planter had an elevator to lower each seed so they didn't bounce around and get two or more seeds where you want one (singularity as randy says). also you can place a herbicide and insecticide hopper behind the seed hopper if you so choose. also a chain that drags behind the closing wheels to help cover the seed trench. this row unit is the small block chevy of corn planters. 50 years old and you can still get accessories for it and new ideas are still being made for it. great video, loads of info for the tiny farmer. my dad had a 495A and then a 7000 when they first came out. the technology leap was gigantic at the time. we added the row monitor when it came out. man we were miles ahead of the neighbors back then. lol
@TractorTimewithTim
@TractorTimewithTim 5 лет назад
494A, right? There was one series in between, with plateless technology. The 4 row was a 1240. The 8 row which dad had was a 1280. The 7000 had a better plateless system, but the max emerge disks and press wheels were miles ahead of the 12x0 series. Like you say, this is/was the most popular unit available.

Nice to have family around. Nicer to know what they're talking about. You need two types of corn. One sweet, one popcorn. So, now it's question time. I think in unusual ways. Since that planter is one row only, can you plant in a circular pattern? That way, when those satellites from way up there shoot pictures of your property, people could go, what!!!!!?????. I look forward to your videos, your number 1 here, actually tied. Mr. Ritter is up there too. Wish he'd put out more. But, oh well. Nice video. May GOD bless you and your family.

Tim, I'm really excited you did these last 2 videos. I have thought about getting one of these planters for awhile now, but wasn't sure because I know of several different places that builds these, but the others seemed like they were just doing it in their garage. I wasnt aware of J.O.Harris. I am definitely going to give them a call about a two row sweet corn planter to replace my old 2 row JD 246 plate planter that was wore out and I just sold it for parts. Thanks again, looking forward to seeing how it works for you. As I recall down in your area you're usually planting about 3 or 4 weeks ahead of us in western Pa, if its dry enough. It was good to see the rest of the family there to give you a hand in setting that beast up.

Just don't ever back up with it down or set it down in mud while stopped. Those are the 2 pointers I can say bout it. We have used a 6 row 7000 JD planter & just a couple years ago a 12 row 7000 JD took it's place. Our row units & chain drives are identical so if you ever have any maintenance issue I could probably help too. Great planter & very "user friendly".

@TractorTimewithTim
@TractorTimewithTim 5 лет назад
The beam is the same size as the original when they made them 30 ft wide. It is easier to use the same sized beam so that the U-bolts, etc fit. One other point. You need down pressure to make the planter go into the ground. Since the 3 point does not apply down pressure, we depend on gravity for that. So we need weight.
