Jaime Martinez exactly. That's the most important thing I took from the movie. These two were blessed enough to get scholarships to big schools. That's a blessing within itself. Lots of kids aren't fortunate enough to get scholarships let alone further their education

I'd say it's a bittersweet ending we never saw coming. Even though they didn't make it to the NBA, they got out of their neighborhoods but not everyone they loved made it with them. Arthur lost his Dad and William lost his brother Curtis, and several friends along the way.

This was one of the most interesting and favorite documentaries I've ever seen I graduated in 1991 was planning on playing mens soccer in NTX then go walk-on at a local DFW Jr college like my high school buddy's did but torn meniscus injury 4 months out of high school altered everything especially no insurance just did what I saw my adoptive parents do when shit dosent go their way "Adapt and Push On" so when I saw this documentary years after it came out I felt I could relate seeing that they are doing well now and have families and just as positive and driven to get back up after being knocked down makes me feel better about myself

I interviewed a number of KTQ filmmakers at the Gala. Quite a few sited Hoop Dreams as being a factor for getting them involved in documentary film or as a general motivator in their lives. It's such a wonderful story. Over eight years in the making if you include the time that Will and Arthur first started filming. Due to the fact that it started as only a small short documentary and blossomed into a heart felt everybody story. Not only being one of the most popular sports documentaries but also one of the most popular documentaries ever recorded. Funny that it started out only making $18,000 dollars back in the day. Though it did put the studios into a bidding frenzy when it premiered at Sundance. Will and Arthur are truly larger then life, in real life and really nice guys. Thank you for your comment. :-)

The impact Hoop Dreams had cannot be overstated, I was a skinny kid in Zimbabwe with dreams of getting a college scholarship to the US when I stumbled upon this on VHS and it completely changed my life. Never made it to the US but we actually had scouts come to see us which was almost unheard of back then for African kids who weren't 7 footers. The story still resonates with so many kids from deprived backgrounds regardless of ethnic and cultural background

They look great. I'm amazed how talkative and outgoing these men are. As teens they were pretty quiet and not forthcoming with a lot of dialogue. They answered questions when asked, but nothing like what you see here. They really came out of their shell, Gates becoming a Pastor, and Agee majoring in media. They embrace the camera and public like never before. It's amazing to see that transformation. Both handsome guys who seem satisfied with their accomplishments despite not making it to the NBA. Great upload.

I love sports..and it brought me to tears when these guys stayed in school and did their best. It was every young man's dream to play pro sports...mine included. But it's just a game...these 2 men made it an example that life and family are more important...its what you do for yourself..for your family that is the top trophy anyone can be awarded.

This never gets old, its so dope to see them all these years later reflecting on how important HD was. I loved it as a kid and always will. William Gates and Arthur Agee are Chicago basketball legends without question just by virtue of this film and what they had to deal with as young black males coming up on the southside. So what they didnt make it to the league. Like they both said it's way bigger than basketball. They didnt end up as a statistic. They're still here, still close and telling their inspiring story which makes them Kings. Def a happy ending. Long live King Will & King Arthur. Hoop Dreams Forever.

I loved the Agee mom. God bless all. She showed so much care with the son Arthur. That care touched with the coaches and the coaches knew that a whipping boy wasn't happening due too the parents eye on the son,Arthur. The" home" with down home cooking shows where the heart was. Blessings. I didn't see that with the other ball player, "William" . He became a "whipping boy" by the coach - that was trying to get an another Isaiah Thomas. The coach was trying to hold back with the attitude that was really trying to get out. So the strong attitude in the basketball teaching with William became a "Whipping session" . When they observed the constant "knee operations" being performed- someone wasn't watching "Williams " future career making. I wouldn't have let physicians feel a new home was pictured. Parents eyes have to be glued on their child's future and cutting on his knee- he wasn't going to jump high, that's expected in "Basketball". God bless all. My opinion. Praises. 0:17

The goal was always to get paid playing basketball and Arthur Agee accomplished that. By Arthur's Senior year He became a good high school basketball guard who had good ball handling skills, he was a good shooter, he was a good defender, he could pass the ball well, he was playing above the rim (dunking by the end of his sophomore year) and was extremely fast and quick. Arthur and Derrick Zinnerman made a great back court which caused trouble for a lot of teams including Chicago Westinghouse, Chicago King (26-2) and Batavia (27-2) which were big wins for Marshall that year. Can't forget Cesare Christian and Quadell Kimball great play in the front court. The Batavia game was great for Arthur. Especially in the second half. Arthur (15 pts) outplayed all American guard Lamar Justice (8 pts) in that game. Cesare and Derrick Z played great as well. Cesare was a good inside player that could shoot from the outside. Anyway that 1991 Marshall team was good there speed caused trouble for the other teams. Anyway Arthur ended up playing professional basketball. In college he started four years 2 at Mineral Area and 2 at Arkansas State which is a great accomplishment, Derrick Zinnerman played college ball at Kennedy King and I believe Cesare played college ball too. Not sure about Quadell Kimble.

I rewatched this yesterday, and it touched me just as much as the first time I saw it years ago. I was so curious to see how they are doing. So great to see them still great friends. Arthur's mother was such a beautiful soul.

I remember watching this in the mid 90s. Love basketball and the bound of two different players. Great movie for the kids.

It works because of the connections. The film-makers connected with 2 charismatic kids and their families. The kids connected with each other. I'm happy they're still friends.

I remember as a kid at 10 or 11 years old watching this several times. Every so often would rent it on 📼 VHS. I took a couple moves from this movie. They don't make movies (documentaries) like this no more. Im now 38 and still like to watch this documentary.
