Every time I watch this scene, I shed a tear or two. Reminds me when I was a young kid playing t-ball and my dad was the coach. He always told me to stop trying to hit a home run and just put the ball into play. Sometimes I would, other times I didn't. One time when I didn't listen, I fouled out during a crucial inning. When the inning was over, I picked up my glove and started to head out to the outfield. When my dad saw what I was doing he basically did what Hackman did in this scene. He benched me and we played with two in the outfield. I was crushed and hurt, but later, learned my lesson.

There's two people in the gym besides him that understand what he's doing, Shooter and Myra. The look on Shooter's (Dennis Hopper's) face is brilliant and say's everything. He get's it.
@grovergarver3104
@grovergarver3104 7 лет назад
Myra doesn't quite get it yet. She's close but she doesn't know enough about Basketball to fully get it. But she's starting to get that this guy isn't just a typical basketball coach and maybe he's something special. Shooter, of course, fully gets it and that smile and knowing look on his face in a gym full of people that don't get it, really makes the scene.

John Boutet Except neither get it because passing the ball a certain amount of times doesn’t equal higher scoring efficiency. Simply finding and taking the most efficient shot is what is desirable on an offensive possession. It doesn’t matter if it’s no passes or 6.
@ajs5435
@ajs5435 5 лет назад
She fully knows
@blacksabfan
@blacksabfan 5 лет назад
@@tygeezy That's not the point. The point is that the coach gave specific instructions on how the offense was supposed to run. Rade was openly insubordinate and that's why he was not only taken out of the game, but wasn't allowed to go back in to complete a full squad on the floor. The coach understands completely about "efficiency" and "scoring", but this is the first game of the year, and he expects the team to run a certain system , which will open up scoring opportunities for all players, where you're no longer counting passes before shooting, but willingly moving the ball around to find the best shot. Not just firing it up from 25 feet everytime. Rade made a couple baskets in the scene above, but that was only done in the movie to make Coach's decision seem even crazier to nearly everyone in the gym, except Shooter. Besides, Rade's shots didn't flip the score. At the start of the scene they are down 10, when he leaves the game, they are still down 9. That was also done on purpose to make the audience understand that a one-man offense, while effective for a short time, is not a long term way to win basketball games.
@bauerj3398
@bauerj3398 3 года назад
Rade had game. He was a starter on a Indiana State Championship team, and he was playing college basketball when this film was shot. The players actually had to be somewhat 'detrained' for the movie, teaching them to present their game in a more of a 1950's fashion (ex. the little one-footed running jump shot).

A lot more people in the crowd should have known what they don't know. All the fans are spectators, though many should understand the game because they live in Indiana. Coach was trying to implement a system where the team functions as one unit where they pass the ball around and control the clock( pre shot clock era) limiting opponents possessions and scoring opportunities as well as dictating the flow and pace of the game . One player just hurrying shots even if he’s hitting them throws a wrench in the whole strategy and while it may look good to the fans he’s setting the team up to be worn down and gassed by a team with bigger faster players and more depth .

Probably had as much to do with the other coach than it did with Hackman.

When I first saw this movie the HS kids looked normal, meanwhile all the coaches, teachers, and parents looked old. They must have down a CGI remake! I can't believe how they have made all the adults look like a normal age to me and the kids look so damn young!

A movie that tries to make a game seem important. It's a game.

The important part has nothing to do with the actual game.

My little league coach replaced me in the batters box, when I would not execute the “ fake bunt and swing” that he called. I did not execute it, because as soon as my little league coach gave me the sign, the opposing catcher said “ it’s the fake bunt and swing”. I figured it was pointless to execute it, if the opposing team knew it was coming. Just like Coach Dale, he wanted to get the message across that if you don’t listen to the coach, you get pulled. I tried to explain to him that the other team knew his signs, but to no avail!

Ref blows his whistle and says “Foul, number 12, hand up son.” Meaning, raise your hand so the scorekeeper can see who to record the foul on. When is the last time anyone has saw a player admit his guilt on a foul whether it was a good call or not? This sort of sportsmanship has been lost. Now it’s bitching and whining every time a call is made. Refereeing has gotten pretty bad too though. The game has changed and not for the better if you ask me.

In 1950s America that prob would not have flown. Stunts of any type even for a good cause which I agree with the benching. would prob not had been allowed in the early 50s.
