In that last play call by Shooter, you can see his self-confidence grow with each second, to where he's almost smiling and his eyes light up when he tells them, "don't get caught watching the paint dry!". Great job by Dennis in projecting this guy's growing self-redemption.

Rollin Butcher is the unsung hero of this movie. He supported Shooter sitting with him on the bench in this scene. He brought Whit back to apologize and rejoin the team, which probably influenced Buddy to come back too (even though this wasn't shown in the movie). He also had Dale's back when Dale wanted to close the practices to the townspeople.
@eddiefeeney9759
@eddiefeeney9759 7 месяцев назад
True. They never show Buddy’s return but there are 2 moments in the film where Norman tells Shooter when he’s drunk at Normans house. We’re all coming together. ( reference to buddy ? ) And this is the clincher. Buddy says. Let’s win it coach. Who got us here. Buddy rejoined team after other kids Dad brought him to practice.

@@sedawk while he was excellent in this film, Hopper should have been nominated for Blue Velvet instead. He gave more of an Oscar worthy performance in Blue Velvet, though due to the character and the time the film came out, they probably didn’t think he could have won for Blue Velvet and since Hoosiers was the same year as Blue Velvet, they put him up for this film instead.

I’ve heard other people’s explanations about what the phrase “don’t get caught watching the paint dry”. I always thought he meant when they go to set set up the picket fence they are standing in the paint and for them not to get caught with a 3 second violation. As they run the picket fence you can see two players standing in the paint.
@PikeBishop65
@PikeBishop65 Год назад
He's saying don't get to the paint, i.e. the"three second zone" too early. The timing had to be exactly right. If the play took too long to develop, they would have a team foul called for a three second violation.

My head coach recently did that to me, when *I* was the Assistant. It was for Hockey and not basketball, but still. He got thrown out on purpose, to make me coach the team in the last 4 minutes of the game, where we trailed 3-2. Now I told him, it had been years since I coached, and I felt more comfortable with him coaching, and me being the backup - and to never put me in that position again: Well, he did. Long story short, I got the guys to do a dump and chase, have the forechecker on the defenseman, and told our center to be ready for the slot pass. (the slot is the spot in between the circles, in front of the goal, 10-15 feet out.) Sure enough, it worked, and we scored not once to tie it, but TWICE to win and the place was going insane! So I know how Shooter feels - and we both were able to bring it home, when we were not supposed to win. 🏒🏀🥳
