Hoover Power Scrub Deluxe Carpet Cleaner
Model: FH50150
Seized scrub brushes stopped spinning due to rusted motor shaft.
This is a very common issue with air type motors, as the air & moisture mix to cause the shaft to rust. Models with a sealed separate electric motor tend not to have this issue as frequently. A replacement air type motor for this model is generally $25.
This model is often sold at stores like Kohls, Walmart, Target, etc.
When opened, at step 13, it is highly recommended to spray or grease the shaft with a lubricant. Lithium grease seems to work best and provide fairly long term protection from rusting again. If you use your carpet cleaner frequently (once a week), you may need to open and spray or add new grease about once every 8-10 months.

I have to try this today. I will make an effort to add the outcome here, but the video was very straightforward and well-done. I might suggest lightening it a touch as some parts were very dark, but that could be my machine. Thank you for this. The Hoover is an excellent floor machine and this is my first time with brushes freezing. I bought it new a bit over two years ago.

I followed your directions religiously and greased up the unit...the ball bearings was so rusty its a crime!...but thanks to you my brushes are moving again and I didn't have to call Hoover. lots of my my plastic was crumbling off too. what a cheap unit. My bearing and shaft is one piece but I figured it out. I used liquid wrench, freed it up. I also used castor oil.

LITHIUM grease is THE answer. It's been ~4 years since I first used the Lithium grease. I'm back because I forgot the take apart method and my brushes were stuck again. Once every 4 years I can live with. Taking it apart every time was crazy but that was what I was doing even with using WD.

Great video! I'd like to add a couple of tidbits. Once you get to the bearing inside of of the "motor gear cove" check to see if the bearing itself is rusted. The bearing fits into a cup on the inside of the white motor gear cover. The part of the bearing that sits on the shaft needs to spin freely. If the bearing is frozen due to rust, freeing up the shaft will not solve the problem. Also, be very careful while removing and working with the motor. Pay attention to the white plastic "arm" that is attached (the piece that holds the spring. It's easy to knock against it and break one or both of the small black plastic guides that hold the arm in place.

Thank you, this was a really helpful video, but this bearing may be why this repair didn’t work for me. I was so happy to find this video, went through all the steps, everything turning freely, but when I put it all back together, it didn’t spin. I went back in twice, even sprayed white lithium grease around the spindle. Didn’t think of the bearing. I may go back in again now. You also need to make sure that the quick clean/deep clean dial is oriented correctly or it won’t turn once it’s back together.

Great tutorial. I have a FH50205 power scrub elite . After maybe an hours use the brushes stopped working. Fortunately for me one of the clear plastic tubes that go from the base up through the upper section acquired a kink. When the unit is locked in the upright position, the tubes get pinched to stop the brushes while idle and that's a good thing. I tweaked the tube and it seems ok now. These brushes are powered by air so check the tubes before really digging into this project and maybe save you some frustration.

Thank you for this it was so helpful to me. I did manage to get my brushes spinning again. But oh I worry for how long! the little bearing thing was so rusted to the motor shaft it looked like thick weld of rust underneath and I couldn't get it or the transition wheel off but with some libricant and pliers I was able to get everything in the motor box moving again. And I needed to use my biggest allen wrench to loosen up the slot for the brush track which wasn't moving either but again lubricant and cranks back and forth loosened it right up. Truly, thank you for the video. So helpful. Did not want to try to replace this thing especially since I'd used it only once before. But I will be taking everything apart and drying it down when I am done this time. I don't need anymore problems! Thank you!

Alternatively, if you have a 3/8 hex key, it fits perfectly into the keyhole where the shaft on the spin heads connects to the assembly. Place the hex key into this hole and gently spin it until it moves. This fixed the problem on my unit and took about 30 seconds. Obviously, if light pressure is not enough to free the device, proceed to the repair shown in the video to prevent breaking the plastic gear drives.

SUPER - and something else. Hey, hours with other videos, etc. You got me there. It was rust and grit at the final gear. But, the turning did free it up, but still not smooth. The plastic bottom where the shaft is (mine is Hoover Spin Scrub50 model FH50027) had 5 or 6 little clips and it opened up. The shaft then comes out. Lots of grit and grime in there. So, got all it out and sprayed lithium grease. On the way now to buy screws and trashing these cheap rusted ones. THANKS, again!!!!

@Doramius
@Doramius 3 года назад
The plastic does become brittle over time, particularly around the rust areas and the underside of the cleaner. not sure why this happens, but some consistent patterns have been from people who leave the cleaner in colder basements & closets. It's possible that the housing material was not tested to be stored in certain climates, or maybe it could be related to the quality of water used, as some homes have harder water, which DOES affect the plastic. Plastics and physics are not my area of expertise, unfortunately.

After watching the repair I decided to try something else. It looked like there was not to much effort to release the brush's so I went to my too box and found a hex wrench that would fit the hex input for the brush's. After removing the brush's just insert the hex wrench into the slot and turn it a little until it breaks free. My was locked up but a small turn and it was free. This may not be the case for all of these repairs but it worked for me. If it will not turn follow the video.

@Doramius
@Doramius 3 года назад
As stated in a previous post, using a Hex hey "may" work, but be very careful. the gears are plastic, as shown in the video. Forcing them if the bearing is to rusted or seized WILL cause damage to the gear teeth resulting in more costly repairs. Using a hex key or Allen wrench is NOT a recommended method.

By the way, I sprayed WD-40 on the drive shaft and used metal lubrication to prevent rust, corrosion. I say, If you are already in the "body cavity performing surgery" do some preventative maintenance too. I don't think rust will like what I did when in the midst of surgery yo!
@nonenone4078

How often did you spray and would it better if i put a fan on the bottom of the vacuum after using so it can dry the bottom of the vacuum
@Doramius
@Doramius 5 лет назад
@@nonenone4078 Putting a fan on the bottom of the unit has no effect. The air driven motor is mainly enclosed and a fan would not provide enough air. Also, moving air would just contribute to the corrosion. The metal parts must be coated in a lubricant to protect them from moisture AND air. If using Lithium grease, you might only have to apply it once. Regular WD40 I'd be applying once every 6 months to a year, depending on how frequently the machine was used. However, the first time I applied Lithium grease is the ONLY time I've had to apply it. I gave the shaft a good bath in the grease before closing the cover, and I've checked twice in 2 years, and the unit STILL has not required re-application.

I had an interesting problem with a Power Scrub / Spin Brush model... the handle would not pull hard enough to open the spray valve so no water came out. It is under the curved panel on the back side on the Power Scrub (where your knees would hit when your pushing it with the handle up) and found the valve. There was too much flex in the actuating rod from the water spray trigger/handle to push open the valve. I glued a small (1/2" square) piece of plastic I cut from an old storage container handle (about1/8" thick) to the actuating rod where it contacted the valve to make it just a tad longer and push harder so now works great !! Cost nothing!... Hope that helps someone.

It's possible that the bearing may be nearing end of usability. Sometimes adding a little grease or lubricant can help extend the life. Again, the reason for the seizing is due to rust.

Well normal grease wont last long. I suggest people add Fluid Film. It leaves a wet film. That protects against moisture. They use it for rusting proofing cars during the winter against salt. It would probably solve this issue quite easily. Although they shouldve just used stainless steal.

Thanks for helping me with this! I had the exact same issue as what was described in this video. My machine is now scrubbing like a charm. Too bad they didn't use stainless steel for the screws and the drive shaft... there is/was lots of rust on the inside of my machine. Does anyone know how the build quality differs vs Eureka and/or Bissell?
@Doramius
@Doramius 7 лет назад
It's not so much the build quality, but how they are designed. More specifically, the brushes. Hoover has round vertical scrub brushes that move as a horizontal clockwork gear. Bissell usually has 2 horizontal brush rods (similar to what you might find on a vacuum) that are belt driven (I think only a few models are gear driven). Eureka also has a horizontal rod brush that is belt driven, but usually is only a single brush, unlike most of Bissell's that have 2. Gear driven brushes are usually preferred as they tend to have more power. Some of the belts for Bissell even have teeth, since some models the belt would slip if liquid made it on the belt. Some people like Bissell and Eureka because of the horizontal brush making level and even scrubbing. The horizontal brushes have been known to pull up on thicker carpet, and are much tougher to pull hair and string off, as it winds around the brush. People like Hoover because it's easy to clean out the brush, seems to focus or spot clean easier with the brushes. However, the better models tend to be quite pricey, otherwise you have air driven motors, like the one in the video, to reduce the cost. Going a little higher in cost are the Rug Doctor cleaners which use straight brushes that oscillate side to side, or forward and back, to do the scrubbing (There are a few models that do have the horizontal rod.) These straight brushes scrub similarly to the Hoover, but are level like a horizontal rod. Rug Doctors seem to do really well with lightly soiled trip resistant or tiled carpet that isn't very thick or shaggy, or may not require padding (similar to carpet in most workplaces and offices). In many cases like this, it's not even a contest that Rug Doctor would win. However, most home carpets I see have thick padding, might be shaggier, and the Rug Doctor does NOT do well with these. Semi shaggy carpet, you'll want to use the Hoover or Bissell. The shaggier the carpet, and the Hoover does the better cleaning.

@Doramius
@Doramius 7 лет назад
Leaks can be tough to find. I've tried the "tire leak" method a few times and have found it to work. However, make sure you clear the lines with clean water for a few minutes one you find your leak. The tire method is where blend 1tbsp of dish soap with 2cups water. Then run the solution through the line. The leak should bubble out. Most of the time the holes are found either at the connecting points or at bending points. In some cases, I just replaced the hoses altogether. Sad truth.

Doramius My issue is with the scrubber attachment tool. It won't spin at all. It feels like it's locked. No movement at all. I took apart part to see motor. It looks similar to the larger one in your video, just smaller of course. It has lubricant all over it (from manufacturer), and it is not rusted at all. I tried to turn with vice clip. Nothing. It won't budge. Seems locked. Any advice? I can't find sales receipt, so Hoover will not replace. Also I live on Maui and there are no Hoover mfg stores to purchase a replacement part. Help :)
@Doramius
@Doramius 6 лет назад
I hope I read what you're saying correctly. The scrubber brush snaps directly to the motor driven gears once assembled. If you removed the scrubber brushes and they don't turn freely, then the brushes have another issue that needs to be looked at or replaced altogether (See 1:08 ). If they move freely and you get to the motor and you see the grease, but it is still seized and unable to break loose, the motor itself may need to be replaced. Overall, the cleaner is good, but the build of the air driven motor is the most disappointing piece of the whole design.

Check to make sure none of the parts are damaged. I had someone who followed the instructions, but the hex drive on the brush assembly was rounded on the edges. Their issue was not so much a rusted motor, but something caught in the gears. Each step allows you to also view and identify if any part of the brush motor assembly is having an issue.

@Doramius
@Doramius 4 года назад
Hopefully it's just a loose hose or possibly a small hole in a hose. this can be a tricky repair, and if possible, take to a professional to look at. The hose is often easy to seal with a silicon glue at the connection points, or replace if it's the hose itself. You may also want to check rubber seals around the reservoir. However, if you have cracked housing in the main unit, you might need to get a new vac.

As you see in the instructional steps, there are plastic gears that connect to the seized shaft. It is NOT recommended to use a hex wrench to force it free, as it can strip the teeth and cause more costly damage.

Great video. Def use wd40 when at the motor shaft but otherwise really great video.

Easy video to follow, I went through all the steps and freed up the motor shaft. Put the cleaner back together and the brushes still didn't work when I turned the power on. I took it back apart looking to see if any parts were broken, I couldn't see any. Any ideas?
@Doramius
@Doramius 6 лет назад
Once all put back together, make sure the brushes can be manually turned. You should be able to feel a little drag letting you know that they are in contact with the motor. if there is no drag, you may need to make sure your gears are lined up. Also make sure the teeth on the gears are not worn or damaged.

The brushes should be cleaned to remove soil; use a wire brush to get down to the base to remove hair.
@Doramius
@Doramius 5 лет назад
It's a good suggestion. I use a plastic wide bristled comb, as wire brushes tend to shred or pull out the nylon brush fibers.

Domorius thanks you so much for your tutorial video! I did this and it worked like a charm however today the problem recurred and I couldn't fix it. The brushes rotate when I lift the scrubber but as soon as I apply a little pressure with my hand on the brushes they stop rotating. There is no power in the rotation and is easily stopped. The turbine seems fine though and the gears move just fine. Please advise if you know what to do. Regards

Sounds like a gear(s) might have worn teeth. It could be the gears in the brush assembly itself, or in the motor unit. I have seen where the teeth on the transition gear have been worn away over time, especially if the unit is used frequently in very shaggy carpet. If you have to replace either of the plastic gears in the motor assembly, ALWAYS REPLACE BOTH!! If it's the brush assembly, you'll have to order the full brush assembly.

Thank you for this video, just got my new Hoover, should I open up to grease everything before first use ? Is it possible to tell me how and where apply grease ?
@Doramius

Overall, be aware of possibly voiding any warranties by opening the unit. However, I haven't seen or heard of any such issues. Take it as a word of caution. Adding Lithium Grease should be to the shaft and gears. Step 13.

I did this. Still doesn’t work. It seems the white cover is touching the bearing not allowing the bearing to spin freely. Not sure why it touches, but when I take the white cover off, the bearing spins.
@joehumeas7196
@joehumeas7196 3 года назад
Also, I couldn’t get the bearing off. Got it to spin though with some wd40. Not sure how much force it should take to spin. Mine definitely takes some umph to get it to spin but at least it’s not seized anymore.

Used to be a time you could depend on a brand-name like Hoover. Everybody should link this to Hoover... They should be ashamed of themselves for making such a shoddy product. How much more could it have possibly cost them to use stainless steel parts so this thing would last more than a couple of uses? Greedy bastards.

Well, got all the way to step 22- reinstalled the brushes and they still won’t move freely. 😭😖
@Doramius
@Doramius 5 лет назад
If you made it to Step 22 and everything else was turning and moving smoothly, the problem may be the brush assembly, itself. You'll need to make sure there aren't carpet fibers in the gears, and that the gears do not have damaged teeth. As long as the motor assembly moves freely, the main unit is fine. If the Brush assembly is damaged, you may need to replace the brush assembly.

The brainiacs at Hoover should take note of how many views this video has received. Maybe - just maybe - they could fix the problem with the rust in the gearbox!

Do you know how to fix it if it had a loud noise with a burning smell? I used your video to take it apart but I didn’t know what to do after that.
@Doramius
@Doramius 4 года назад
If there's ever a burning smell or smoke present, you should take it in for service. There could be a leak, or something happening with the motor.

Once I get the shaft turning again I was going to use WD-40 or Wurth HHS-K on it to, hopefuly, prevent or delay it from happening again. Good idea or bad? Which would be better, WD-40 or Wurth HHS-K?
@Doramius
@Doramius 6 лет назад
Again, I prefer Lithium grease as it seems to prevent moisture corrosion a little better. I know WD-40 also makes a lithium grease. Regular WD-40 will work, but tends to need to be reapplied after extended use of the Hoover. I've used Wurth on car parts, but haven't ever used it in the Hoover. I don't know if it'll affect the plastics, though, so be cautious. Wurth is usually for metal on metal lubrication with heat and/or pressure.

i have a hoover power scrub cleaner but the cleaning solution won't come out of tank when you squeeze the lever...any suggestions
@Doramius
@Doramius 6 лет назад
Make sure the tank is firmly in place, and that none of the hoses are pinched. I have had where someone left undiluted cleaner in the solution side and it dried out in the tube creating a thick barrier that wouldn't let liquid through. I was able to squeeze the blockage and get it to move through the tube, but it was too much for the nozzle and had to splice the tube to clear it. Check that there are no kinks in the tube and that there are no blockages.
