This delightful Empire News Bulletin shows workers busily stripping vines in the Kentish hop gardens. Many of the pickers are children, who beam cheekily at the camera before settling down for a hearty picnic.

one of my earliest memories is hop picking in kent in about 1973 , mum reckons it was one of the last hop sessions before total mechanisation. I was 3 at the time but i'll never forget the glorious smell.

Hop picking was actually considered a treat for London's inner city inhabitants. Every summer, families from the cramped, dirty, and squalid East End would tramp to London's environs to pick hops and enjoy the sunshine and space. So while it was work, it wasn't exactly "child labor."

That's fascinating - but how on earth did their hands and arms hold out? I have a 'rogue hop' - an ornamental that seeded itself in my garden; sometimes it has hops on it, and after rain it grows like kudzu vine. I have to prune it back or it'd be in the house. This thing doesn't half make your skin itch if you grasp an armful. Or perhaps it's just me who's a weakling lol.

I wonder, does hops smell like beer? Does it grow everywhere?
