Athens vs Sparta. An easy battle from a recent GBoH game. Trying to get some games in between painting. Let me know if you'd like to see this battle through to the end!

That was both enjoyable and interesting to watch. I would certainly like to see more on this system.

I think this walk, trot, run stuff is not historically accurate! You can’t run in such a close formation. These armies would close slowly! They would not start running! These are not barbarian hordes! Safety was in close formation and most were farmers and not full time warriors. These formations would have marched to close and engaged only once they closed within striking distance. Running would have broken their formation and caused them to fight as individuals! This is not how they fought. The shield of the man to their right helped protect them; running would not have allowed their formation to be strong. Big flaw in the game that makes it unplayable IMO! I sold my copy years ago.

I can see the side of your view. However, there is historical presedence such as the battle of Marathon and a few others noted by historians of the time with all out charges. Whether or not it should be limited to such scenarios I think should be more of a question. The effects of running indeed do have a great chance to effect unit cohesion, which in this game reflects the ability to maintain the formation. I have not played more than 3 scenarios so I will save my full opinion for after. Thanks very much for your input and for watching!

Cry Havoc “historically accurate” is a complete guess for ancient warfare. But you are correct in one sense, that running units are subject to disarray. However, this is covered in the rules. Running hoplites are subject to a TQ check after moving. In addition, this movement is only valid before first contact with the enemy, so it doesn’t actually have much impact on the game beyond one or two activations. A pity that many of you seemed to have missed this and reactively sold a cool game.

@@epicfoxtabletop2165 herodotus says the run into battle at Marathon was the first time any army from Hellas did that. It makes total sense too because of the Persian archers raining arrows on the hoplites, closing that distance at a run was the best option. Greeks never would have had to do that before since Greeks usually just relied on hoplites to win the day, so a Greek vs Greek hop lite battle would no way be conducted in a sprint. Thucydides starts to mention during the Peloponnesian war that hoplites start running tho
