A bit of solvent on the front of the snake ahead of the bristles, a couple of passes to get the big stuff then let it soak for a couple minutes, then apply some gun oil near the back of the snake just ahead of the large drying portion to leave a thin film of oil inside the barrel, a final pass, and you're good to go. Works for me, it's a good field cleaning until I can get home and take it apart.
Just purchased your product for my .308. I'm floored at how effective and simple to use the Boresnake is. My favorite firearm related purchase of the year. I'll be getting another for my 12 gauge on Monday.
I own 4 Boresnakes after discovering them in 2012. When properly used , the dirt and powder grime does not contaminate the receiver. I use Klean bore patches , cotton patches , Hoppes solvent , and Rem Oil spray. I love to clean my cowboy revolvers and oil the stripped no finish grips !!!!
Just wanted to let you know that i picked up your boresnake for my browning xbolt rifle and had fantastic results! looked at the before and after and man ive never seen the bore shine so well. gonna go back to the store and pick up one for my 12g, .22 rimfire and my coyote .22-250! great product guys and thank you for your great video on how to use it properly.
After shooting my Mosin-Nagant, I hate cleaning the corrosive ammo afterwards. I saw this and thought "What the Hell?" so I bought it. After one swipe the Mosin's bore is shiny like new. In my opinion, I wouldn't buy another one of these products, though. I would buy 5 or 6 :)
who the fuck sees a gun cleaning video and thinks "What the hell?". And I thought Hoppe's shouldn't have to post fake comments themselves or by proxy, but whatever. It is a good cleaner though, but you wouldn't need 5 or 6 unless you ordered about 3 mosin crates.
been using mine for years and still holds up though i upgraded to the viper recently and it works even better.like anything in life if you take care of it it'll last that much longer
Just used a new snake on my xt-22. Love it, gonna get a back up, and one for the 12ga. Awesome product. Get one for the table and one for field. You will not regret it.
I’ve watched several RU-vid videos from different people and only one mentioned to put solvent on the first larger part of the bore snake. This helps soften up carbon and copper. This is not mentioned on the package of the bore snake I just purchased either.
There is a hard "knot" right after the brass brush, I will put some bore solvent on there if it's really dirty. I usually pull it through three times, on the last pull, put oil on the tail. Especially if you are not going to use the gun in a while.
it will work. i have the .22 bore snake for me .223/.556 . the initial pull through is very tight but you have to pull very hard. after the first pass it will pull through the bore no problem.
I'd figure you put the cleaner at the beginning or middle of the snake. The video shows the bit of oil to keep it lubricated/protected goes toward the end of the snake. As far as washing it, I'm not sure about water touching the brass parts, but I would hand-wash it in a small bowl with warm water.
And now I know how to pronounce this damn company's name. I have a gallon of the stuff sitting around my house and I never knew until now. Now all I need to know is how to pronounce Rippetoe.
It seems like the boresnake needs to do its job on a single pass. Is that correct? If you run it through a 2nd-3rd time then you're pulling a dirty snake through your bore. I only shoot about 100 rounds per range trip and so my semi-auto pistol isn't going to get too fouled. Is the boresnake the best bet for me?
Question: The bore snake works quite well, but there's a chemical odor to it, and the package states that it contains a chemical known to cause cancer. What is that chemical and should one wear gloves when using the bore snake?
What about afterwards oiling the inside of bore? I wouldn't think you'd want to use the same dirty snake. Do you you a cleaning rod with patches or have another snake just for oiling?
Leave the chokes in. The threads on the shotgun for your chokes are very fine, and will accumulate fouling very quickly. You will create a whole new cleaning headache by taking your chokes out. IMHO.
So the bronze brush in the BoreSnake is harmless to any barrel? How about the barrel of an older rifle, like a antique Winchester Model 92 rifle? Still okay to use without worry? Thanks!
Just FYI this is not an actual snake. Was very disappointed when finding this out. Thought I was buying a companion that I could take care of. Turns out it's just a stupid rope.
So its fast and effective and works great, but still not good enough to replace running patches through the bore? Or its better than running patches through the bore one at a time?
Just bought an M4 Carbine. It's chrome-lined. Will the brass bristles embedded in the cloth, be too abrasive? First time rifle owner. Learning as I go, like I did with my 1st manual drive transmission. Lol, good times!
I have a near new su 16 and cz512 neither of which will pull through the barrel without tearing the guide string off.Have used product before with no issues, makes no sense what so ever.
At the range, to get out powder residue these are OK. But I suggest that after you've used it for the first time, try running a standard cleaning rod with a clean patch down the bore. You'll likely be amazed at how much residue you get out. The only thing I use these for anymore is to clean out powder residue at the range. I always clean with a rod once I get home, and find that I still run multiple brush strokes, wet patches and clean patches before the bore is actually clean. If you're precision shooting, do not think a bore snake will clean your rifle or pistol sufficiently. And certainly don't use these exclusively; you'll end up with a horribly fouled bore.
Don't use any solvent or anything? Just bought one for midsize pistols, the copper bristles got stuck in the tip of the barrel of a .380, almost couldn't pull it out. Less than an inch in the barrel, wouldn't begin to pull all the way through.
Dave, I recently purchased a Boresnake for my 5.56/.223 and upon using it as directed, could not pull it through the barrel. My supplier sold me one to fit a .22 rifle, so the Boresnake should have done the job on my 5.56, right? However, it wasn't just a little tight - but too tight to pull through. Any ideas as to the problem?
CLR before the brush and a tad bit of oil at the end makes her all shiny BUT then you got the bolt carrier and all the goodies around it to clean too, let’s see that snake clean that !! JK I love my Bore Snake !!
I apply Hoppe's gun bore cleaner on to the end of the bore snake and run it through the bore. Why do I keep seeing videos of people lubricating the bore/barrel after cleaning the barrel/bore with bore cleaner? That makes honestly zero sense as applying lubricant to the barrel of my ar15 will cause an extreme amount of fouling to stick to the barrel due to the lubricant. Someone please explain?
Sorry Sir, I’m not convinced. I rather use brushes with patches a few times especially if the shotgun has been sitting for some time. I believe my old method will even remove surface rust if any. I think you representing the company and product left me asking questions.
Are you supposed to apply solvent to the snake at the end of the leader so the brush can loosen the fouling followed by the floss and finishing pull with oiled end pulled through last?
I bought one for my lever action 22. saves a lot of time not having to tear completely apart every time to clean it. the only have one problem with it. The 22 bore is about the same diameter as the pull string. I really have to stretch the crap out of it to get it to feed. a heavier weight would help
+Allen Stewart Yes, I do. Thank you. The only advise I would give to anyone, is when wrapping, or rolling it up for storage after use. make sure the brass is covered by the snake before wrapping the pull cord around it. are you will get the brass wires embedded in the pull cord, which will embed in your finger
You did not use the Boresnake as instructed by the manufacturer. AND, why would you clean your rifle after 20 rds? For the M16/AR15 platform , at least, cleaning is not necessary for hundreds of rounds. You didn't mention what rifle or shotgun you were cleaning.
I think he forgot the part about putting some cleaner on the snake before running it through the barrel. I'll confess, at first I thought it was bullshit that he only pulled the snake thru the barrel one time, but other "non biased" users also claim it's all it takes. One time through. But, the other users did apply cleaner to the bristle area of the snake first.
I have had good results with pistol gun snakes. BUT!! The 12 gauge Hoppes gun snake WON'T go through. I pulled it as hard as i could, wouldn't go thru. Then, I had a hell of a time trying to back it out. Wasted money and effort. I seriously can't recommend the 12 gauge boresnake.
They didn't pay an actor to do this, he's a "host" for Hoppe's. They also most likely didn't pay for a professional script writer, looks like they also used a cheap hand held video cam. Low budget doesn't equal quality viewing, they made their point on their product, that's all they wanted to achieve. I also own 5 different caliber bore snakes, haven't found a problem with any of them yet.
Uggh! Bore snakes.... I like the concept, but not the reality of them. I prefer to only use CLEAN patches, and be able to choose when I use a brush or not. Sure, someone might say....."well, you can clean a boresnake." Yeah, totally defeats the purpose of ease and convenience if you have to clean your boresnake on top of cleaning your gun!
Paid $16 at Walmart for your boresnake only to have the string break with it completely in the barrel of my 870 literally the 2nd time I ever used it. What a piece of shit
lol. Don't believe the people who refute it, Walmart absolutely 100% sells the same products made with lesser quality. Me and my one cousin both coincidentally bought the exact same orange hunting vests, same brand, same little embroidered logo in the same spot, me from gander mountain/he from walmart, and the back of his ripped open getting snagged on a thorn bush the second time he wore it, I have the same one still with no more than aesthetic damage.
Bought a brand new POF Renegade plus. And a boresnake viper (guess its new version) applied cleaner and oil to the proper parts of snake went to pull thru almost IMMEDIATLY the fuckin thing was stuck I wrapped around my hand multiple times started pulling again SNAP!!!! Now I got your stupid ass bore snake broke in my 2000 gun I'm going on BBB
I just tested a bore snake and was not impressed. I took my clean rifle and fired only 20 rounds. Then to clean it I put a good amount of break free on the first cloth area before the brush as i was instructed by the gun store guys, and ran it through slowly 5 times. Then I ran a cleaning rod through to check it with a clean white patch cloth. It came out dirty. I then gave up on the gimmick I just wasted $15 on, and cleaned it the normal way. I call bullshit, one time through wouldn't ever work
