Been using Hoppes products for almost 50 years. I have, through the years, tried the others that are talked about being so much better. I have yet to find any cleaner or lubricant that beats Hoppes. I have guns that I have owned since I was old enough to shoot, and they still look like new with no rust, and all they get is a light coat of Hoppes Gun Oil. Its been around this long for a reason.

I still need to get a bottle of this stuff. I'm waiting until the bottle that came with my cleaning kit is empty. It sure lasts a long time. Anyway, I don't get how people are so paranoid about the metal from the bore brush and associated parts scraping up the barrel. You have full metal jacket bullets bouncing all around in there at intense speed and pressures. You'd thing a bump or two from the rod at cleaning speeds would be nothing regardless of the type of metal...

TheMango121 Thank you. I agree!!just bought hoppes cleaner two days ago and cleaned my gun. I was done , screwed the top on tight and placed in my car. The container tipped over and I didn't notice it. After about an hour I smelled at the smell. The bottle leak through the lid. This wasn't the first time it happened. Love the stuff. But please do something with the lids perhaps a glass jar with an actual metal top on it may be charged us an additional quarter or $0. 30 more?

Use Hoppes if you like the smell. Otherwise, mineral spirits for cleaning followed by a light coat of mineral oil works just as well. Because you only use a few drops at a time and a bottle will literally last years, you aren't really going to save/spend much money either way.

Do not dip your brush into your bottle of solvent, please. Do not use a Stainless Steel brush in your bore, please. Change out the patch once you push it out the end of the muzzle. Do not drag it back through with all the gunk on it. Oil will dry out a wooden stock over time. But, Hoppe's No. 9 is the bore cleaner I use most. I use Hoppe's No. 9, 10W40 full synthetic Motor Oil and Hi-Temp Wheel Bearing grease. That's it. If it slides, grease it. If it turns, oil it.

My observations exactly. I find it distressing that a company that has such a storied history in the gun care business would make a video showing someone contaminating his entire bottle of solvent by dipping a bore brush in it, then using a stainless steel brush. I think that any gun care company that sells stainless bore brushes deserves to be roundly condemned as firearm vandals.

Two questions: 1) Tornado brush: I'm sure it does a great job of scrubbing the lands, but what good does it do for the grooves? It doesn't look like it would get in there at all; the old fashioned brush would get in there better. 2) Gun oil vs. gun grease : when would you apply one versus the other?
@spasmonaut10
@spasmonaut10 10 лет назад
@eurohim, I've been using this stuff since I first started shooting 13 years ago and love the smell. The reason for the "paranoia" is that it's actually more than just paranoia. For instance, aluminum rods are softer metal than steel and can be etched and pick up contaminants which will drag across the lands of your rifling. Bare steel rods are just an accident waiting to happen to a perfectly good (presumably) bore. It really isn't the velocity with which you're moving the rod and cleaning components in your bore, but the actual energy with which you're moving them. A slow, but inadvertent scratch caused by the end of a steel brush as it's improperly inserted into the bore can start gnawing away at the throat of your barrel, for instance. It won't likely cause the gun to fail, but with time your accuracy will suffer as the erosions caused by poor cleaning techniques continue to create abnormal patterns of wear. Generally-speaking, the only metals your bore encounters are lead, copper, brass, or copper alloys which are all softer than steel. Never wanting to remove material in your barrel, when possible, is always preferable. No one wants to wear out a barrel any faster than they must, and certainly not because of poor cleaning regiments or techniques. Take care of the chamber, throat, and crown to preserve your firearm's accuracy.

make sure you use 2 or 3 times more patch cloth then he does LOL he barely has enough to touch the rifling and he has zero resistance in the barrel. he could have poured the hoppes in and then just let it air dry for the good he did using a tiny patch cloth like that!!!! :-)

Charles walter i love hoppes... it is great. i never use anything else. VERY IMPORTANT INFO LEFT OUT OF THIS VIDEO...this infomercial forgot to mention that you need to re-clean your firearm moments before you shoot it to remove the protective oil in the bore [no matter what brand you use]... if you do not, you risk damage from something called compressive hydraulic action... in other words, fluids do not compress and therefore the bullet will squeeze between the oil and the barrel metal and cause increase in barrel caliber or decrease in projectile diameter... either way you get non-conforming shot to shot accuracy and uneven wear and tear on the firearm rifling...
@jamesdarnell8568
@jamesdarnell8568 4 года назад
Inspector, how much oil are you pouring down your barrels? The first bullet will remove a fine film of oil and begin to lay down some copper alloy in any pits or rough spots. Subsequent rounds will offer more accuracy through the smoother barrel. I wipe down the exterior of my guns every time after I handle them. I clean my rifle bores once a year, after hunting season. (I clean shotgun bores after every weekend spent shooting). None of the game I have taken has ever complained about a lack of accuracy.

I use Ballistol , Hoppe's 9, or Clenzoil is clean my guns or knives. Hoppe's will kill your bluing over the years of storage. Wipe dry after a good Hoppe's cleaning. Then lube your guns up with a film of Lucas Extreme synthetic for the best humidity protection . Lucas smells so good. Use Lucas red synthetic or mineral oil on you hunting rifle.

Only four minutes into the video and there are already two glaring mistakes. 1) You don't dip a bore brush in your solvent bottle unless you really like contaminating the whole bottle. 2) Anyone using a stainless steel bore brush on his barrel will badly scratch the bore.

@jamesdarnell8568
@jamesdarnell8568 4 года назад
You're a good basketball player but it doesn't take a genius to know that solvent is for cleaning and oil is for protection. Solvent will evaporate fairly quickly, leaving bare steel unprotected from humidity.

You shouldn’t begin cleaning a bore with a brush that should be done in the middle of cleaning. The brush can pick up an excess of fouling if used in the beginning and wear the barrel.

I forgot to mention that using any petroleum-based product (Hoppes No. 9) in an air rifle will cause dieseling (the oil detonating under the extreme air pressure from the piston), which can damage the rifle, especially the piston.

I have been using Hoppes #9 for almost 50 years, and get it on my hands all the time. No harm at all to me. It is not toxic, or it would harm the finish of the guns, which it does not. Your safe as far as your hands. I have seen many video's where guys use rubber gloves to clean their guns, but I just think they are too wimpy and don't want to mess their sissy hands...lol There are probably other cleaners which are a little more harsh, but Hoppes #9 is not one of them.

Both "hop-pees" and "hops" are incorrect pronunciations. FA Hoppe and his family pronounced it "Hop-puh". It should be pronounced "Hoppus Number Nine" but people pronounce it the way they want. Calling people "idiots" for pronouncing it incorrectly, while you yourself pronounce it incorrectly, is ironic.

Wow! Just what Ive been looking for. Neglect your guns some. Don't clean them like you should. Let condensation form which you know about. No worries. Good old Hoppes number 9 "solvent" will fix it. That is, if you are using a Hoppes bore brush and rod. And if you are using that size patch on a 308, it will take more than 4 to 8 patches. The patch you used on this video is more suited for a 22. Very disappointing video from a giant in the gun cleaning industry. The funny thing is that I was looking to maybe switch to Hoppes by looking at some videos, but Im gonna stay with MPro7 at least for now.
