The dialogue alone made it far more worth it to spare Regalla. Angela Bassett’s performance throughout the story was so captivating, and we got a much greater perspective on what a complex character Regalla was. I also love how open-ended her fate was. We may not have seen the last of her, and that’s awesome.
Yes, the richness of the voice acting for Regalla makes her an incredible character. I'd let her live to just hear her talk passionately about something.
In HZD, you had to make a similar choice with Olin. But Olin was blackmailed, cowardly, and ultimately repentant and the choice came down to how much you felt Aloy should hate him because his actions led to the death of Rost. In HFW, however, Regalla isn't coerced into setting a civil war - sure Sylens (through a proxy) gave her the means, but she chose to do it herself and always had the intention of doing so. To that end... no mercy.
I think the choice is about the bigger picture. You need all the help you can get and she's predictable enough that she would be true to her word. Or you can decide whether or not you want a bow or a new outfit.
I agree. It also feels hypocritical to spare her, the leader of the rebels and therefore the one responsible for starting everything while still killing every other rebel you find. Why should she get a second chance if we aren't going to allow her followers the same?
@@randyjax09 In the ending (regardless of the choice) we see Hekarro and his marshalls giving someone a respectful funeral. Its pretty strongly implied that its Regalla's. Also given her speech at the base, had she lived she would probably have gone right back to her hopeless rebellion or committed a suicidal solo attack against either the Carja or her former chief. Im pretty sure she is gone, but her rebellion (and maybe the tactics she used) will probably be referenced in future games or DLC.
My only regret is there's no opportunity for Aloy to tell her about Helios. But then again, from the way the war against the Tenakth and Utaru is discussed they had the "good fortune " that the Carja never deployed the Staker of Corpses in the West
@@BHRamsay I doubt that Regalla would have been very impressed about killing Helis. It seems he did not fight in the West so they would have only heard stories rather than experianced his brutality first hand. Also Regalla views the Carja as animals to be slaughtered/destroyed, not people who might be given some measure of respect (she might despise Aloy for defeating her, but she at least respects her prowess). Its probably made worse by the fact that Aloy is also the one who saved Meridian several times.
I killed her for the bow. So when new game plus eventually comes I can have her AND her bow in the end game. Even though nothing changes game wise it just seem more appropriate for the story.
Kotalo quickly became my favorite character. He lost all his friends, all his fellow marshals, as well as his arm. You see how much he struggles with the grief of both his friends and arm through the game. I can’t bring myself to make both him and Hekaro suffer. Kotalo deserved his revenge and how could you take that from him. Just my perspective and love for Kotalo
Simple decision for me. She betrayed Hekkaro, killed innocent people and wants nothing but genocide. I always give people a chance but she already got hers. She's a monster.
Exactly. Same here. Furthermore, she planned to lead the tribe into battle with people with power she couldn’t understand - in that respect, she’s like helis.
I lover her finale, although I felt she was robbed in her final moment. They should have shown her going down swinging instead of cutting away after her quote "finally, the death I was promised."
@@randyjax09 Problem with that is, it then makes a mockery of having been given choice in the first place, especially to those who’ll only play once and decide she must die. The devs would essentially be saying to you that whatever decisions we give you at critical moments are irrelevant - in which case, it’s pointless, and far better the devs progress the story the way they want. Reminds me of Nil in HZD. A very minor character but you eventually have choice of fighting him to the death, or not. So it must be a huge surprise to those who chose the former, remembered him, then found him alive and well without explanation in HFW - if they found him. So Guerrilla have appropriated the conversational dialogue trees of the likes of the Mass Effect trilogy, and a nod to ME2’s plot in HFW, but without any impact that choice in those games brings
I chose to kill Regalla, I love Hekaro and Kotalo and understand how letting her live would be rather insulting to the fact that she's repeatedly attacked them both and taken Kotalo's arm.
Loved her character and passion...and really enjoyed it when Kotalo ran her through with his spear. It was satisfying watching her die in the dirt, not getting what she wanted, after the death and destruction she caused when she was shown mercy and an opportunity to build a new future together. I also sold her bow.
I think the thing is that the Tenakth are a different culture, and while Kotallo has personal beef with Regalla, a lot of Tenakth see her side and join her eagerly. I understand. Hekarro should really have had the decency to finish her when he had the chance. Even he regrets not doing it. Aloy in Forbidden West has no such weakness. She either kills Regalla or she takes her on a suicide mission and throws her into Specters as a shield. Neither one of those spares her life. Aloy doesn’t expect her to live through either experience, so there really is no “Spare Regalla” option. There is just “kill her now” or “use her as a shield” option. The only one who isn’t pleased by this is Kotallo and even he’s willing to give it some rope.
What you state is pretty true but from a story perspective, even though Aloy said it could be a suicide mission she wasn't really expecting her team to die. Kinda the same situation with Varl. Aloy couldn't have known. I myself wouldn't have spared her if it was me in Aloy's shoes but herself as a character: she seems to look at the longevity of the situations she's delt with. Always thinking of what could benefit her and therefore benefit the bigger picture. Basically the "heart ❤ option" whenever the prompt pops up lol
@@taecampus I do think Aloy wasn't expecting everyone to die in the mission against the Zeniths. But she also wasn't expecting everyone to make it. She wasn't too affected by Regalla dying, and I'm pretty sure she wouldn't have minded Sylens biting the dust as well. This might also be why Aloy still doesn't open up to anyone else. Varl's death hurt, so she's not too keen on being close friends with people whose life expectancies were not long. That said, it appears most Tenakth die young anyway, so maybe Aloy's found a way to make her peace with constant violence and death through their ways. She definitely gets along with an awful lot of Tenakth.
I also think a lot of people have missed the very subtle but deep feeling Hekkaro had/has for Regalla. You can see it in his face when he talks about her. Whether it was romantic or platonic, he loved her and trusted her, and the betrayal wasn't enough. He had hope she would change. You want the best from and for the people you love, and that's what I saw in him, and most of the reason I spared her
@@jakeking3859 I agree 100%. Whether Hekarro viewed Regalla as a lover, a child, a protégé, or a squadmate, he just couldn't bring himself to kill her. Even at the end, he was basically asking Aloy to do what he knows he should have done, but can't.
Depending on how you've played the game including sidequests, you'll likely already have a better sharpshot bow. I've been taught by the first game to always recruit the largest possible army to fight the game's ultimate bad.
A major theme of the game is finding companions, and Aloy herself is generally portrayed as moral to a fault, so combining those and my own personal preferences and the foreknowledge that she's still going to die, sparing her feels like the obvious choice. Also, I don't care a whole lot about the stats at that level, plus the aesthetic is not to my liking.
I let her live because the story is more important to me then some crappy bow, given the weapons in this game. Besides I admire the character Aloy, and I know that’s what she would have done if she were real.
I agree 👍 If I was in he'd shoes, I'd hate to say that I would've ended Regalla myself. Based solely off revenge, the pain that she has caused and the lives she has taken. All because of her egotistical and barbaric mindset. Without thinking how the other decisions could've helped in the long run. And that's where Aloy differs imo. I agree that she would've choice to have Regalla benefit them to completing their massive objective to save their world. Thats what so amazing about her character

@@rasjh3205 the whole world died because of the faro plague, and if you really knew anything about the story, you would know that Aloy believes in second chances. Playing the game and allowing her to live and fight along side of you make for a far better story then just killing her. Besides it shows a gamers character by the decisions you make.
If you think on it Regalla is essentially a foil to Helis from HZD. Both are former champions of a tribes leader, have an innate bloodlust that they justify with service to a cause, are deluded about their potential, develop a hatred of Aloy as the story progresses, were used as a pawn by some other force, and have a beast of a final battle. However Regalla is female, is of similar stature to Aloy, develops an actual respect (however grudging) towards her enemy, and can at least be reasoned with up to a point. While Aloy despised Helis for killing Rost, she merely opposed Regalla and even respected her for "dying on her own terms" while Helis was just killed and forgotten. She was also more tactical in her use of machines (Helis just used them as attack dogs) deploying her forces well and having counters well prepared during the Massacre at Barren Light, and using a distraction and a suicide-bombing Rockbreaker during the Kalrut. Helis died never even realising he was being used by HADES, while Regalla seams not to have cared if anyone was or not. So while Regalla may have played a similar role as the principal "Human" enemy (the Zeniths dont really count as human anymore), there were still important differences. It will be interesting to see what human enemy we will have to face in the third game.
In most games I go with the thought of "the dead serve a purpose but does it serve me." Basically will their death let me gain something more valuable then letting them live. In most games, other then the satisfaction of killing an annoying npc, most of the time letting them live gives you a gain in the end. In this situation you get an item either way so its pretty much a neutral stance in that case but letting her live also lets you get an extra cutscene so point there. This is pretty much the same thought process for Mass Effect. Letting optional characters live usually gets me bonuses or extra content down the road even if its just a cameo. If that wasnt the case alot more characters would be put down if for no other reason then common sense.
I think the additional dialogue and her involvement in the last mission made sparing her much more worth it. I wish we’d gotten even more scenes with her to be honest. But luckily they left her fate open-ended, so we may not have seen the last of Regalla.
There is a potential bug where Regalla is still alive in the base after sacrificing herself in the final mission. Regalla so tough she can die in a cutscene and STILL survive!
Lol i got that. That somber tone after the end mission, and i go down to the basement, and SURPRISE! It really threw me off lol. Its a pretty nutty bug, but also pretty funny so while i wanna see it fixed, its not the end of the world
My only question is if she’s dead at the arena. Does Aloy need to fight that group of Spectors in the end? Look through all RU-vid videos no one shows that. I guess that screen never exist if she died first then. P.S That bow is not legendary anyway. Glad I spare her
if you think about it her and rost are very similar. both were wronged by the carja. both were over taken by vengence and wrath. they were not evil or dispicable. also think of the tenkath culture. they are a warrior culture and have always been fighters. so from her perspective hekkaro really did betray not just regalla but also the tenkath.
Rost was never wronged by the carja, it was some bandits and he only went after those that attacked the nora and killed his daughter. They are nowhere near the same
I think sparing her is the right way. Yes she did bad things but she still is a more honest and relatable character then some others (looking at the Sky Clan Leader) as she does everything she does, because of her own values and the fact she definitely has a severe PTSD.
The armor is much higher in the armor tiers than the bow is in the bow tiers. The dialog, the scenes, all that is why you spare Regalla. Mostly though, it is what Aloy would do. Take no chances. Bring every resource and advantage to bear. Otherwise Zero Day will occur again, and that night will never have a Dawn.
I spared her. But that was more of a moral thing that for any reward. Having played through zero dawn and now forbidden west, I just felt that Aloy wasn't really into killing someone that was already defeated. it was always a survival thing. Now that being said, if killing her gave me a legendary gear, I would probably go back and stab her a few times hahaha. but given that you are near the end game at that point, Her bow isn't really anything to write home about.
I like her character. Now that I know I’ll get an armour for sparing her life? I won’t think twice when I get to that part. Thank for the insight and great video as usual
I don’t know if it was a bug, but I spared regalia and after the final mission when I went back to the base, she was still hanging out in the server room downstairs. Her dialogue was even a little different, but I think it was still basically her pre-battle dialogue set
If they make a new game + i bet we can get both rewards, that's what i like about new game + in horizon, you got the chance to get the best of the best in many new games

I like Regalla and I never viewed her as an antagonist. If irl or I was to play this game blindly and get the armor because I'd let her fight with me, I'd tell her to wake up, use them explosives of her's then bounce to victory and hear why she wanted to die back there later but letting a person like that who talks about vengeance and betrayal like it happened yesterday live; especially after forcefully stopping them from gaining revenge is kinda messed up, so RIP.
It makes more sense for the story to kill her but these alternative scenes are really good. Her voice acting is amazing. Too bad we didn’t see more of her before the choice to kill her.
I well never spare Regalla. She did to much bloodshed on humans and only cared about war. It's doesn't matter in my point of view for the bloodshed on humans both good and bad. The only thing that matters is the fight against the machines. That's why when kings and warcheifs put their differences aside. And fight together. When they have the same enemy. Regalla only cared about war and vengeance. On humans.
Because of her causing so much suffering I first decided to give her a fate worse than death but when she embraced it I felt like I have made a huge mistake.
The armor set is ok but not nearly as good as the bow, I killed her for the bow. You need to properly equip that bow to make it a viable alternative to legendary bows but once you do it really has a place in the inventory of a stealth build.
I’ve been following the heart options since Zero Dawn. How I would do it in real life. Well worth it. Same with Nil who also ended up being in Forbidden West.
I'm more of a brains option, which is why I find it annoying how in this instance and with Olin we're forced to choose heart/fist. That said, the fact I choose the brain option at all means I can't morally justify taking the fist choice afterward. To kill in the heat of battle is one thing, but do so after having taken a moment of consideration becomes cold blooded murder.
Eh, if you can spare Sylens of all people, then at least let Regalla go out in a blaze of glory. Remember, Regalla was only able to make her move because of the resources Sylens was providing her (indirectly, as his modus operandi)

Neither the armor nor the bow matters - you can get better ones. To me, if you kill her you miss out on the later interaction and that's all that matters. If a player isn't interested in that, just kill her and be done.
Such a strong, fierce woman. But her pain was too much. She just wanted to end it and be with her brothers. Couldnt live with what happened. I chose to spare her so she could have a good death. She still had to pay for what she did, but made more sense to use her and she benefitted too. Such a great character
Considering there is a New Game+ where you can go through the game in a new playthrough while still having everything you ended the first playthrough with, I would kill her in one playthrough, and then save her in the next. That way you're getting both the bow and armor.
That easy, She come back in Horizon 3 as she survive the Specter and the building falling on her head and ACTUALLY use her in the story instead of having her posturing 80% of the game for one fight.
I played the game w/o any spoilers until credits rolled. So I used logic and spared her so she could aid in the fight against the Zeniths. I typically don't pay attention to the rewards I get from completing a mission, so was pleasantly surprised about the armor I got from sparing her. Should New Game+ arrive, I'll kill her to get the bow. But I'm glad to get extra cutscenes to flesh out her character. I was pleasantly surprised to discover her voice actor. Wow! Was very surprised. Sparing Regalla's life to assist in the Zenith fight in the future was a no-brainer. However, Yarra/Dekka decision annoyed me much. I didn't care for either option, but, eventually, chose the lesser of the two evils (my belief at the time) and selected Yarra. I still don't know if I chose correctly, though I've watched videos to indicate either choice made no difference in the side quest that appeared afterwards.
For me personally the fact that there even is an option to spare her means I have to. To kill in the heat of battle when your own life is on the line is one thing, but to kill an already defeated opponent in cold blood is just plain murder. Honestly, this is also one of the reasons I've always been a little uncomfortable with things like the bandit/rebel camps. I do clear them out for completion's sake, but I do wish Aloy had a non-lethal alternative to silent strike. In HFW especially, I also wish that defeating the camp leader would cause any remaining rebel there to just runaway so I could loot the camp in peace without feeling the need to clean up the stragglers.
That's how I feel as well, with the rebel camps/outposts, and similar places in other games. In a real world situation, I feel like Aloy would definitely try for a diplomatic solution instead of cold blooded murder.

Narratively speaking sparing her is a great mistake because how the character is built up, but I'm disappointed that if you finish her off you don't get any extra cutscenes with other characters or even at the end nobody takes it's place at the final fight. However if you decide to spare her you get some extra scenes and dialogues that add absolutely nothing to the story but at least that's better than nothing and yeah you do get a good weapon but isn't even the best in the game so I guess I'mma kill her next time for my NG plus run
The game has been out 10 days. I've put in around 100 hours and have yet to reach this bit. Isn't it rather spoilery to put this out??? Surely most players won't have finished.
Yes, but it's made very clear it's spoiling the game, while not outright spoiling in the title and thumbnail. This is the best that can be done to talk about a specific choice without fully spoiling it. You chose to watch a video that made it very clear it would be spoiling the game and while it did have light spoilers in the title and thumbnail, watching the video is the only way to be completely spoiled. Besides, if he isn't fully spoiling the game in the title and thumbnail who cares when the video is released? This isn't one of those "The main character died" videos where the title and thumbnail completely spoil major plot elements with no consideration, this is the best that can be done for the video it is. I mean the first sentence he says is "this video contains spoilers", you could have chosen not to watch it. The only other way I could see it changed is if the title said, "Choosing Regalla's Fate or Regalla Choices", the latter is too vague.

As someone else mentioned, she's voiced by Angela Bassett, who has been nominated for or won Golden Globes, Oscars, and Emmys. So, probably one of the highest paid voice actors in the cast. If you didn't like her voice, that seems like a You problem.
wat? Angela Basset is not an atrocious voice actor, and Regalla is no exception to that. I actually found her conversations if you spare her to be very well done and emotive. This is not ME Andromeda. There is some actual good writing here.
