Brian, I'm a lead professional drone Pilot for the Los Angeles City Fire Department and have my own Ariel UAS business. I just got into RC planes because of you and the camera crew. I just want to say thank you for all that you do. I am fully addicted to this and look forward to many more of your informational videos. My first flight was July 30 with the Carbon Cub S 1.3m and now I own and fly five different RC planes. Thank you for all that you're doing.

So glad to hear this Derrick! This is so cool, and very glad you're making a move into Fixed Wing - isn't it a blast!?!? Glad you're here with us, and some day, I would love to hear more about your Firefighting experience.

For sure! We love to share when repairs go well ;) Sometimes we don't get so lucky, but WHO WANTS TO PAY to fix this stuff???!??! I'm sure Horizon Hobby would cringe like crazy seeing this, but too bad so sad - the serviceability of this and the F-16 80mm, to me...HUGE selling points!

I swear its the easiest strongest paintable/sandable and moldable product on the market! thank you for you and your wife"s amazing work! your 100% correct in saying that landing the Viper is the most exciting and difficult to achieve but also the most rewarding part of flying, finishing a good flight with a perfect landing is what i believe we all strive for!

When working with aluminum like this with that type of damage where you think it will possibly break, it's always good to add a bit of heat from a torch to the area and part to make it more malleable and less prone to damage. Nice fix to the gear regardless, but it's now extremely compromised and weakened for extended use.

You both rock! What flight times can you get from that 7000 battery! USMC air winger here. Try living at NAS Jacksonville FL. Nothing but jets all day. Most called it annoying sound we called it sound of freedom! Thanks for your service to this hobby!
@BrianPhillipsRC
@BrianPhillipsRC 2 года назад
I too call it AWESOME! We used to have F-16's stationed her in Des Moines and we'd hear them all the time, and I LOVED it, especially since I work at the airport occasionally and I would HAVE TO WATCH every time they'd be going up or coming down...so amazing. My co-worker used to work and live near Jacksonville FL and he worked on the bases there (doing what we both do here now - working on scales) and he said the same thing. Love hearing the sound of $10,000's of worth of jet fuel burning for no apparent reason...I generally don't like government waste, but good lordy lord...just the sound is worth it ;) As for flight time...on an EDF it's all about HOW you fly. You could get a short 3.5 min flight, but if you go up and sail it in you could stretch your times...but who's gonna do that - LOL :) I'm gonna be balls to the walls 100% throttle for about 50-75% of the flight, and then 100% throttle on landings now - LOL - don't come in with a dead pack and expect reverse thrust to help ;) I should say, I'm completely guessing on the 3.5min - gotta gauge it from my videos, but you WILL get a "Critically Low" battery warning if you're careful to set up your Telemetry Warnings in Audio Events...

Right you were lucky not often can you get away with straightening alloy parts, with a set of circlip/E-clip/C clip or what ever other names they are known as, when removing get a clear parts bag to feed over the part with the clip and remove/replace the clips in the bag so if they fly off the bag will retain it, or better still get a set of E-clip tools Fastrax, Hudy and a few other companies make these multi size tool set's and you will never have to stress over losing a clip. Love the Jet still not confident to make the leap into jet and any fast plane yet still not gone from 6G to 3D more than a handful of times with my VTOL's still hanker after a Draco as it being able to take off and land in such a small area'
@BrianPhillipsRC
@BrianPhillipsRC 2 года назад
Don't rush it. There will be amazing EDF jets when you're ready. If you push it, these planes are dream killers!!! I know the feeling of wanting to get right in there, but you will be so much happier if you can hold off for a while longer and possibly start with something super simple like the Habu 70mm - so easy to fly, it's almost not even an EDF ;)
@Nickwillfixit

Excellent, video. I must have this PLANE! Looks like flying butter in the sky when you fly. BTW, at 7:10 you may call these "snap rings" circular retaining rings, tomato, potato. You did a fantastic job fixing the landing gear and getting the "camber" almost perfect. You're truly the modern-day MacGyver of RC repair! 🙂 Curious, when you use reverse thrust in this Viper 90mm, it doesn't mess with the internal wiring or any of the electronic components? I imagine it whips up quite a storm in the fuselage.

Same happened to me the other day, bent the strut on a rough landing, but fixed it like you did. I also noticed the suspension is a tad to soft. You think it would be possible to replace the spring inside the suspension?
@BrianPhillipsRC
@BrianPhillipsRC 2 года назад
You can take it out, and plop some FILLER in there if you want to make it harder. I like it softer...I'd be included to cut them down by 1/3 and make it even softer...but still not "modifying" this beauty ;)
@GregoryC21

I was cringing when you were working on those e-clips. There is a tool that makes removal much easier. Dynamite makes it and it handles 1.5mm - 5mm. Here is an important truism - The right tool makes a difficult job easy but the wrong tool makes an easy job DANGEROUS. Loved watching you fix the gear. Hey Brian I watched your build and radio setup of this jet. I put the CG were you had yours. But its like really really tail heavy. I moved the Battery all the way up to the front to give it a more balanced CG. I haven't flown it yet, been snowy and cold here in Indiana. My question, is it suppose to be that tail heavy. I had another one of the Viper 90's but the servo burnt out while in flight so crashed. The local hobby store did replace it. And that is how I have the new one now. On the first one I watched your build video and the battery I believe was placed more towards the center of the tray. So I cant imagine what would have changed that drastic to have to put the battery all the way in the front of the tray now.
@BrianPhillipsRC
@BrianPhillipsRC 2 года назад
I like the jet's CG to be as far back as I can tolerate to help with flare on landings, otherwise, you'll be flat at best on final....BUT you've got flaps and reverse thrust!

I would second the idea of gravel not being a great idea on the 70mm...it already suffers from nose gear issues as stock, BUT there's some mods using FMS gear to fix this, but it's not cheap. As for what you ACTUALLY need...look at the link for the ESC in this Timber Evo ;) You need the Avian and you'll need to get the right SIZE, since there's a bunch of them out there now. You will set it up JUST like I did with this plane (the 90mm), but Borat's Cousin is correct that you'll need a fresh channel for it, FYI.

Reverse thrust.. wow.. Are the landing gear rubber or plastic?
@BrianPhillipsRC

They're foam. Stock tires. Low Bounce would be real nice, and might help on this plane a bit.

Idk if you’ve said this before but how many channels do you need for pilot fatigue?
@BrianPhillipsRC
@BrianPhillipsRC 2 года назад
Same channel used for controlling the Thrust Reverse. It's more about MIXING. It's pretty easy to setup, if you go back ONE video, I believe I cover the whole process on that last one. (I do a "refresher" in this video too...I thought)

Nice that you could fix that gear. I see they cost fifty bucks. A couple of those post landings were hard enough to show the gear is still strong. I know you won't but maybe somebody will buy a C-clip tool for you.

Better to bend the landing gear (which is replaceable) than to rip it out of the wing...... (Landing gear set ~ $50)

How much money did you have to save to get into the hobby. ?
@BrianPhillipsRC
@BrianPhillipsRC 2 года назад
To start off, I was spending about $200-$300 each month. This was enough to get a new plane about every month. I also bought a LOT of parts....LOTS and LOTS of parts. I still have TONS of little crap downstairs that I draw from when I need to fix something. I was very bad about going to Hobbyking and buying loads of little things I didn't need, but later I found it very helpful to have it around when I needed them...BUT I would have been better off to just buy stuff that I KNEW I needed. As for how much to get started now, you could be in the air for maybe $300-500 for a nice setup with charger, transmitter, and plane, and a spare battery. Another $500 would get you into a nice charger and a few more batteries. So...it's not Cheap at the beginning, but you can spread out a lot of the spending and get a long ways with your first few planes. Here's my "Beginner List"... Description - Purchase - Videos Habu STS 70mm RTF - bit.ly/38Kilv1 - ru-vid.com/group/PLXTH0DstRDc5fYbIobNAtMUz2EoT7FGLl Apprentice 1.5m RTF bit.ly/2OIjVHd - ru-vid.com/group/PLXTH0DstRDc4LA2ldEUZQMVWkJpCslxRc Carbon Cub S2 1.3m RTF bit.ly/3bS2r3O - ru-vid.com/group/PLXTH0DstRDc4Y9gQ5S22B_3SXmtqylcmM T-28 Trojan 1.1m bit.ly/3eOh9Lk - ru-vid.com/group/PLXTH0DstRDc6-_gHuXM6a1Nf_2nRxrmlc Apprentice 1.2m RTF bit.ly/2OIjVHd - ru-vid.com/group/PLXTH0DstRDc43Qw4KNOOfzt14n6ZBo3LS Sport Cub S2 UMX bit.ly/3cDYUW1 - ru-vid.com/group/PLXTH0DstRDc5gY8qX_x8kAJq3glGMXjDy AeroScout 1.1m - bit.ly/30MNn1c - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-vfZZQXx7jU4.html ...remember, we all start somewhere, and getting a simulator before you have a plane to keep the fire under your seat, will be a ticket to procrastination, but you can do that too to get started, but I suggest it when WINTER comes for the first year of flying, so you can keep flying EVERY DAY. RC Sim bit.ly/3q5rSUF ...P.S. the simulator is expensive, but you WILL save as much as you spend on it in one year from saving a plane...unless you're a complete natural and never make mistakes ;)

That's the thing. I bought the HABU STS for my first plane, and after crashing it a BUNCH of times, I can now fly in expert mode all the time now. I'm never in beginner mode. Also capable of flying inverted the hole flight if I wanted to without crashing. What would be a good second bush or retractable landing gear plane?

Brian says he gonna make this Jet his biotch 😁😂 Not in those exact words of course lol If I flew as much as you Brian and owned that field in the back I'd definitely make a runway back there It's not to far to walk or you could ride the electric scooters or bikes I'd get that stuff the TestFlite guys use I forget the name of it but it's easy to put down and easy to take up if ya want to move it or put it up for winter etc I'm pretty sure they leave theirs down year round It's really tough material from what I hear I could set and watch you land and take off all day It's pretty exciting watching you drop in over the trees or navigate under the power line and dodge all the little bushes and trees and try to get it straight at the same time I'm sure it's pretty dang challenging and fun AF at the same time lol so maybe you like the challenge so much you don't feel the need for a bigger better laid out runway meaning ya don't have to drop down so fast and get lined up Sorry for writing a book lol I get excited talking about planes I can't shut up hehe Kinda reminds me of someone on YT 🙄 lol Love the 90MM That thing is awesome I wouldn't be able to shut up flying that thing either I'd be F bombing like crazy 😁 Nice fun flying vid Brian Thanks to Camera Crew's great skills of tracking a dot in the sky she made it very enjoyable to watch 🔥 Everybody should really appreciate Camera Crew If it wasn't for her this wouldn't be half as good 👍 Again sorry for the long comment 🤪 lol ✌️
