A review of the new 6 wheel generic pre-grouping coaches from Hornby in the LNER Teak Livery
Well this year is certainly off to an interesting start. Less than two weeks after @Hornby Model Railways big 2021 range announcement the first products have arrived and I was lucky enough to get my hands on a set of their new generic 6 wheel coaches in LNER teak livery.
In addition to the 6 wheel coaches, Hornby are also releasing 4 wheel versions too for an extra bit of variety in the range and all of the coaches are available with or without light pre-installed that work using magnets and a reed switch in the roof.
Railway modellers have been crying out for pre-grouping coaches for a while now but with there being so many variations between the different companies it's never really been feasible as a short run. Now Hornby are taking Hatton's lead and and bring out a range of generic coaches, meaning that they've created a few select types of coaches that they can apply multiple liveries too. For example LB&SCR, LNWR, GWR, Southern and beyond right up to British Railways.
These pre-grouping coaches certainly won't be one for the purists so if you like everything to be prototypical on your railway then sadly you'll have to keep on waiting. But for those of us who don't mind there's a fantastic opportunity here to get some ready to run 4 & six wheel coaches in a variety of colourful liveries as a great price. Considering that these had almost all sold out when I bought them it seems safe to say that Hornby are on the right track... if you'll pardon the pun.

Very good review, I agree that the fact they are 'generic' doesn't let them down. They seem to be great, solid models - will look great on your 'modular' layout 😀

Absolutely, as long as you're not an expert in pre-grouping coaches (which I'm definitely not! 😂) then these look great and are really well made. You're right, I can't wait to get these modular layout - they'll make it look even bigger! Thanks for watching 😃

I just watched this video and I think I'm gonna have to get some for my own layout. I like how Hornby didn't necessarily model a super specific coach for a specific railway, and instead allowed modelers like myself to customize them. I love those lights too!😃
@ThatModelRailwayGuy

Awesome, yeah I think they've got a big opportunity here to make lots of very nice looking coaches in different liveries - especially as a lot of Hornby's main customer base don't necessarily know the detailed in and outs of pre-grouping coaches (myself included!). I'm surprised they haven't done any in an SE&CR livery though - I would have thought they would be very popular! Thanks for watching 😃

Great review, great voice over. I've read the rubbish over on rmweb but it's the usual suspects going on about accuracy. As you said these coaches are not marketed at them, it was never the intention. They are meant for modellers like me, someone who does not have a depth of prototypical knowledge but roughly knows that livery a, in that time period goes with x loco's etc. I've ordered some SR as that's my region and era, however these LNER look great, maybe i could use rule one and put them behind my Hush Hush when it arrives!

Thanks! Oh I wouldn't worry about what was said on RMweb, I certainly don't! 😂 I don't think anyone intends to be nasty but they do sometimes forget that there's fellow human being reading their responses. Anyway back to the coaches, yes you've hit the nail on the head there on who these are aimed at. Hope your Southern coaches arrive soon although you have got me thinking about what a Hush Hush would look like pulling a brach line train now! Thanks for watching 👍

Great video. I heard that these are actually based on nbr carriages, so they certainly suit that loco. Perhaps hornby were honestly just making some nbr 6 wheelers then saw hattons carriages and decided to pump them out is tons of different livery but I think I'll be buying a mix as they'll make a lovely heritage railway vintage set with carriages of different types and they hornbys brake coach looks very good as a lbscr brake

Good review. I do like the look of these four wheel coaches, though I do wonder why they didn't make the design 100% accurate to a certain type of coach. Like, I know these are supposed to be generic, but like, they could have modelled one or two specific ranges of coaches, and then repainted those to serve as generic, essentially modelling one or two company's coaches accurately and repainting those for all the generic variants. That's not to say there's anything wrong with these, but I do think it might have potentially a missed opportunity. This is just something I wanted to put out there, cause it's a thought I've had since the announcement. I hope I didn't butcher what I was trying to say here, it's not a slight on these, just a thought I wished to express. Apologies for the ramble.
@ThatModelRailwayGuy
@ThatModelRailwayGuy 3 года назад
It's definitely a valid argument and there are rumours flying about that Hornby were originally planning to make Stroudley pre-grouping coaches to go specifically with their Terrier's before Hatton's announced the Genesis range. (But that is just rumours!) Although I don't know for certain I suspect Hornby (and Hattons) probably thought that modelling a specific coach set and slapping different liveries on it would most likely lower the sales of all but the correct livery. Although there may be a boost of sales in the correct livery it probably wouldn't be enough to cover the other lost sales. I know it sounds a bit backwards but after all Hornby are a business and they'll do whatever causes them to sell more products. Again this is all just a theory and I have no connection to Hornby or any inside information. Thanks for watching 😃

From what I've seen it looks as though they're going after two different markets. Hornby has a wider appeal and will attract more people who know less about the prototypes and just want a coach in a colourful livery. Meanwhile it looks like Hatton's has done a lot of work to make their detailed coaches as accurate as possible while still being generic. Both takes have advantages and at least now we have a choice of pre-grouping coaches. Thanks for watching 😃

Yes Starkiller100 Hatton's coaches are superior when it comes to detail and with No lifetime baned. Great to have luggage rails and step board fix want is great as I can put people in with luggage and with the light it looked amazing in the dark. Plus it going to be easy to remove the step Board if you don't want them. And you get an 18-pin decoder socket in lit models for digital control but if you use analog want I use easily just needs to applied power to the track and then there will turn on. I'm not big fans of all of the 6 wheels coaches but will the Hatton one if you got 6 wheels you can just remove the Centre wheels want I will be doing to some of the 6 wheel coaches I can have some small 4 wheels coaches and some bigger 4 wheels coaches. I will be sticking with Hatton one as I pre-order the NCB blue one but waiting for the Oxford Rail 2021 future announcements if their not things I like I will be ordering (L&Y brown & umber, LNWR , SECR ) I wish Hornby give you the choice with the 6 wheels coaches to take out the Centre wheelset as there I was go for the LNWR. The French ones are based on various German designs (mainly Prussian). Although these do look similar to the Saxon version that did not have a clerestory roof. And the 4 wheelers are missing the 'sprengwerk' construction on the chassis (reinforcing frame to compensate the missing centre wheel)

There is no value in comparing to the Hattons Genesis coaches as we are going to have an opportunity of mix matching the coaches and giving us a un even look to the train which will match up well to real life trains
@ThatModelRailwayGuy
@ThatModelRailwayGuy 3 года назад
I completely agree. Rather than bickering over who was working on it first we now have a choice of pre-grouping style coaches and, as you said, can mix the two for a variety of body styles. Thanks for watching 😃

How unrealistic can it look if I run this beauties on my H0 layout?
@ThatModelRailwayGuy
@ThatModelRailwayGuy 3 года назад
Hi there, it depends on what your bar for realism is really. If the rest of your models are H0 scale then these would probably look bigger than everything else but if that doesn't bother you there's nothing to stop you applying "Rule 1". Thanks for watching 😃

That Model Railway Guy good review on the Hornby 6 Wheel Generic Pre-Grouping. But will who review the Hatton's one? But this Hornby model not good because here a lot of little problems with the details want to make it a big problem and not good quality. Frist the battery mechanism has taken away one of the compartment. And no luggage rails with the coaches and with them having light I want to put people in plus luggage as it would make them look really good want I can't do with the Hornby one. Plus the only colour want I have seen from first-class coaches on your and Jennifer E. Kirk video has only been blue seat want was not all ways the case. And who got to fix the step board wants is not good quality as the Hatton one we have them fix and easy to removed them if you don't like them. Who said the track powerded lights would make drag yes that true but look at how free moved the Hatton coaches were on Jennifer E.Kirk and Sam trains video. Plus where I buy goods as a customer I don't want there to be light bleed and take the roof off the brake coaches and they being putting card in and painting. As the value of the goods wants I buy four would go down and not fair on the customer. I like the bigger coaches like the 6 wheel but I think the 6 wheels should have 4 wheels on but with the Hornby one I can not take out the Centre wheelset on 6 wheel coaches if I want to make it a big 4 coaches with the Hatton one I can do that. Plus for four-pound, I will be stick with the Hatton one. Plus the light only gives who 200 Hours want not much because if I only used 3 hours of light per day only in a week I was used up 21 hours of light or that said around 20 hours. Now that does 200 Hours division 21 per week only get 66 days or around 70 days. The light thinks cost £12.99 and the time you pay for the mail around £16.00. Meaning is not that cheaper in the end and costs more than the Hatton one. Now we now can get around 70 days let see how many time in the year I was has to replace the light we get around 365 days meaning I had to replace them light 5 times in a year it would coast £64.95 and not include if you got more then one. Now because we now want the prices going to be for the year £64.95 we can find the total value if I have them for 70 years it was being £4546.50 I could get around 126 Hatton's one for that prices and with no worry about the lifetime baned Because you got to Keep taking the roof off the Hornby one you could damage the toolings. The Hatton one is a lot better as you get more details plus and with light or not light. No lifetime baned I could run the Hatton's one forever with the light and don't need to worry about filling them up. Plus you get I luggage rails and step board fix to the model and it going to be easy to remove the step Board if you don't want them. Plus if you are I DCC used you get 18-pin decoder socket in lit models for digital control plus the model light will work with analog train just need to applied power to the track and then there will turn on. Plus if the customer likes the bigger 6 wheels but does not want the 6 wheels he can on the Centre wheelset removeable it so I will be doing a lot of that. If the coaches were 10 Pound cheaper I was not but down these comments. But keep safe That Model Railway Guy in these hard times.

Phew, there’s a lot to unpack here. Firstly, yes I plan to review the Hatton’s coaches when they’re released. It was Hornby that said the pickups would create drag, presumably because their wheels are mounted in a different way to the Genesis coaches. As much as I respect Jennifer E. Kirk and Sam’s Trains, I don’t have first hand experience with the Hattons coaches yet so I wouldn’t want to comment on how well they run. Regarding the lights, if you’re able to run trains for 3 hours a day, 7 days a week that’s great but is probably more than most people manage. You don’t need to replace the whole lighting bar though, only the CR2032 battery - these are widely available and packs of multiple batteries can be bought for a few pounds. As I showed it’s easy to change and also to access the interior too so no need to remove the roof. I agree the battery compartment taking up the floor space in one compartment isn’t ideal, although personally I found it hard to see even with the lights on. But all that said it sounds like you’ve already decided you prefer the Hatton’s coaches anyway so looks like this won’t be an issue for you. Thanks for watching 😃
