Had a labrador needing a similar surgery come through the clinic I worked at. It wasn't just the inner ear that was infected on the dog but the external ear was absolutely ravaged from constantly scratching and grinding his ear against objects. We had referred the dog to a specialist because the damage and infection were simply beyond what our little clinic could do. The specialist did the same surgery but they ended up having to take the outer ear as well. Seeing that dog 2 weeks post-op was like meeting a brand new dog! Sure, he was a little lopsided but he was so HAPPY!

They said they were paying $1,000 a month for medication so I imagine they were willing to do what needed to be done. My thought is what was the vet telling them and how much money was the vet getting from them over all that time.

It sounds like the vet (s) they were seeing were just prescribing a series of medications that might help. It’s really hard to know exactly what’s going on with your dog if your vet isn’t being completely honest with you.

@vecb1290, you need to clean the wax out of your ears because the owners said they have been cleaning the dog's ears for three years. That means the dog had an ears infection for three years
@IcicleFerret

First rule of medicine: Do no harm. When a pet presents with ear infections, the vet isn't going to rush to radical surgery right off the bat. The correct course of action is to treat conservatively, and increase the severity of treatment over time. The owners and previous vet did just that, until reaching a point where treatment was beyond the normal vet's ability to provide. As mentioned in the video, this kind of surgery will leave the dog largely deaf in that ear and could potentially damage the facial nerve. That is a treatment of last resort and not something any good vet is going to prescribe for chronic ear infections without ruling out every other possible treatment.

I adopted a 14 year old cockapoo rescue. He had had chronic ear infections and his ears looked like this dog's. I tried everything the vet recommended. Finally, I started to research myself and found Zim's Cocker Spaniel Ear Cleaner. Within 3 days he was feeling relief and by week 2 his ear swelling had gone down and the infection was abated. I then went to a maintenance of once a week and he lived happily with us until he passed a few years later!

It was mostly on but had times when it was off. So they probably thought the infections were hard to fight and then they had it licked when it was off. @@hamstermunchies5558 True. I'm just assuming that when an infection has festered for 3 years, any vet that doesn't consider surgery is negligent. Maybe I'm dense but I've been trying - and failing - to visualize how one removes what amounts to a "hole". I mean, the ear canal is, for the most part, just space, right? So how do you remove "nothing"? If what's being removed is the tissue forming the sides and end/bottom of the canal, and then, I guess, sewing the opening closed, doesn't that leave sort of a big cavity in the dog's head? Or is that what's done and then the cavity is filled with... something? 🤔

Poor dog. I use auris from Puur. Great stuff. Helped already a lot of dogs with it. If my dogs shake to often their head I always check the ear. It's been years ago that we ever had ear problems.

Why in the world would they wait 3 years when he was in so much pain?

My first cat a tortie had chronic polyps in her ear with chronic infections. They were going to do surgery to remove the ear canal but she unexpectedly passed away. I feel for his owners having to deal with it first hand

Goes to show medication doesn’t fix all problems… sometimes it’s beyond what can be done by the owners… I’m so glad to see he’s got his ear fixed and hopefully will never have to experience that pain again… my sister got frequent ear infections and man it just knocked her out… can’t imagine 3 years!!! Brave boy ❤ Also my mind is blown… $1000 a month for 3 years?! $36,000… that’s as much if not more than the surgery to fix his ear… 😮

Why wait 3 years before having his ear operated on? Surely the vet would have suggested it long before now 😢
