This style of anime is SO effective at capturing a genuinely nightmarish feeling, like you're truly losing your mind.

23:18 Darren Aronofsky not only watched Perfect Blue before making Black Swan, but also before making Requiem for a Dream. The bathtub scene is identical.

Iirc, he literally bought the rights to the film so he could use scenes from it in his own films.

@@Silburific No he didn't, this is complete bs made by his fans to defend him for ripping off Kon left and right. There isn't a single official piece of evidence to substantiate that claim. Aronofsky himself never said such a thing and neither did Satoshi Kon. Check your source and varify the facts before regiurgitating misinformation and aiding in the spread of lies.

@@Silburific actually, satoshi kon himself said he never bought anything and even comented on the "homage" darren did with the bathtub scene. to me it's ugly af the man waited for satoshi kon to die so he could rip off perfect blue more deeply

8:45 "is this real or is this part of the show?" That only escalates, quickly.

You nailed all the reactions I had when I first watched this. For over 20 years, it's been one of my favorite movies, not just anime, to watch and rewatch. It's incredible how prophetic it was with the rise of internet and social media and its influence on fandoms and even just how prolific those investigative serial shows like CSI, Criminal Minds, Bones, and many others would become in just a few short years. The way it plays with cinematic conventions keeps us in the same head space as Mima. We don't always know what is and isn't real. The director, Satoshi Kon, was brilliant in how he used cinematic techniques in his animation, and I consider all his works masterpieces. He sadly died very young in his 40s and only has four movies and one tv show in his filmography as director, and I highly recommend all of them, especially Millennium Actress as it serves almost as a counterpart/counterpoint to Perfect Blue in the way it explores the more positive aspects of celebrity and fandom. Either way, I'm excited for the rest of anime month.

I consider Perfect Blue and Paprika to be perfect movies and there are very few movies I'd call a perfect movie. Darren Aronofsky would probably agree given just how much influence Perfect Blue has had on his career.

I love anime like this, less fantastical and more realistic. There is so much potential for good storytelling through animation

A full series of anime movies you could watch is "Kara no Kyoukai" each film with a different runtime from 40 minutes to the full 2 hours. I believe there is 7 movies plus an epilogue

Darin Aronofsky claims Black Swan wasn't inspired by this but I don't believe it. There are way too many similarities in themes and overall production. He's still one of my favorite filmmakers though.

I really don't remember any good horror anime movie or series but If you like more "melodramatic" stories I'd say: Wolf Children, The girl who leapt through time, The tale of the Princess Kaguya. Comedy: Tokyo Godfathers, Lu over the wall, Pompoko. "What the hell is going on?": Night is short walk on girl, Paprika

I did Paprika this year, and Tokyo Godfathers is saved for December. As far as horror anime, I watched Vampire Hunter D Bloodlust, but for some reason the files were corrupted and I couldn't release it.

Another RU-vid channel I love just posted that she is about to react to this so I watched it for the first time the night before last and was BLOWN AWAY. I’ve never really been an anime person (besides Hayao Miyazaki) but this movie has turned me on to checking more out. I have Paprika on my watch list as well as Ghost in the Shell so far.

well, not totally a happy ending. The final line given by Mima is actualy spoken by Rumi's voice actress. So even in the end, you actually don't know what's real and what's fake

@@Xenoprism From my understanding, this is true of the English dub, but NOT the original. One wonders how the translators got away with such a profoundly story-altering change!
@Texy88

If they get permission to make a change like that in an international dub, then they can do it.

@@Xenoprism I second this! Satoshi Kon confirmed that he did not intend that to be in Rumi's voice. It completely changes the movie in the dub and if that wasn't the intent then fu*c whoever thought that was a good idea.

I said this in other videos might as well say it here. The last line were Mima said "No I'm real" is actually voiced by Rumi's VA (voice actress). makes you rethink about everything right ?
