To be honest this free game puts so many paid indie horrors to shame. It’s a great reminder that you don’t need excessive viscera or PT-clone tropes to make a decent horror game.
I'm not sure if you still have access to a vr headset Charlie but a vr horror game I enjoyed when I EXPERIENCED it was called kobold. Gave me that little kid don't turn around in the dark kind of fear. Might be fun to try
Charlie doesn’t get scared by video games not because he’s brave or anything. He’s just somehow gained the ability to turn off his suspension of disbelief for horror video games and movies. Normally, people go right into a story and suspend their disbelief without even thinking
Acctually if you used your own points to prove something instead of repeating what other people say you would look at any other horror game video hes done and see that the plot on all of them automatically immerse you because there so basic you cannot be able to not tell whats happening and this still doesn’t explain his no reaction to every jumpscare even fnaf jumpscares
When you've been on the platform for 10 years you've probably played your fair share of horror games. Most of the boil down to: Walk around in area, Game explains mechanics (Either literally, or intuitively), Weird things happen as you play, Spooky reveal!, Repeat if longer than 30 min playtime. Horror games have notoriously been uninventive for years now. They will have the same punchlines, just at different times. Really surprised people find these "HORROR GAME, BUT VHS????" good or scary. They're lazy and do nothing new. They don't even try to scare you, they just blast you with a jumpscare alongside the worse build ups in history. Sometimes they don't even scare you they just leave the player at a "creepy" ending, then the game nudges to you and says "Hey, wasn't that scary?". But ultimately if you enjoy them there's no harm done. Just don't go seeking for approval on your favorite video game and expect every content creator to go "Wow! This is so awesome and cool!".
Not engaging with the medium nor plot details, reading chat every 30 seconds, and going in with the intention of mocking it from the beginning. Add funny words like balls cock shit poop ding dong, and you're set.

It's easy to not be scared of a game if you're streaming, have lights on, and never take it seriously. Not that it's a bad thing but I'm just mentioning that. I don't really like the fact he calls the games bad because they don't scare him like he did with Puppet Combo though.

Watching Charlie play any atmospheric horror game is like showing your friend your favorite movie and then seeing them playing with their phone the whole time. It's fine if he's not into it, but he has absolutely no basis to say that something is bad when he made absolutely no attempt to engage with it on any meaningful level.

r/nosleep is suppose to be a sorta roleplay sub where you have to act like the stories are real. So anyone who doesn't know that will think the stories are true.
I say it shows more how it can feel like being a single woman on the road alone and feeds into the fear some of us woman have of being drugged and r*ped more than anything. Which is sadly a real fear for many of us. And that’s why it’s a little scary for myself because I want to travel and it’s something I genuinely worry about protecting myself against.

in defense of ep2, i think it's more scary if you're someone who is genuinely at risk of a scenario like that. Being a young woman stranded alone at night, with no way to contact friends/family, with strange men about is genuinely terrifying. So its playing into a realistic fear a lot of people have, but won't resonate with everyone

Making an assumption on how good a horror game is by watching one of his vids is a terrible idea. He never pays attention to anything going on in the thing, constantly checks chat, and makes jokes on any horror game he plays. Sometimes it can be slightly boring to watch because of that
genuinely speaking, i find the second story to be incredibly fun to watch others play. ive seen a lot of my favorite male streamers pick options that i (being a woman) id never even THINK to choose (for example, letting the cashier know you're driving alone). its small choices like those from difference perspectives that really make this game fun to rewatch from others

Charlie needs to play I’m on observation duty, because it is actually kinda scary sometimes but also goofy, so I think it would be fun to watch him play it.
I am fully confident in saying that while charlie is on camera nothing will jumpscare him. Except maybe a roach. But he is in the mindset to just bash out as many sarcastic insults as possible with higher linguistics. A game isn't scary if you don't let the atmosphere set in, and Charlie's character is the complete anthesis of any mood being set in. He is just a mood void.

I was fully prepared for this game to be about eating an entire lasagna dish on the couch and nothing more. I'm not even sure if I'm disappointed, but I for sure was fully prepared.
The game was boring. He had to make it entertaining to himself and chat somehow, and horror games have lost their "horror" aspect for a while now. Charlie just doesn't give a shit and that's why people watch him.
The chatter brought up a good point. Charlie never experiences a horror game really. He often plays with lights on, has chat on and reads it and the entire time makes the game and experience goofy while pulling it through the dirt. He never immerses himself into the games which is why he never gets scared or jumps, but completely freaks out when seeing a cockroach, since he himself is Charlie and completely immersed.

How people tend to enjoy these games is actually thinking of them seeing it in real life, that’s how the horror comes around, if you want to make jokes or just recognize it’s a game, unless it is masterfully weaved to instill fear and dread, people immerse themselves to feel the horror, a silhouette of a man right infront of you when you’re a kid would scared the hell out of you, but in a game, unless you can get your head into it like you are there, it isn’t really much. Yeah it is dumb, and taking a look at these games as games, they are all mostly the same and walking simulators. I think why people immerse themselves is pacing, in a shooter you see a body and laugh your ass off or not care, but with the pacing of the game, if not overdone, it is more stunning to see the body, along with living a normal life in the game around it, it all centers around immersing the player before scares. If the player is not immersed or does not care to be, nothing works. That’s what I’ve gathered at least, I mean it’d be an easier argument to make if they had vr for it, but it just boils down to the player to determine the effect

I actually found that horror game to be the scariest one I've played in years. I guess it's the fact that it's based on a realistic scenario that could happen to anyone.

I actually like subtle things you can miss like the guy walking up stairs in episode 1. Obviously doesn’t make the rest of it good but that they didn’t zoom the camera in on it and play a horror sting there was nicely restrained compared to the rest of it. Stairs weren’t even that visible from the position.
i like how all indie "horror" games reduced themselves to two categories: 1) 1 hour of build up to then get an ending that is underwhelming at best; 2) walking simulator with fakies all around and a single scare at the end

The fear in this game is more about real life not fantastic so yes it wouldn't be you running down a street being attacked by a monster is just playing on fears we have alone or travelling things grounded in reality
I think the main flaw is in the gameplay, it has a lot of cool mechanics like it using your mic in hiding spots and things like that but when you only get that fun gameplay in around 10% of it its not as good since it dosent get to explore the mechanics in depth enough, having more gameplay could increase the tension and probably end up with a better scare
also - gas stations in Europe often have basic dog food stocked. They are open 24/7 and on sundays which is not that common for other stores. It’s great if you suddenly run out of the dog food on sunday or late evening
