What do you fear? In this video we will be discussing horror as represented by the five colors of the mtg color pie. Through this lens we will be able to better understand horror in Magic the Gathering as well as the horrors of our own imagination. The mtg colors are a great way to discuss many things and horror is no different. This is the perfect video to watch leading up to Halloween. With the spooky time around the corner it is time to talk about horror in every color.

The best description I can find for “fear of authority” is a subset of “specific social phobia” - like social phobia triggered by specific social situations, and some of that can be dealing with authority figures. And it can be problematic for people who have this condition. Imagine trying to deal with working life when you’re scared of your manager, or getting through an encounter with police if you’re afraid of them.

I did not expect Green to be the color of Eldritch/Cosmic Horror, but it does seem to fit quite well.
@astuteanansi4935
@astuteanansi4935 Год назад
Kind of ironic, since the usual color of cosmic horror in MTG is colorless (things that don't fit into the system of things as we know them) or blue (things that cause madness). But the horror of nature, be it in the form of voracious animals, natural disasters, or even something as simple as being lost in the woods, is kinda similar in the sense that it's all things that fall outside of our realm of what can be negotiated with or controlled, because they have no concept of morality. Green horror is usually about nature overtaking society in such a way that all societal constructs become moot and fall apart. Green Phyrexia, for example, is the idea of natural selection taken to the point where it's basically a parody of itself, a hellhole where everything either preys on everything else or becomes prey, and the law of the strong is the only one that matters. Come to think about it, the idea of taking the worst characteristics of every color and exaggerating them to the point of caricature is pretty much the basis of all horror in New Phyrexia... I mean, the White faction is composed of religious zealots who literally want to stitch everything in the world into the same pulsating mass

Imagine you're a squirrel caught in the middle of a wildfire, that's what it's like to meet an Eldritch horror. You can't comprehend that the burning will make the entire forest stronger and more vibrant. Even the eldrazi serve the purpose of razing a plane, planting the seeds of new life, and letting them grow. They kill planar stagnation and overgrowth, on a cosmic scale they are the controlled burn, the harrowing, the crop rotation. While we're just one stalk of corn, unaware of the grander meaning.

I would say the horror born of white Terrifyies me the most, From the magic color quiz, I am a mono red, but my second highest color is white, but I think the white side is born from a desire to keep certain things pure and protect, something that red can relate to. The horror of white to me is not that you can fight back and you will fail, but that you can't fight back at all! So I guess that explains why I feel closest to the Horror of White.

@@deadded5793 tricky thing about colorless is that in the framework of this discussion there aren’t any “enemies” to give it perspective. What you’re describing as void sounds to me like the green horror. In that it has no meaning… as far as we can tell. Nothing it does makes sense and its impact doesn’t make things any clearer. It’s doing something. That must mean it wants something… right? But what? And how do I know I’m not in its way? What would it do if I *am*?! It’s the kind of thing that trying to prepare for will only make you more vulnerable, which makes you crave the security of knowledge even more as you spiral out of control. And the thing that so terrified you neither cares nor likely notices. And to be thoroughly decimated by something that doesn’t even care that it beat you is the blue-black mind’s greatest fear. @@deadded5793 as far as colorless goes, Though, the question really comes down to: can anything tied to a color even perceive colorless? I would think colorless horror is only meaningless in the sense that it is a mirror. It only does what you think it’s doing. There’s a reason each color’s horror was defined here by what scares its “enemies” on the color pie; horror is in the eye of the beholder, so a colorless horror would have to be something *every* color would look at and see *its own* worst fear. Technically possible but I just spent an hour trying to write an example and it fell apart halfway through and just boiled down to asking how each color perceives and responds to those fears. @@deadded5793 as far as the eldrazi go, they are *exactly* what was described as green horror. Almost word for word, lorewise. Beings that were born before time, outlived countless worlds, their purposes beyond mortal understanding. Blue cannot understand them and black cannot manipulate them. They only kind of count as all of the horrors because we can see all of the colors react to them as if they *were* those kinds of horror. They are white horror because they are part of an uncaring system that slated your world for deletion. Blue horror because their very existence and influence destroy the common concept of reality (as in average person doesn’t know about other planes). Black horror because their form and function are twisted and unnatural. Red horror because they are unpredictable and indiscriminately violent, they do not follow any rules and respect nothing. And I already mentioned green. Also of note the fact that eldrazi have appeared in every color identity even if with the devoid keyword. As for machines: phyrexia. Red is truly a terrifying color. Because of just how well it also compliments it’s ally’s Green and Black. Black is a sadistic color, who kills purely for pleasure. And Green is a natural color, any horror from there is natural. Wether it’s an emotion or living being. It all plays so well in the molding of the slasher. Where a slasher could be a notorious heartless killer who only kills for the sake of enjoying themself, or how a killer could literally be someone you’d never expect to have such deep and dark thoughts right down the road

I'm on the autism spectrum, and I'd say that white is the color I'd fear the most. Since high school, I've dealt with feelings of not fitting in and being punished for the smallest infractions. It often has felt like I'm not even human. The systems that were supposed to protect me have often times segregated me. At times, my freedom was threatened for not following the system. All the while, they've excused others for harassing me. As an adult, I've learned that I can't trust the judgment of my peers or the intentions of those in power. Hell, I've considered the idea that God himself (or fate) conspires against me for some reason. I'm on my own and consider self-preservation my highest ideal. So, you can say I identify with black.

The fear of a callous oppressive institution stripping away your dignity, your autonomy, even your very interiority, is a fear that is all too real. Serial killers and torturers get a lot of press, but they are limited by the soft and hard caps of biology and anatomy and institutions don't have to be. Institutions can do their work on a scale often unfathomable to most people and can work across lifetimes and generations to snowball their influence and colonize the fabric of culture. What's worse, institutions can stack their influence with other institutions and intermingle with them, so that even if you eradicate one, the others will ensure the work continues and even make space for it to return. Institutions have the most power to create suffering in this or any world that's capable of sustaining a dimension of social cohesion and an inequality of access to information and power.

So you can kinda iterate on what Dice did here by figuring out what each pair agrees on and looking at what the ally pair opposite could represent to that enemy pair. For example, BG, or Golgari, is the pairing of the circle of life. It embraces all facets of nature and is perfectly willing to meddle in life, death, and undeath, to achieve its goals as they are simply states of being in a much longer chain. The ally pairing that antagonizes it is WU, or Azorious. This pairing is the pairing of sterile order, the pairing of the machine. Azorius in this facet embodies a Kafkaesque wasteland that is not made for living things. It is the computer that is more intelligent than you could ever be, the automaton that levels the woods and paves them over. It is something larger and stronger than nature, that wants to unmake the entire chain. Another example would be WR, or Boros. These could be considered the colors of heroism. They are righteous and independent, seeking to do good for all on their own terms. They're opposed by UB, or Dimir, the colors of a coldly rational self-interest. The fear that Dimir inspires in Boros is a much more personal one, as it is a fear of oneself. Specifically, your own capacity of doing evil. It's the paralyzing fear that sets your feet in stone as you watch someone wander in front of a moving car. It's the clarity after murdering a loved one in a fit of passion. It's the banal evil of "just following orders." Dimir's horror is the weakness of character you are well aware of but do not know how to overcome, and that is something that Boros cannot stand.

Like a W centered plane were the positive aspects of each color enhances and add their touches to the goals and desires of W in their own ways while still having enough room to do their own things as long as it doesn't go against the values of W. It's an odd balance. And then there's my crippling phobia of needles, I cry like a baby every time I have to get a vaccine it's wild. They don't even hurt idk why I freak out so much

Something to consider is what happens when dealing with a horror is of multiple colors, especially enemy colors. Let's take Blue/Red for an example. How would a horror like this work within the color system? Blues enemies are Red/Green, and Reds enemies are White/Blue. However, like all enemy color pairings, their bridge color is no enemy to them, but rather an ally of both colors while refusing to stand in their way, in this case Black. Here is my theory on how this would work. Taking from Dice here, Blue wants to mess with your mind, your perception on reality itself. While normally Blue wants to feed on your loss of identity, self, or the delusion of that loss, this strength is pulled from the fears of Red, and with Red being a core part of the horror in this example, this method Blue normally uses is altered, and changed. Rather than inflicting this delusion of identity onto the self, it becomes inverted, and now it's the identity of everyone around the victim that falls into question. The victim is always sure of what and who they are, but are now unable to take anyone around them at their word, after all who could when Blue inflicts its own curiosity onto its victims, calling everything into question and never being able to truly get a proper answer. This empowers Blue's power from the fear of Green, with reality all around you no longer making sense, especially when your own eyes and ears are lying to you, or ... are they just showing you the real truth you could never see before? With Red pulling from the fears of White/Blue follows a similar path that we see with our observation of Blue. As Dice mentions, Blue & White are dependant on their organizations, structures, and communities. However, they do so with different motives and methods. While White sets these tools up to help create order, peace, and civility in order to promote its values, and hence exert control over others, Blue insteads sets up these tools to instead discover, create, foster ideas, to change the world around itself for the sake of doing so, seeking perfection of itself and the world around it. It's here where the difference shows us how Red uses Blue to bolster its strength pulled from the fear of White. In horror Red is undeniable, it is right there, always coming for you, so vicious and real that to deny it just sabotages yourself. So how does Red use Blue to its benifit? Red here wants to actually leave the structures in place, for rather than showing their inherit weakness through direct action, instead it knocks right on the door, walks right in, and siezes it for itself. This is where the perfection comes in, except its not an idealized perfection that often comes the color pairing of Red/Blue, no instead what we see is the warping of these organizations to show the weakness of its proposed virtues, its empty charity, the lies of peace. These once great structures are remade to instead promote Red's undeniable savagery, spitting its former gospel in irony as Blue reworks everything to Red's benifit. That then leaves Black, an observer in this. As the bridge color, It can often strengthen both of its allys, however in the case of horror, it becomes apparent that when you pair enemy colors together, you create an enviroment for the bridge color to florish. In this example, we have a horror turning everyone against each other, no one can trust anyone else, there's no one and nothing to turn to for salvation, you can only rely on yourself. It's here where we can actually find a salavtion against an enemy horror pairing: The Bridge Color. Against this enemy, you need an amoral hero, you need a stark indivialist, you need a group willing to slaughter its own friends family and comrades if the need for it is called, you need hero's who are limitless and able to do what's difficult. While the Red/Blue Horror is bolstering itself by warping the goverment, churches, and communities against its own people, by having people slaughtering and warping everything around them, you need a hero who never needed those communities, you need a hero who never agreed with that gospel anyway, you need a hero who always wanted it all for themselves anyway. When dealing with an enemy horror pairing, turn to the color that is best suited to side with the monster if you wish to defeat it. ( Reply and tell me what you think! )

While it is in a colour that I do tend to enjoy playing, and one of my best allies, the horror of Red hits closest to home for me. And yes, I normally play Black (and blue, but mostly black). For me, it isn't so much the fear of the Slasher, but the revelry of the Slasher. For someone my size and strength, my fear isn't just losing control, but more the enjoyment of the pain and suffering that I could inflict, if I didn't have the self-control that I do. So, yeah. To summarise more clearly, it isn't so much the fear of violence as it is the fear of enjoying that violence so that I may seek it out like an elicit substance.

Green to me is the most terrifying, because most stories with green themes feel like they're capable of inflicting some of the other colors. Thinking that an eldritch horror can rob us of our sanity (blue), murder us outright (red), or even act as an ultimate authority that ascends the laws of our realm (almost kinda like white). Let alone the fact that just setting eyes on something that was of eldritch nature already would probably inflict a sense of doom or peril pretty easily.

First: love the video, subbed and need to check out the rest This video focuses mostly on what the systems the colors represent create as fears (except maybe red) But looking at the people that inspire fear that those structures make is also interesting IMO White: those with some (or a lot) of structural power in a military/bureaucratic/religious hierarchy using the structure and loopholes to cause harm or chase vendettas (e.g. Elesh Norn, all white alligned Ravnica guilds (especially Orzov)) Blue: those willing to sacrifice most anything to gain and/or safeguard knowledge (e.g. Delver of Secrets, Dimir guild, Jin Gitaxis) Black: those willing to make more than shady deals and commit just about any crime for personal advancement (Rakdos and Orzov guilds, Liliana and her demon deals, most cards with sacrifice outlets/death triggers in black) Red: Serial Killers (for contrast the structure I think would be one of true spontaneity, where both the good and the bad can happen at any time, where you can follow your whims and impulses, even if they scream "what if you jumped into the flaming void" and there is no rational or structure stopping you or others from going through with it) Green: those who seek to either reject understanding and return to baser ideas (e.g. Garruk, brought out especially with the curse) or those who embrace it, fiercely defending it (e.g. the beauty based elves of Lrowyn who see anything aside from nature and their perfection as worthy only of indiscriminate destruction) or who spawn cults in reaponse to the unknown (e.g. Evangel of Emrakul and similar cards) Colorless: What color did you see before you were born? What is the sound of next Tuesday? Picture a completely new color. It is now manifest in the world. It shouldn't. The world refuses. It is crumbling. The Eldrazi Titans are here That or unfeeling and cold artifacts created as machines of war, eternally damned to fight until they die as we are doomed to fight then

Wow. This video was amazing. The color is pie got me into Magic and ultimately what made me fall in love with it. This video shows just how fleshed out the color pie is. Irl I would say I'm White/Blue so according this Red would be my fear. I wouldn't say it's wrong, someone who murders outside of civilized reason or rhyme does go against my moral philosophy of peace and order. That being said I'd say out these 5 green would probably be my biggest fear. Something horrifying and greater than my understanding, something truly incomprehensible and shatter my perception of reality. In game I play White/Black making me Esper (fearing Red/Green), which in my opinion shows how well made this video is! Funnily enough I have always fascinated by cosmic and Eldritch horror. On a related note Blue and Green horror are similar, both making you lose your grasp on reality and questioning everything you know. Ever since I hallucinate from a fever I have been afraid of them. And to go back to irl I have always thought that if I were 3 colors I would be Bant, so again this makes sense. I think red's horror best example isn't the slasher but war. It's immediate and indiscriminate chaos and violence. Finding yourself at the wrong end of an artillery barrage that misstook your house for an ammunition stockpile. Knowing that your town is under siege and just hoping to be lucky enough to not be burried under rubble. It's having your life be dependant on a diceroll, one that you have no controll over and just watching as the result emerges. I also would have put the eldritch and unknown things in blue considering the vast ammount of monstrous sea creatures the colors have. Green IMO is then more rooted in humility. Things you can't tame or controll and that will eat you, not of malignant purpose but because it just recognize you as food. It's time that inevitably erodes any power structure, enchantment or artifact. The fear that one day everything will end and come back to nature, that in the grand scheme of things, no matter how much controll or power you have over the world is nothing because that will also fade. Which fits for both its ennemies are obsessed with grandeur.

I think that if we identify with a color, then we do not fear it. Like a white aligned individual does not fear the system, because they more or less understand the system, and how to make it do what they want, or when it isn't working, how to fix it. A white aligned individual might start a political movement or write to a political leader to bring about change within the system. Whereas a red individual would just lash out and get sent to jail or killed. I identify with Green, and I welcome our new eldritch overlords. :D If that's the truth, if that's the way the world really works, then I accept it. And I can understand someone freaking out like Red, even if I don't approve. But my greatest fear is losing my grip on reality like the horror of Blue, and I find the supernatural sadistic horror of Black completely repugnant.

I built a BBEG for a dnd campaign who looking back is very clearly in Esper. He is disciplined, honorable, smart, utterly ruthless and cruel. But the most key aspect I gave to him to inspire fear was his appearance, and more specifically his helmet and weapons. His helmet was elongated as if to accommodate a muzzle, and it has draconic horns going back, but the freakiest part of it is that where a face should be, there is nothing but a dark reflection of your self. A large part of the goal is to make him as inhuman as possible, his movements are silent and slow, intentionally taking his time with every turn of the head, and every step. Outside of his own actions to create fear he also creates as many messages of fear as possible, from leaving cities with nothing but people hung up on crosses, to raising an entire towns population from the dead to serve him, and even leaving survivors to tell about it. He understands the power of messages and insures that every action he and his army takes, every piece of gear, every word said, delivers a message that says, “There is no negotiations, no deed too evil, no line too far, death can not save you, and I have nothing to lose. So will you join me, or will you be another feeble meat sack crushed under boot?”

@shadowthewarlord705
@shadowthewarlord705 7 месяцев назад
@@loneoutsider8004You’ve been running for what feels like hours but you know that it’s only been a few minutes. Your hair is standing on edge and you swear the forest around you is alive as you hear the snapping of branches from something giving pursuit. It’s so real you swear you can feel the heat of their breath on the back of your neck, but as you turn to face your inevitable demise to the apex predator of the forest their is nothing, a silence and peace that almost seems to mock you for your fear, for your prey like instincts. As you back up you feel it that hot breath yet again and the hairy body of a transformed lycanthrope, “Did you think you could escape me in my own domain?” You gulp quickly before attempting to run, but it doesn’t wait for an answer as a warm sensation radiates through your stomach and back and the darkness takes you as the beasts you’d been fleeing from ravage their new catch. This was meant to give off the element of horror I see from a Bant Character, it is a fear not of the unknown, nor of the unnatural. But a fear of the apex predator, a fight that you simply cannot withstand. As for the villain themself I’ll give it a crack. Bant’s bridge color is Red and therefore red will be the dominant color throughout the character, they are passionate, and free, uncaring of the other people around them and self indulgent, but horrifyingly loyal and protective of their pack. The green adds to this characteristic by adding a few things, firstly a mindset of the natural order, there is no need to feel sorry for this self serving nature as this is what nature intended, the strong dominate the weak, the predator hunts the prey, there’s little more to it. On top of this it creates an instinctual character, one may not have thought out the perfect trap or formed a strict hierarchy or laws, but one to at instinctively knows where it lands in the food chain, what is allowed, and how to accomplish it’s role as an apex predator. Black comes in and adds a level of cunning, ambition, and willingness to sacrifice everything for it’s goals. It’s goals are actually quite straightforward with red at the helm though hardly predictable. It wants to be the top dog, the apex predator, if it’s the apex predator then it’s pack had no need to worry because their leader can protect them. Whilst this goal seems simple this character is willing to due whatever it takes to do this, whether that’s slaughter every potential challenger, or convince it’s neighbors to fight amongst themselves as to weaken them for the pack. Personally I love the idea of a Gruul character I have for this character who’s pack is killed. Without his original pack he flies off the handle and reforms his “pack” but they can’t replace his old one, and so he rampages about killing or asserting his dominance over everyone. His previous pick mentality is broken, he’s selfish and will through away the lives of everyone he sees as inferior no matter how loyal they are to him, for ALL will feel his wrath for the pain caused upon him. But he is smart about it, he gathers an army of urchins, outcasts, and hurt people, manipulating them by promising revenge against the world that abandoned and hurt them when they needed the world most. But even with the entire world beneath his feet he will not be satisfied, he will want more and will never find what it is that’s missing this way. I hope this helps, please give your thoughts if you got any I’m hoping this inspires your own Bant character :)

Actually, the horror of black could take a different form than described in the video: White and Green share a belief in belonging and community. You are part of something bigger, and usually, that something will be supportive of you, at least if you are contributing to the greater purpose. Black, on the other hand, is (among other traits) selfish and solitary. So, my interpretation would be that White and Green would have an immense fear of mistrust and loneliness. The utter lack of any reliability. Imagine a normal social environment with family and friends, colleagues and partners. But you always have to watch your back around all of them. One moment of not paying attention and they will prey on you, sacrifice you for their own advantage. A minimal transgression and they will inform the authorities about you, just to look good. You can count on no one except yourself and never find rest from looking over your shoulder. This could even mix with the twisted order aspect described in the video: any person you see might not be what they seem, but rather a foul, perverted creature, ready to attack you when you least expect it. Thus, no one is to be trusted. You're utterly, completely alone in a world where nothing is how it should be.

The whole horror of Frankenstein is that Victor crossed God and Nature and now he and his whole family is being punished for it. We never learn how the monster is made but it is clear that this knowledge that should never have been brought to light. Blue seeks to learn without care for what harm the knowledge can bring about.

Two easy simplifications for this one; the first, obviously: Phyrexia. Mono color in it's purest form, with no influence from others. Secondarily: Magic, without magic. Green's horror in particular makes me think of someone just before they become Blue. Perhaps in the merging from one enemy color to the next is where true 'horror' lies for each color. What black becomes on its way to white, what blue becomes on its way to red... That's what seems to summarize these points: Not any specific fear in general.

That would rather seem to reveal those people whose underlying fear is Sadistic Malice (Black), because they have trouble (or are completely incapable) of understanding that someone can be a threat to them completely by accident. I hate Black most of all, but I can still recognize that deliberate evil is not the only form of danger in life. Not all cosmic horror (Green) is based on the fear that a god sleeping under reality hates you. A lot of it is based in the idea the god could destroy you simply by waking up, and you are utterly powerless to stop it from happening, and the god won't ever know you existed. Similarly, a thoroughly dehumanizing system (White) doesn't have to use against you by a single person who hates you. It could just be a series of mistakes by well-meaning people who have so little personal responsibility or accountability to you, because of the vast network of the bureaucracy, that they never stop to get to know you as a person to understand WHAT your problem is. The system is so big and blind that you get lost in the cracks. (Alternatively, there IS one person who is personally responsible for imprisoning you, but they LOVE you and insist that they know best for you.)
