Cryptid in Every Color

I've actually thought that a plane centered around conspiracies and cryptids would be interesting for a while now. Imagine a plane where it was like X-files and Twin Peaks, all mysterious and full of secretive horrors.

I think Cryptids could easily support a set's theme or subtheme. I considered them for my hypothetical Western-inspired plane and could easily see them appearing in Thunder Junction. I would personally put the Death-Worm on Tarkir, since a large part of the plane is inspired by Mongolia.

I would love to see a sequel going over all the two color cryptids.

I believe that the Mothman might be a closer example of a White aligned cryptid due to resembling an angel. Their sightings usually involve chasing people screaming at them in the night and the sightings of it appearing before disaster earned it’s title the Harbinger of doom. While it might be perfect in Ulgrotha Some specimens or the entity itself might be a Planeswalker.

Running a Dominaria D&D campaign you can't understand how much your videos help me. This one surely can give me some inspiration from a future fight or encounter

this video absolutely felt like an excuse to have this channel talk about cryptids and i'm all for it! the mongolian death worm as a white cryptid is something i legitimately didn't understand, but enjoyed the rest! any chance you'd be interesting in making a video on the musical colour pie? you touched on it a bit in the Bard video, but recently someone asked MaRo about a musical set and it got me thinking on what aspects of music fit each colour, and you seem just the person to delve into that! as a sort of proof of concept, i'd like to share some of my thoughts on the matter: W- orchestral music really fits white in my eyes, as it requires many to come together create music that has their instruments structured together, and often uses instruments that only exist thanks to society, such the brass section. very white-aligned music would probably also often have religious lyrics or ones that impart a lesson upon the listener U- blue likely would have a synth-heavy sound, having most of its sounds originate as mere waveforms, some tabula rasas of sorts of instrumentation. they'd probably employ more complex structures such as polymeters and polyrhythms and likely some odd timesignatures. blue musicians likely are often solo producers who do learn from others but instead of performing music spend weeks perfecting their tracks, alone in their study B- the one i have the least grasp on i feel, and tends to make me think of sample-heavy music and remixes, sampling everyone and everything, chopping up the samples and creating music that would otherwise be untennable to create without taking sounds from existing works. the worst side of it would be that of popular musicians who appropriate music made by less-empowered groups. black also would often follow more taboo and darker themes, having some forms of heavy metal be a great fit for Rakdos. clipping as a group i feel has a lot of the neutral and good aspects of Black's music, without the exploitative nature of the colour which feels like a fit for how the music industry operates R- red music would be very energetic and rhythmic, and quite emotional, the first thing that comes to mind is rock, with punk-rock feeling especially red with its raw sound, though dance music also feels a bit red, and Izzet here would likely end up being electronic dance music as a result. G- folk music fits quite well here, being passed down as tradition, and would have many come together in the harmony of music, a term that applies to both green and most music. progressive music also fits a good bit as it slowly evolves as the track progresses i hope this sounded even as half as interesting to you as it did to me! i've no idea how much you know about music but certainly there are people in your discord who do if you don't, and who probably have much better ideas than mine! have a good day!

I enjoyed this selection, I do believe revisiting this topic in the future with Dual colors and revisting mono, you'd develop the colors in cryptid even further. Well put together!

the funny thing is you could put every single cryptid no matter how horrible into Innistrad and no one would even notice that it´s not supossed to be there but others then this I would put the Monglian Deathworm into Tarkir probably stalking the hunting grounds of Kolaghan The ningen I would put into zendikar because I remember there was a merfolk kingdom underneath the frozen poles maybe it made it´s home in teh sunken ruins for the Black one Innistrad is very fitting the Devil would be fitting for New Capenna but I think it would feel right at home with the Rakdos cult the Bigfoot could also fit in the Shard of Naya either that or Kaldheims Gnottvold where it would be unbothered by humans

There's this Filipino Cryptid called the Kapre. It is a unit of a giant that perches on a Filipino equivalent of an Ironwood Tree, and is usually detected after someone realized someone was smoking, only to find-to their horror-the perched giant holding a cigar the size of a human arm! I figure this guy ought to be Green with Cloak, has high toughness/damage, and is a 5-ish to cast, as it's at least Baloth-sized.

You ever thought of making a part two with duel colored cryptids. For example I can imagine the dogman being red/green.

Like idk, theres so many cryptids, and by definition an alien would be a cryptid, so maybe the alien from john Carpenters the thing, and it would probably be all 5 colors, a shapeshifter, and probably have the ability to absorb any creature it kills to buff its own stats

As a cryptid nut, my husband had me watch this. I know a bit about MTG, (I've only played like 3 games and they were all against my husband lol) but I did have him explain a few abilities you gave some of my favorites. I'd love to see more on this subject! Mothman is my second favorite. Husband and I agree that Mothman could be blue/black. My big fave is the Jackalope. Not a whole lot to a jack rabbit with antlers, (probably just a green) but add wings to turn it into a Wolpertinger from Europe, and it could be a green/blue. Honestly I could list these all day, but some of my keyboard keys are sticking a bit. Such a bijitch to clean out. 9_9

For white criptid i was expecting Chupacabra tbh. When you think about it - lives in Mexican deserts, drinks blood (vampires can be white in mtg) and according to witnesses it has dog-like appearence (and dogs are also on white side of the color pie sometimes) but its just my two cents. Would love to hear your opinion on this!:3

Wendigo personally I think it would be a green black creature . It's a creature of unending hunger hunting and devouring to satiate its hunger but never doing so . Also it being a former human turned beast by its cannibalistic behavior induced by famine . Also yes I got some inspiration by sword of feast and famine when choosing colors for the wendigo.

I was first thinking of "won't they all have green philosphy" but you interestingly went much more with theme and aesthetic. Would you make a video about the "elemental" themes of the color pie? And maybe how and how well they fit their respective philosophies?

Now with the introduction of Omenpaths, we have a reason for Lonis to scour the multiverse for these cryptids. That is, if the chupacabras of Ixalan don't get him first. 😅

How about doing the Van Meter Visitor, the Thunderbird, and the Creatures of the Fog next? I can see them being green/white, green/blue, and green/red. Checking up on these transported cryptids later to see how the new environments has affected them could be interesting as well.

I made a custom group of cards based on cryptids. They involve them flipping at upkeep and endstep between, what is a non-threating or unassuming thing (either a creature, land or something) during opponents turns, to the cryptid during your turn

There’s some interesting perspectives on various cryptids in channeled works. Such works are those where the author claims they channeled a spirit and/or extraterrestrial of some kind for information. According to such, some cryptids are “thought-form” manifestations. These are streams of consciousness from outside our physical reality that, under certain conditions, can manifest temporary physical forms. A being matching the description of the skunk ape was said to be from such a source. Some other cryptids are said to be native to our physical reality. Most of these are usually said to live underground. Some of them are rather intelligent and intentionally avoid humans for their own well-being. Some have evolved a 6th sense that allows them to feel when nearby creatures are thinking about them. This helps them avoid human detection very efficiently. A type of big foot was described with such traits. Possibly most surprising is that some cryptids are said to be extraterrestrial in origin. Specifically, el chupacabra was claimed to be a nocturnal extraterrestrial animal that drinks blood to sustain itself and buries itself during the day to hide.

I loved this so much. My mtg OC is a biologist/biophilosopher from Ikoria who trained as a Witherbloom, and this felt very much like something theyd get up too. I disagree with some of your choices for what planes to release them on too... though I suppose they cant all go to Innistrad 😂 I would have considered Ikoria for a few of these, if only because I think the ecosystem could evolve to include them rapidly. For Green I head to the Congo to capture Mokelemembe, and I will set him loose on Ixalan. For Red I seek out the Kongamato, again this pterosaur will be happier on Ixalan. For Blue I track down the Yuki Ona , and I set her loose in the frozen mountains of Kaldhiem. For Black I head I track down Old Shuck, the Black Dog, from Great Britain, and I rehome him to Innistrad. For White I seek to capture the endangered Jackalopes and rehome them on Eldraine.

On a lighter note, some perhaps less obvious potential cryptid candidates might be John Henry, Pecos Bill, or Paul Bunyan.

Mothman would probably make for a good White/Blue cryptid. White & Blue because of the flight obviously, but ESPECIALLY blue due to it's arrival presaging the collapse of the Silver Bridge in the area which occurred shortly after the Mothman sightings. Interestingly a similar winged entity appeared near the Chernobyl nuclear powerplant before it's infamous meltdown in in April of 1986, workers at the plant called the mysterious creature the "Black Bird of Chernobyl." As far as where to put Mothman, I'm thinking the darkened world of Shadowmoore would be a good home for it, where it's dark warnings would have PLENTY of opportunity to warn about things. Another cryptid I can see as being two colored is the monster spawned from the internet that has managed to spawn a REAL killing; Slenderman. Slenderman was actually born of a 2009 Photoshop contest on the Something Awful website, so it's story of it going back into the past is fairly fictional, as we live in the postmodern era it has a number of details that can be tied to older myths. For example the faceless Japanese Noppera-bō could have been an inspiration, after all, that's just a terrifying image; a person without a face. Also a THING that kidnaps children is a common folktale staple to warn kids not to wander by making up a boogie man instead of having them fear any regular human (who might be a REAL monster.) Thus he's Blue being born of imagination. The Black portion of his color identity comes from the murder of a 12 year old girl by two of her friends as a sacrifice to Slenderman in 2014, thus making this fictional nightmare a REAL nightmare for one girl & her family. Such a terror that is a Boogieman that historically attacks children, would be just another horror to stalk the night on Innistrad, however I can also see him on multiple planes if Ashiok heard about him, I'm sure that they'd be companions.

I'm from jersey so I had hoped, glad to see the devil make the list. Everyone in south jersey knows of him, and in the north the hockey team keeps his presence felt. All I'll say is them pine barrens are super freaky at night

Id have loved to see yhe knuckelavee for black. An undead centaur-esque monster that raises the dead wherever it goes!

With Kaldheim being based on the lands of Norse mythology its sea would be the equivalent to our artic sea. The Ningen however was only spotted in the antarctic ocean so Kaldheim is an unlikely place for it to be found.

Honestly there already is many cryptids translated into Magic. The Yeti in Red, The Chupacabra in Black, any Kraken in Blue, etc...

I have to say putting the Mongolian death worm in white is an odd choice. Considering it's violent and primal nature and desires. Surely it'd be more home in red or green if not a combernation of those two.

My only request, I think, would have been to have a bit more text on some of the cards. I would love to print them out and use them as monocolored commanders

this was well put together, but i was sad to see the Jersey Devil card. up to that point they had been pretty well balanced and simple (i do like the morph theme), but he's got a few issues. "much" should be "many", "loose" should be "lose", and it's probably too strong for its costs especially with flying. i'd think a 3/4 or 4/3 would be better, perhaps with an activated ability to gain flying until end of turn (which would make it harder to use on a turn when it morphed), or maybe smaller but with an activated ability to increase its power which would make working toward the curse counters more interesting and more powerful later in the game.

How about the Slide Rock Bolter as a red green creature with mountainwalker?

I wanna preface this by saying that I enjoyed the video. Cool concept, fun script, music gives a nice atmosphere, great stuff. That said, those are some bulk rares if I ever saw them. Like, the Jersey Devil might have what it takes to see play, but considering it's ability basically boils down to slightly worse Infect it's kinda meh. But at least it got an ability considering it's hanging out with a mana dork, a vanilla monster, and two dudes with keywords on opposite ends of the conditional evasion spectrum. I mean, if you're going to make them cards, why not make them cards you'd actually want to play? With cool and evocative abilities instead of Morph, which reminds me, why do they all have Morph? Is it because they're cryprids, and the flavor is that they're hiding on the table? There could be someone there if they weren't also terrible at being contemporary Morph creatures. Maybe if they were printed in Onslaught they'd get by, but after this much power creep if a Morph creature doesn't do something when it turns face up then it better have some fancy stats to make them worth turning face up as a combat trick, because otherwise why would you ever Morph them? Now I'll admit there is a degree to which the standard of a Morph card is dependent on whatever other Morph cards they're printed with as the best of those are whom they are presumably impersonating, however given that these creatures exist in a vacuum there is nothing to be done there, but I just don't see a scenario where them having Morph is actually relevant.

It was the dead of night in point pleasent, West Verginia, i had come across a mothman: Human in form but immense strength and wings. It stood where disaster struck. It would be safe to say this creature was green and blue with its almost divining ability to be where disaster was near. I tried to capture so it may be safer on another plane, but it senses my pressence and fled. While i'm a ranger and a decent tracker, its difficult to determin its movements. Anyone here a mage skilled in detainment spells? I was thinking of bringing it to Ikoria where many such hybrids exist.

Jersey Devil in my opinion would be Green/Black. The Pine Barrens are an earie ecosystem, preternaturally quiet and typified by dark pine forests and dense bogs and swamps of sandy soil and wild blueberries. Its a quiet place, full of strange and unsettling beauty and delicious forage. The Devil stays almost exclusively close to the barrens and dark corners of the wilderness, only attacking livestock at the edge of civlization, and only seen flitting through the tree tops of the pines. One could argue it is a creature of the dark and pagan corners of the wild places, unsuited for the practices of the dutch, quakers, and puritans that settled the lands, and too wary to engage in the strange sights and sounds of civilization, it guards its dark corners of the Barren, left to these peaceful treelines for the pure fact that the land was never viewed as anything worth cultivating by the settlers, its grey acidic sands too poor for crops that aren't small berries (hence why the blueberry was first domesticated here) and unsuited for housing and development or any industry that's not basic logging of the pines.

A cryptic from my home state is the hodag, a beast that is a strange mashup of several animals. The colors it would be is either black or green

I believe that Ningen is pronounced "neen-gen" with a G sound and not a J. It is Japanese for "person" or "human" etc.

Not much of a stretch to get stuff like that in. Yetis, Krakens, Wendigos (Wiitigos) and Chupacabras are already official cards.

Given that the Multiverse already has its own interpretations of gods, deities, and whatever the fuck Tom Bombadil ACTUALLY is from across myriad pantheons of THIS world's historical mythologies, I would very much enjoy seeing you produce a similar video to this and previous color pie sortings that tries to find where on the color pie your professional expertise would place the likes of Webspinner Mephala, Lord of The Hunt Hircine, Mad Monarch of The Shivering Isles Sheogorath, and indeed all of the gods-adjacent in the fascinating family of Princes among the Daedra spoken of in the all but indecipherable thaumaturgical texts known as The Elder Scrolls. Just remember that if you wish to avoid a fate worse than death, under no circumstances and regardless of how deafening they may become should you pay heed to any whispers that you begin to suddenly hear from inside your own mind, for the Seer of Secrets Hermaeus Mora never fails to tempt seekers of the unknown such as yourself. Such intense and insatiable curiosity is an unmatched delicacy to the appetite of any ravenous gnostivore, let alone that of their apex. Whether or not these efforts should prove successful shall be dependent entirely on you, intrepid traveler.

I would not call 2002 early internet, as the internet was invented by the military and academia in the 1960's and the world wide web came to the public in the early 90's. Also, the 80's film "War Games" was about an early civilian hacker gaining access to the military networks...and hilarity ensues.

I usually love your videos, especially those whose bridge our real world (or it's legends) and Magic and it's color pie, but here I was a bit disappointed :/ Perhaps I was expecting a deeper analysis of the color of some cryptid, perhaps some (more complicated) custom cards (why morph tho ?) and a larger selection of creatures (and perhaps not only mono colored ones). It's still a great video that I enjoyed, and I recognize the work you put into it, but I kinda don't see the utility of MtG and the color pie in it :/ But thanks anyway, and keep up the great work !
