HORROR IN THE OZARKS - The Sad Tale of Ella Barham, 1912 at Davidson Cemetery in Olvey, Arkansas.

When you mentioned how she was killed reminded me of the Black Dahlia. She suffered a grisly murder as well. A man whose name escapes me wrote a book about her murder and he believes his own father was the murderer. Hope you made it home safe before the storms. Thank Ron

Very sad. Nicely done tribute to her. I have swam many times in Crooked Creek as a kid in the 1950's and 60's. My parents owned some land close to where Greasy Creek and Crooked Creek come together ( just outside Yellville). May Miss Ella rest in eternal and graceful peace.

Prisons and Jails are over populated and real justice isn't being served. Once let back out the same people go back to same terrible life. I think crime rates would come down a lot more. Thanks for telling us Ella's story, Ron. I've never heard of her before and she should be remembered. I found it sad that she is buried just metres from where her life was taken...it's kind of disturbing. And I do hope that Otis was guilty - and not a victim of haste himself, which would also mean that justice wasn't served and the real killer would have gone free..I just hope they caught the right man.

The fact that the footprints didn't match Odus' makes me question if they had the right guy.

What a tragic ending to a young woman's life. Poor Miss Ella, I hope her death was swift so she didn't suffer greatly. It was strange for me to hear of something so gruesome from that far back. My Grandparents weren't born when this happened. Before hearing this story, I honestly would not have thought of a dismembered body. I now realize that true evil existed since the beginning of time. It just makes me sick to think that way. The backdrop is gorgeous, until you think of what happened there. Thank you so much Ron for telling Ella's story and giving us the name of the book. Hi Ron 🙋‍♀️. Ella's headstone is very visibly inscribed. I could see her name when your camera was way back. It was shocking what happened to Ella. Very sad and she was very young 😢.

Tragic story and very well told! That quote on the convicted man's inscription, "misrepresentations, born of excitement" talk about dramatic! Makes you wonder, was he really the killer, do you think? The drone over the creek and ravine, very cool, but creepy too. Poor Ella, she will not be forgotten. I hope it was a quick end. Amazing job Ron, thank you for bringing us there.

Can you imagine if that young man was in deed innocent and was wrongfully convicted? How horrible for his family to lose him in a hanging and then to be run-out-of-town while they are still mourning his death. I mean, even if he was guilty, he could have just been a bad seed. The parents and other siblings aren't guilty. What a tragedy.

Next time you come through the Ozarks, you might like to hear the story and see the mass grave of the people killed in the West Plains dance hall explosion of 1928. The cause of the explosion is still a mystery. Lin Waterhouse wrote a very thoroughly researched book about it.

There has to be bad energy on that land where she was so violently murdered. Thanks for another great story.

Well, dang, you're only about an hour from me. Have you ever heard of Enon, Ark? It is one of the towns buried back about 1957 when they damned the river and created Table Rock Lake. Enon cemetery is still left on the hill above where the town was below... Waaay back in to get there by road, but easy by boat and we can see the trees (cemetery hidden by them) from our home. Thanks for the story, may have to try and get down that way to visit it. Sad story indeed.

Makes me wonder if his family was wealthy, and he had the young ladies all wanting to be with him, and when Ella turned him away....he couldn't handle that so he just murdered her. In my humble opinion...someone knew Ella and her path that night to quickly access her. Perhaps she had a secret meeting planned with these two or her murderer? The murderer had to have had some kind of jealousy maybe longstanding against her...but I believe it was these two boys looking for trouble as one of the gf's explained the murderers state of mind earlier for her 'rejecting' him. A marriage proposal which the murderer might have used that line as a con job for sex.

Poor Ella. The crowd was right to be so angry but I wonder whether they got the right guys.

Lillian is my daughter's name. Named after her grandma that passed away exactly one month before she born. Grandma passed away Sept 17, 1996 and then Lillian was born October 17, 1996!

She was wanting to make a hat. That struck me deeply. She was simply enjoying her time to do a project, of everyday living ,when evil struck. How precious each and every day is to us. How dark the emotions of anger, hatred and un-forgiveness can bring upon a human soul. Thank you for reminding us of how not to walk.

What a sad case. It was definitely horror, what was done to Ella Barham. May she Rest In Peace. Ella Barham’s murder and what immediately followed reminds me of a murder here in Oregon that I first heard of when my grandfather wrote a short story about it. It happened in Bandon, Oregon in 1919. The girl, Lillian Leuthold, was only 16, just a couple of years younger than Ella Barham had been. It was during the summer, and Lillian had been visiting a friend whose father was a local pastor. When she didn’t return home that evening, her mother assumed she was staying the night at the friend’s house. When Lillian still hadn’t come home early the following afternoon, she called the house of the friend, whose mother told her Lillian had left for home sometime just after 5 p.m. the evening before. So, Lillian’s mother sent her younger son, about 14 at the time, over to the local mill where Lillian’s father worked to tell him to come home as Lillian was missing. On his way home, Lillian’s father met the mother of Lillian’s friend, who had just left her own house to go to the Leuthold house. They were the ones who found the roses Lillian had picked to take home to her mother scattered on a back road-right by disturbed brush along the road. They found that Lillian had been shot twice in the head-from a distance-and her body dragged back into the brush and under a fallen log. Her hat had a bullet hole in it, probably the first shot, and her dress was very torn, which initially made investigators think she might have been assaulted. No evidence of that, but she’d clearly been dragged, and the friend’s mother, whose rose garden Lillian had picked the roses from, said Lillian had gotten stuck in the briars and had needed some help disentangling herself. Eventually, another boy, who was living with his grandmother in the area, aged only 14 or 15, was arrested and tried for the murder. My own great grandmother AND great great grandmother (both born in Arkansas, coincidentally) attended the trials. I say “trials” because that kid was tried, I think, FOUR times for the murder of Lillian Leuthold. The fourth trial resulted in a Not Guilty verdict. This is where Ella Barham’s case really reminds me of Lillian Leuthold’s. As I understand it, the Leuthold murder also got quite a bit of media attention. When that boy was acquitted, there was so much outrage, including from the victim’s family, that authorities had to sneak the boy out of the county jail in the middle of the night and whisk him off to another city (Portland, I think) before a lynch mob got hold of him. That’s the part that really stood out about the trials of both of these guys, only one was found guilty and the other was not. The sad part is, Lillian Leuthold never got justice for her murder. Many people even today do not believe that boy killed Lillian Leuthold. After just over a century, I doubt her killer will ever be known, but they will certainly never be prosecuted for it.

An person or persons that dismember an body are absolutely positively sick. They have to be mentally ill! How can anyone dismember an body it's absolutely sicking and disgusting!
