Horse rearing and flipping over.

This is my now 5 year old mare, who as you can see likes to throw tantrums by throwing herself on the ground in a very dramatic way. The first time we put the long reins on her we were at it for 1 1/2 hours but she just kept doing what you see in the video she even went so far as refusing to get up off the ground, just laying there in protest!! This was her 3rd lesson!

with every video of a flipper I've seen , it seems to be a reaction to the bit and a pain response. You can see it right before the flip a pull on the left rein and the horse starts shaking its head open mouth and over it goes. It can run, it's the horses only escape. A horse can have pain with a halter or bitless too if it's teeth aren't cared for and are cutting it's gums. Forcing it to do this over and over is abuse imho. And I've seen the comments about how the horse teeth are fin vet check etc. Doesn't mean their isn't scar tissue and they aren't in pain. As someone with invisable chronic pain, I know. Listen and trust what your horse is telling you.

Hi, like I said she was and is physically in perfect health, no excuse but as we got to know and understand each other better she is a highly sensitive mare I have worked with horses in 4 different countries and since I was a kid a good 30 years of experience and I have never come across a mare like her. I moved her to a new stable and she is a completely different horse!! She did not like the man and being in his stable she hated it and just kept escalating, to this point. I was fooled into letting him work with her but after that video he never worked with her again. I brought her from a dealer at 2 years old and he had beat the shit out of her repeatedly when I got her the first few months were spent nursing her back to health. I broke her and trained her myself. After this video we had 4 years of amazing riding and adventures and last year she had her first foal you can see the other videos of him. And he is amazing, I am now starting to work with her again. She is my girl no matter how difficult and fucked up she is!! Which she is!!

When we first tried to long rein her she did that flip almost every 2 minutes or so she wanted nothing to do with it. The first lesson went on for 1 1/2 hours just to get her to walk and accept the bit for 5 minutes! But after that she had 2 more lessons where she still flipped herself!
@minihorselover001
@minihorselover001 10 лет назад
Have you considered trying bitless? If it took her that long to 'accept' a bit then maybe the entire problem is the bit. If not the bit then I would have a chiropractor out, she may be feeling pain somewhere and reacting to it, she seems very stiff. The things a good chiropractor can do for a horse is amazing!

That horse is frustrated and confused. Try having someone lead her round or some sort of direction. This is new to the horse and she’s confused she’s learnt when she flips over she gets release. U can over come this by leading another horse in front or letting her follow someone for better direction. Then gradually she’ll learn but looks to me like she’s been rushed into it gotten frustrated because she carnt walk back or forwards without being tugged on. And just flipped and guess what! It’s give her release of pressure.

Aura at this time was broke and riding no problem, she is a super sensitive mare and the man working with her set her off like dynamite. For some reason she did not like him at all and would flip herself whenever he was near. I stopped letting him near her, she was calmer but still very nervous. So I moved her out of that yard and took her home with me where we had no more issues and then I rode her about 18 kilometers to a new stable in the mountains, run by a lovely dutch lady and her family. She settled there, they treat her with love and gentle and she is back to her amazing self before I took her to that stable. She has triggers for that behavior that stem from when the dealer had her and beat her she will panic and freak out if you try and restrain her head in any way side reins, draw reins anything like that. I can ask her to collect and she will because I asked. She still is slightly claustrophobic, she is nervous in arenas and will not settle in them and will become dangerous if push. Like I said she is a super sensitive mare, but take her out in open country or on a hack she is the bravest, and there is nothing she wont do!! Try and explain that!! She is a high maintenance mare who is super sensitive calm and quiet the whole time and she will do whatever you want, the second you get a little angry she panics and freaks out. She has gave birth to a beautiful palomino colt foal in April she is an amazing mother and I am looking forward to working with her as soon as the colt is weaned. I have never come across a horse like her, I can rider her bare back in a halter out in the fields or hacking on the road and she will never put a foot wrong, take her into the arena and watch out!! So your assessment is completely wrong as are a lot of people's who see this video. thank you.

We had a horse at the barn that did this. Didn't wanna ground drive she'd flip, didn't wanna stand in cross ties she'd flip. This horse would literally THROW herself on the ground for just about anything. Horses that do not have self preservation are horses that cannot ever be people horses. She ended up getting taken to the sale as far as I know. This may sound harsh as hell, but she should have been put on the truck. She was going to kill someone and they wanted this mare as a kids horse.

Geni N TheAmigos so the negative votes are people who don't understand they are trying to fix "abnormal" behavior? Though defined as in animal science as a beast of burden kind of way? Or is it one of the conditions where the animals quality life is poor because of its condition, and you either fix it or euthanize? Like when cats have the disorder where they think their skin is attacking them.
@Shewolfen
@Shewolfen 5 лет назад
That is self preservation, the mystery to solve is getting down to why this behavior was adapted as a defense mechanism to some perceived fear or pain either current or past. A horses first instinct is to run. if it can't run but needs escape , the only way left to go is up and down. I think training where the horse is given a choice to participate and rewards and positive reinforcement instead of restraint and punishment is the way to go. Well with all animals and everyone realy.

She had sore shoulders but a week on box rest and light in hand walking, and some anti inflammatories. She was fine, that was the last time the man worked with her. I toke off the long reins and toke her out of the arena and hacked her out she loved it she was much more relaxed. Even to this day if I take her into an arena she freaks out and had panic attacks. Where as hacking or cross country she is brave, forward and nothing fazes her. Good luck with your guy, be careful they can quickly become their own worst enemy.

I would say that the above behavior was my fault I should never have let this man near her he was like a match to her dinomite, she is super sensitive and the smallest bit of pressure and she panics. So she has all these bad memories in the arena. She is a very unique horse I have been riding and working with horses for nearly 30 years and I have never meet a horse like her!! But on the ground and riding outside the arena she is amazing, beautiful and gentle, she is a head scratcher!! This is unacceptable! A horse is flipping or kicking or anything because they are in pain! Any type of cut or limping or anything should result in concern, this horse was wide-eyed, bloody mouthed and sweaty, she was obviously nervous and in pain! If this was her third lesson, her back was probably sore! And rating a horse's flip? Come on people! My first horse flipped when he was younger (before I got him) and broke his withers! He almost didn't make it, but remarkably he did, but his strides were always different. A flip can injure both the horse and rider. You should always have a horse checked out, even if it is as small as a bloody tongue. Please people, knock some sense into your brains.

Thank you for your educational rant, this mare was and has been seen to by the dentist, osteopath and a chiropractor there was nothing wrong with her and no reason for her behaviour I am an experienced horse person and have never in my life come across a horse like her. I have worked with horses in 4 different countries and in different disciplines. I still have this mare she never did this with me, she is super sensitive even if I think a bad thought she can feel and gets upset. But 3 years ago I took her from that stable, the man who is handling her in the video was like petrol to her fire they clashed in a very bad way as you can see. This mare is amazing on the ground and so brave and surprisingly safe riding anywhere but in an arena!! In the new stable she has settled down so very much, and is the pet of the yard and is due her first foal this April. I am hope this will calm her down and center her, fingers crossed. But thanks for your concern.

It is sad that some people mistreat their horses. Worse, they ruin them for the next owner. When I think about abuse I always think of an example that Monty Roberts gave in his autobiography about how a broken horse only does what is eneded to avoid punishment, but one who is taught and who decides to obey and follow you will try hard throughout his life. They have brains and those with heart will give everything for a horsemen they respect and regard as the heard leader rather that a tyrant to fear.

Hi Riley, yes her mouth is bloody but that is because when I recorded this it was the end of the lesson and the whole hour before this is full of her flipping and throwing herself on the ground and each time she would pull the bit through her mouth and cut it. Her teeth have been done, and there was no excuse for her behavior. That was the last time that she threw herself over though. Now we are up and riding taking things slow and going well enough she is a very difficult and stubborn mare.
@richardkane8367
@richardkane8367 6 лет назад
Then you should have stopped the "lesson" the first time she cut her mouth open. Continuing to work with an injured horse is not only abusive, but entirely counter productive. Horses react this way not because they're having "tantrums" but because the rider/trainer is doing something wrong and the horse is reacting to the pain, fear, or discomfort.
@haleylahaie3740
@haleylahaie3740 5 лет назад
@@richardkane8367 for real. Horses can throw "tantrums" but unless its taught behaviour that escalated its never this severe. If my gelding throws a "tantrum"(he has seperation anxiety that im working on him with and will do this when I won't let him face other horses while asking him to move away) he'll throw his head and do this little hop and then stop and do what's being asked of him. Anything more than a hop, because he has certainly thrown me for doing stupid things, tells me he's terrified or in pain. I don't understand people blaming their horse for screaming out that they don't like something for various reasons.

Hi Zane, my mare has a trigger for this behavior, whenever you restrict her head carriage in any way she panics and flips she is also slightly claustrophobic and sometimes panics in confined spaces such as the arena. She flipped once with me on her but that was my fault. She is a super sensitive mare if I frown at her she starts worrying. I bought her from a dealer at 2 years old but she was already pretty messed up by then so a lot of her behavior problems come from. In regards to what I did I took her out of the arena and on hacks, cross country and she was amazing!! Nothing scared her!! She was amazing went everywhere did everything I later found out that she had a back injury which broke my heart but she has just had her first foal the most beautiful palomino colt. He is 5 months old now and both of them are going amazing. I will put up a video of them. So my advice would be to thing out of the box. Find your boys trigger and take him away do something else, there are so many different thing that you can do together with your horse. Try something new and as your trust and bond grow go back to your problem with time it gets better. I hope this helps you and your boy good luck.

@rachaelaura811
@rachaelaura811 5 лет назад
Hi Naomi, I don't mind but I would like to give a little history so you can understand. At this time Aura was broke and riding, and had jumped out of numerous fields over big fences. This guy cond me into thinking he was a great show jumper, and that for her to jump right she had to go in the proper position. I didn't let him work with her again after this. I got her as a 2 year old from a dealer who beat her when I got her you could not touch her or get near her she had deep cuts and an infected abscess on her back leg. So it took a long time to get her here and he wrecked that. Now she is amazing and brave and quiet and I can do most thing with her accept ride her in an arena or put anything on her that constricts her head. For hacking or hunting or anything outside she is amazing and will do anything that is asked of her. I think due to her trauma she could be claustrophobic. She is also highly sensitive, so much so I could not ride her in a bad mood, it would freak her out and she would panic but I think that has to do with our super strong bond. I hope this helps, she is not a phyco horse just misunderstood, and now that we understand each other we are great.

This was the last time that the man worked with her, I toke her out of that yard and into a smaller private yard and she never did it again. But it is very difficult to ride her in an arena and time she is in one she panics and becomes very dangerous in complete contrast with her behavior outside I can take her any where and do anything with her as long as it is not in an arena! I have worked and trained horses most of my life and I have never meet a horse like her, on the ground my kids can lead her around and do anything they like with her but mount her and take her into an arena and she is a completely different horse.
