In this video I had an opportunity to visit Horween Leather Co in Chicago, Illinois while I just happend to be in town for business. Horween is the supplier for the Shell Cordovan for Allen Edmonds shoes. As a matter of fact, the soles of their Shell Cordovan shoes actually have the "Genuine Horween Shell Cordovan" stamp on them:
www.allenedmonds.com/dw/image...
I took an impromtu tour, and show you some of the finer points of calfskin and shell cordovan leather production. I would like to give special thanks to John Lunny of Tannery Row (a division of Horween) for being so gracious as to give me a partial tour unannounced! Here is a link to Horween's website:

Hi Robert, I just watched this video for the second time. It’s amazingly informative as I believe I’ve mentioned previously. I’m baffled as to why this video only has around 1700 views. Anyway, from my perspective, keep up the good work! I’m learning a lot about shoes, the shoe industry, etc. from your excellent productions. Thanks again.

Robert this is a great video. I am a bit surprised that your tour guide did not mention that Horween does not stretch the leather in the various drying phases. A lot of producers stretch the leather tight during the drying phase. Horween will actually let it dry without pulling the leather tight. You loose at least 2 feet of leather when you dry this way. Another reason that Horween Leather is more expensive but the leather conforms to the foot better and lasts quite a bit longer also.

Thank you for doing this video. So the membrane that is “shell cordovan” is the opposite side of the “top grain” in a very specific portion of the hindquarter of a horse. This underside membrane then becomes the outside top or visible surface when making shoes. Finally it makes sense!

Amazing dedication and presentation. You share more quality info than the majority of other sources absolutely. Thanks and hope you had a good trip! From Chicagoland myself. Miss the city very much. Hope you had time to try some pizza as well (both deep and tavern-style thin crust, latter well-known by locals)

Horween does make very good products. However, the video appeared to be a commercial for Horween. There are many other companies that produce excellent products at lower prices.

I get where you're coming from, and I AM biased because Horween is a big supplier to Allen Edmonds (my fav shoe brand), and because I'm friends with Phill Kalas, owner of Ashland Leather Company, that uses only Horween for his Shell products. I was not paid or anything like that by Horween. As I said in the video, it really was just a thing of happenstance that I was in the area and able to do this. I cannot comment on other tanneries simply because I don't know anything about them! I hope you still got some value out of the video. And maybe Horween should cut me into their profits? LOL.

What's the difference or is there a difference between Genuine Horween leather and Chromexcel leather?
@CobblerBob
@CobblerBob 5 лет назад
Serjio Dufour - “Chromexcel” is a product name of a specific kind of leather that Horween makes (it’s their own name). So all Chromexcel leather is also Genuine Horween leather (unless it’s counterfeit), but all Horween leather is not Chromexcel. There are several ways to tan leather. Tanning is the process of taking an animal hide, and turning into leather through a series of chemical processes. One major way to tan leather is chrome tanning, using chromium salts, and another major is vegetable tanning. Then there are other ways I’m not familiar with, and hybrid processes. Each way of tanning produces a different product, and produces leather with very different physical properties. www.horween.com/blog/2010/03/23/chromexcel®-2 Also, if you REALLY want to learn more, makes sure you watch the 3 part series I posted called “Leather Talk with Phil from Horween/Ashland Leather”. @@CobblerBob thanks I will check it out because I was wondering why they would say one shoe is made of chromexcel while the other is genuine horween leather and both are sold by the same company.

Robert, it was fun to sense your excitement in producing this video. I live in a Chicago suburb and have thought of touring Horween, Oak Street Bootmakers (Office), and the company that makes Venetian Leather Cream, all headquartered in Chicago. I’m wondering if, based on your experience, if you would recommend someone as myself with an interest in the production of shoes, touring the Horween facility? Let me know your thoughts, okay? Thanks
@CobblerBob

Ed F absolutely! I would recommend 2 tho gs: 1. look up as much stuff about leather and leather tanning before going 2. Pre-arrange a tour, don’t show up unannounced!

Does calf leather come from a calf or is it just a type of leather?
@CobblerBob
@CobblerBob 2 года назад
Yes, it comes from young cows, but they are not slaughtered for the hydes. It's a byproduct of the food industry. A cow that's a little older will yield what's called Kipskin. You'll see this in belts among other things.

I've watched many youtube videos about shell, still can't fully understand the particular anatomic part shell is being made of. People saying it's some kind of membrane which should be subcutaneous or muscular fascia/aponeurosis, but I doubt it can be as thick. So according to you it's just processed reversed skin? Thank you for your videos! Would like to see more in depth shell manufacturing process.
@CobblerBob
@CobblerBob 5 лет назад
I’m not an expert on animal anatomy, but from my understanding it’s a membrane which resides on the backside of the skin. I think this video will help, I interview Phil Kalas, who is an employee of Horween Leather, and he also owns a leather goods business called Ashland leather company. We discussed shell Cordovan in detail: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-lm2NcSuxIoY.html

Great video except for the sucky music at the end. I hope you fix the volume of any music you use, in general, so your voice isn't buried in comparison. :) I have a pair of longwing Allen Edmonds in dark chocolate, full brogue coming. Hope you do a video on deciphering the codes on the lining of AE shoes.
@CobblerBob
@CobblerBob 5 лет назад
SPNKr sorry about that, honestly mixing the music sound is fairly difficult. Generally with all my videos I’ve got the volume adjusted all the way up on the video editing software, and to get the audio any clearer or louder, I’d probably have to start buying better equipment which just isn’t in the cards right now. Another factor is I’m often editing these videos very late at night, like midnight/1 AM and I’m probably keeping the PC speakers down low so I don’t wake up the family, which makes it harder to hear the difference in sound. I’ll keep trying to improve though, you have my word!
@SPNKr16
@SPNKr16 5 лет назад
@@CobblerBob I would suggest a pair of headphones, the over ear type, and most free editing software should give you free reign on audio editing too. Mixing on low monitor (external speaker) volume is a pain (my channel has a lot of remixed music) so trying headphones is a start and maybe look up guides/walkthroughs for your editing software. Hope you do more AE videos.

Robert Powers - I appreciate your content. It's fine to take constructive criticism but don't apologize if the quality was the best you could do at the moment. Criticism w/o specific guidance is worthless. If I had any experience w/ editing / mixing or guides & walk throughs, I'd reach out to you and provide title, link, or some tangible point of reference if I thought it would help. Like all skills and hobbies, you get better and more knowledge as you go. Thank you for sharing your interests and enthusiasm🙏
