My son passed away a few months ago in the Arthur Rank Charity hospital. He had very aggressive cancer which destroyed and took him from us in a short seven week period. He was so brave, and managed to marry his sweetheart in that time as well as make provision for their little two year old. I can’t fault the tender care that ALL the staff there gave him, as well as support for us ,his family. They said it was a privilege to nurse him, and he became quickly attached to his nurses . I thank ALL hospice carers all over, as it isn’t a job for just anyone , but from the bottom of my heart, I’m so glad my son passed on from there so peacefully and pain free. He was so brave all through his ordeal which paralysed him at the end bless him.

My dear friend I am so sorry for the loss of your son You will see your son again There is no such thing as death Why do I know this Because I am A near death experience He would have gone into that beautiful world There would have been lab ones waiting for him That beautiful white light we all see and the tunnel You will know what I am on about one day when it is your time to pass this world into the next world

I really admire the work these people do. Making the end of someone's life as comfortable and painless as possible is probably one of the kindest things a human can do. We shouldn't take this for granted and we should compensate these people very well.

I have severe COPD & just released from hospital 2 was ago. The Drs suggested I get in touch with hospice, and I did speak to someone about it before I left hospital. I am shocked and saddened that I am preparing to die. I don’t want to die as I have too much to live for! Well, I told my Dr that I am not ready. I continued with my plans to go to our house in Florida with my husband & will take one day at a time. So far I feel ok and taking my meds. I will continue my life as usual & when I feel that death is beckoning me I will seek hospice. Copd is final. I am 75 & just have my husband. My son, an only child passed away 4 years ago. My dear friends either passed or moved. In a way I wish the Dr. didn’t tell me about the short time I have left. I know it’s true, but I still can’t believe it. I understand that hospice will give me wonderful care. Yet, I want to live!

Ella, Im so sorry for the loss of your friend. I can tell that you loved her very much, and im betting that she knew that too. How lucky you both were to find a friendship that meant so much to you both. It's still so new for you, but as time moves on, it will get a bit better. She would never want you to continue hurting, but instead she would encourage you to find new friends, or to reach out to others. I hurt so bad when my Dad died, and years before that when my Mom died. I had to have something that would help me get through.....but i didn't know exactly what it was i was needing. With Mom, i was only 17,and with my Dad, i was 50ish....and you know, it didn't matter at all the age...because in my heart....i was still just their daughter...age does not help make the pain less, it hurts all the same. So....when i was 17 and Mom passed, after awhile, i did recognize i was not doing so well. I had to find someway....something to get me through the next day. I was lucky i guess, because it was Summer. It was May. The flowers were in bloom, and mostly, the sun was out almost all the time. That was it...that was what was going to help me, till tomorrow. This big emptiness, was going to be filled my way, and your way will be what you choose. Id close my eyes, and stand in the middle of my mom lilac's bed, or her roses, it changed from day to day, and id just breathe her in. Like she was the fragrance of the flower, and the warm sun shining on my head worked its own magic. I don't know why, but the sun helped,....it all helped. Im sorry this is so long. Talk to Lu Ella. Honestly, she wouldn't mind at all. She will be happy to hear from you. Take care.

Hi Ella, I’m so very sorry for your loss of your friend. I am an ex hospice nurse here in New Zealand, I worked at a hospice for five years, absolutely loved it. It was a real privilege to care for the terminally ill and dying person, was it depressing ? I would have to say that I found the hospice to be a very serene, calm and tranquil place, where we did our best to just help the patients to make the most of whatever time they had left. People still laughed and joked. It certainly wasn’t morbid. Yes, it could be very sad at times, I won’t deny that, but each one of us is going to die one day, none of us are guaranteed to live a certain number of years, and I know if I was ever terminally ill, I would certainly trust my former colleagues to care for me until the end. Hospice really are the expert in this field, which is very specialised. Once again, I’m so very sorry for your loss 💕

I seriously think it's about fucking time that the western world had a talk about assisted suicide and euthanasia. I think people should have the option to die with dignity in their homes when they choose to do so. I know I would want that option. It's pretty brutal that there aren't any peaceful ways to end your life in most western countries.

I was a Hospice volunteer for 2 years after I myself came out of a 16 day coma in 2012. When I had respiratory failure, my family was told there was nothing else they could do. But the Heavenly Lord had other plans for me. When I became a Hospice volunteer I never imagined how tough but yet so rewarding it would be to sit next to someone that was in the process of dying. There's people that have noone to be with them when they die and that's so heart breaking. I had a patient that his family refused to be with him when they were told ge was dying. At 1st I couldn't understand how someone could be so cold blooded and refuse something like this. But then I realized it wasn't my job to criticized noone and that God had assigned me to be there for this patient. When patient took his last breath, I cried uncontrollably and hugged him Oh so hard. The last hug I gave him I'm 100% sure he felt because his body started relaxing and his face had the most peaceful expression I will never forget.

My aunt passed away at the beginning of the year in her late 40’s of lung cancer, and my grandma passed away three months ago of a stroke (I did not visit her at hospice but I saw her at a viewing, which changed me a lot emotionally) and visiting her in hospice gave me a whole new view of death and it also taught me how to confront it in a more mature way. Weeks after both incidents, I would be terrified to watch videos like this since they gave me die hard anxiety, but now I’m learning to explore the topic of death and teaching myself to be less scared. I work in a nursing home. At age 17, i’m a CNA and I love my job. The hardest part of this job is watching residents who you’ve grown to love, to be friends with, almost like family, deteriorate. Three residents have passed so far, and i’ve only worked as a CNA March-present (July as of right now). The last one, her name was Judith. Weeks before, she was able to do everything by herself. She would walk around, and sit by the nurses station. She never talked, but I remember her asking me to sit with her. She said it in this small voice, and I told her that the second I am done with this, I will. But then we had an altercation and a fall. I forgot about it. She went to bed. Then, her cancer spread. She became bed-bound, and she never talked. I’d always go in and change her, make sure she atleast drank something. One day I realized her body was cleaning out, preparing to die. Every day, id still sit by her bed. Hold her hand, and when she thought she was somewhere else, I went with it. She believed me. I’d been doing a routine with her, and the last night, I chatted with her and told her goodnight. That I loved her and to be good. She said she will try, and goodnight. Judith passed away shortly after my shift was over at 11. Listen to your residents. Treat them with love. She had family, but no one came to see her. You need to be the rock for these people, the stability they need to pass on. Update: It is now September. 6 have passed, and another is on her death bed. It’s sad, I understand that. But these people are dying. Imagine how you’d feel if your family made you live in a place you do not recognize, a place that definitely does not feel like a home. For many, their family is now the CNA’s, PCA’s, and Nurses that work day in and day out. We have a family to come home to at the end of the work day. They don’t.

That's so sad that she had family and no one came to see her...my mother passed away at the hospital. She was sick with infection and a dialysis patient and we found she had a foot sore on her heel. So I never really noticed it at home cuz she never let me see her feet. Anyway she went into foot surgery so they could clean that out and,she had a stroke during surgery and passed away peacefully the next day. That was 3 years ago and I mss her like crazy😭😭😭

My dying father never went to hospice care. He went to a nursing home until they lacked the ability to care for him, and then he went to the hospital for his final days. I wish he had gone to hospice. The nursing home people were not very nice to him, and they always forgot his medicine. He was in pain a lot there.

I have worked in plenty of nursing homes in my 32 yrs of being g a nursing assistant until three and a half years ago when a spinal injury made me unable to do my job anymore. Well after working in them and then being stuck in a nursing home for a year and a half to learn to walk again and all I have to say is if anything ever happens to me again and I have to go back into one... I will end my life. I pray that when my time comes The God Lord will take me fast. If not I want to die at home when I know I am loved and comfortable in my last days and hours.

It's about keeping people comfortable and giving them the very best life they could possibly have with what time that is left. What is sadder is people who die in pain and fear. Hospice is about comfort and resources for the physical, mental, and spiritual health of the life-limited person AND their family. It is kind and loving. Death does not have to be traumatic for all involved. Support is the way.

Sometimes it just can't be done that way. Patients may require special care and medications around the clock that cannot be provided reliably at home. There is a whole staff of people in hospice who are specially trained that cannot be substituted even by a loving family.

Honestly I used to think like u, but my MIL brought her husband home to pass away with Hospice present.... after he passed she couldn’t be in the house ever again! She sold it for a loss just to get out and “feeling like she was heading him, smelling him, seeing him... she ended up moving in with us.

@@jscjrmom1075 I never thought of it in that way.. I should have really seeing as my son died at home (four months old and not expected at all) and having to sit in the same room as I found him was too upsetting.. I guess we're all different.. Sometimes it's not possible for other reasons... For example my dad originally the plan was for him to die at home, but ultimately he was too attached to being there and then his health got to where it was impossible for him to stay. I will never forget the phone call from my mom telling me that he was getting moved to our local hospice house... I sped to get there because I feared that he would pass once he was out of the house. My last true conversation with him happened before he was moved. I remember bursting into tears as I hugged him and he was the person consoling me, when it should have been me doing that for him. I'll never forget what he said to me when I told him that I was scared he would die that day and he stoked my face and wiped my tears and told me "don't worry princess, I'm not leaving today" princess was his nickname for me and he was right... He didn't pass that first day... He waited to either see or hear my other sisters and a few family friends, who really are family... I was surprised at how beautiful and peaceful the hospice house was, the home hospice nurses he had at home both came to see him before he passed. He was in hospice care twice, the first time he ended up getting kicked out because he wasn't dying fast enough! But he went on to live almost 8 more years after he was told he had maybe 6 months. I will forever be thankful for the wonderful nurses and folks who helped make his passing peaceful.

Hospice is a wonderful to deal with. I did private care for about eight years and I did not work for hospice, but I worked beside of them for my patients sake. They make a very sad situation a little bit better to deal with plus they can get you counseling after your love one is gone. And sometimes that’s very important to do. I never worked with not one hospice person that wasn’t a special loving caring individual. I always have told people never hesitate for at the end hospice is a great answer to a sad situation. If you’re reading this chances are you have someone sick at home. I pray for the sick daily. I myself had cancer 31 years ago and I thought I was home Scott free of ever having cancer again. Well here I go again but at least if I don’t get better I do know who to turn to.Prayers for the family and the patience and trust me God keeps his hands around you all when times are bad. They’re going to a better place

Hospice used to scare me. It made me think that you were “giving up” and relinquishing your life. I had witnessed my coworker under hospice care and he looked like he had passed days ago. I was so distraught but the smiley nurse told me that he was happy on pain meds. At the time, I felt like they drugged him up good without actually providing care to sustain his life. It made me upset and made me resent hospice. However, I was naive and in major denial that he was dying from cancer. There was nothing left to do. Not too long later, my family and I had to endure my mother dying from cancer. We refused hospice care. It was the same skewed mentality that getting hospice meant giving up the fight. My mother also wasn’t ready to die but she was so miserable. Looking back, her experience dying would’ve been improved had we sought hospice care. She ended up dying in the hospital traumatically and on life support for the 2nd time. She had one challenge after another after another. Her quality of life was severely diminished for close to a year. Sometimes you have to know when it’s better to stop fighting and it does not mean you are giving up. Had we sought hospice, her passing would’ve been more humane. She could’ve passed as comfortable and painless as possible. I do have sadness and regrets but a much better understanding of hospice care.

yellowboxes09 please don't be hard on yourself. Denial is a coping mechanism. No one gave us a manual for what to expect with death from cancer and what it looks like. Your story sounds like mine, with my late sister. She went into ER with intractable leg pain. Her tumor had grown into her hip/groin/leg area. The day before, we were watching TV and cooking. The next day in ER, we had no idea she wasn't going to leave the hospital. They started explaining it to me like she wasn't even in the room, and I asked them to speak with her, not me. It was a nightmare. Wishing you every blessing and praying that the guilt is lifted from you. You are not alone.

Hospice is GREAT👑.I took care of a patient that was dealing with bone, brain and breast cancer .her sister took great care of her.I was and still am careing for these patients. Anyway her sister did not want anything to do with hospice! Because it meant to her that the fight her sister had been fighting is done and cancer had won.I SPOKE TO THE PATIENT AND TOLD HER THAT SHE WASN'T GIVING UP AND HOW IF GOD CALLED HER HOME EARLY WOULDN'T SHE WANT TO BE IN A PEACEFUL PLACE WERE YOUR FAMILY IS ALSO TAKEN CARE OF.AND SHE'S NOT. GIVING UP AND THIS PLACE WOULD RESPECTIVELY FOLLOW AND NOT CHANGE HOW IF IT OCCURS HER DEATH WOULD BE HOW SHE WANTS IT.SHE CAN HAVE THAT FINAL SAY.inside of death is beautiful. My patient died with grace. THANKS HOSPICE .

What is the burnout rate for these care givers? Do they have safety net counselling sessions/ debriefings regularly? The title is a bit slanted. These should be professional people and given such respect. You have highlighted the sisters comments out if context to make her appear incompetent, but to her credit she realized what you were up to and refocused on her professionalism. (Or are you trying to explore if she was on the verge of burnout?).

God this is typical for nurses who never worked with someome having a tracheotomy....it's so easy to change tubes, even if a stiched one comes out , there's nothing to fear. Just put a new tube in right away . If the hole already tightened it needs a little pressure, maybe a 90 degree angle; then turn and voila your in again. But he won't stop breathing if the tube is out. He surely will stop breathing if no one changes the tube and it becomes sticky and clotted. Saw patients pass out and stop breathing because they had not changed their tubes for ages...

I can care for trachestomy but they are scary yo those who don't or rarely see them. A littl3 bit of fear of the potential hazards of an complex airway is a good thing.

Maybe he was DNR, i work in a hospice and we are not allowed to do anything that will facilitate life once it is diminishing. Whether they catch a cold, fever or whatever. We are only allowed to comfort them. Meaning if the tube comes out, unfortunately we must follow the DNR. Its mind boggling to me.

Currently I am a hospice nurse. Prior to that I worked on neurology where we had trachs Galore. Not all trachs have an inner cannula which can be quickly put in and a patient can stop breathing if the trach comes out. I have experienced this before. Usually patients who are admitted to hospital must be on a palliative care program and that means that they will have a DNR which means do not resuscitate, order. So whatever happens to them we just let them die. Which is stupid to me but that is how they do it. Also if a nurse has no acute care experience and has only worked in residential or hospice care or used to work there but hasn't worked in a cute for a long time she or he may not be confident in her skills and need a refresher. No sense in skill shaming a nurse people have different experiences oh, that's it
