Hot Air , Hot Water from Engine | FOUR SEASON VAN LIFE | EP. 45

This week we take our hydronic heating capabilities to the next level, we will now generate hot air & hot water from the engine while we drive. We achieve this by plumbing a single plate heat exchanger into the Engine coolant loop system of ROAMR. By circulating our hydronic coolant loop system through that same exchanger it now provides Hot air and Hot water on demand directly from the engine heat already produced..
Hope you enjoyed the video, please COMMENT AND LIKE below, maybe even Hit that subscribe button to follow along as we convert this Mercedes Sprinter van that we call ROAMR into a 4X4 Four Season Van in which we plan to travel the continent with.. You will see all the ups and downs to a full build as I share mistakes, wins and everything in between.
Thank you for watching and we will see you on the next video.

Use a small pick to break the seal on the water lines. Harbor freight sells a little set with curved ones and straight. You just stick then between the fitting and hose and wiggle it off.

I think you have the better idea there. HumbleRoad did an engine heat exchanger in one of his van builds and it was heating the hot water tank too hot. I think by routing the engine coolant through the furnace first and maybe Romar's single plate heat exchanger may "exchange" less engine heat as well. All good stuff!

Most people mount the single plate heat exchanger under the hood in the engine bay so all they have to do is cut the vehicle's coolant line shortly after the coolant exits the radiator and mount the heat exchanger in between the cut i.e. there is as minimal disturbance of the vehicle's cooling system as possible and so a mechanic will have zero difficulty in recognizing what was done to the vehicle. Why did you mount your heat exchanger in the middle of the van next to the diesel heater? The reason espar has the engine heat exchanger down stream of the espar furnace is so in subzero temperatures the espar heater is going to be running to provide heat to the inside of the van, some of that heat is going to be lost to the engine heat exchanger to warm the engine coolant and thus the engine itself for easier subzero cold weather starts
@robertoalmodovar8915
@robertoalmodovar8915 3 года назад
Don't use zip ties on heater hoses they will cut into the hoses when it heats up. You will end up with a disaster. If you want to use zip ties cut a larger hose to wrap around them first.

Amazing! You caught the faulty build from the factory again! MB sold are selling so many sprinters that they are not doing a very good job with their quality control. My door slider came off a couple times from under the rail and I had a hard time closing the door. Fortunately my brother and our friend were able to place it back. Once again thank you for all the effort in making and uploading the videos! When you have a chance, could you please upload the parts (name and numbers from the greenlinehose) or if they sell it on amazon so that I could place my orders please? Had I not seen it with my own eyes I would not have believed it! MB not only failed to hook up the lines, but they failed to test the aux heater, and somehow QA passed it... It’s shocking! Dares, please do me a big favor. I don’t have the factory aux heater and want to install one, and need to see exactly where those two lines go in the engine. When you get the van back, if you could show us it would be much appreciated.

Hey Jeff! Big fan here. I’ve leaned on your wisdom in the past, so maybe it’ll work again. How did you thread the hydronic wiring from inside your van to the heater and pump underneath and seal it up? I want to avoid sealing the wiring permanently, but I can’t figure out how to use a wiring gland with those big connectors on both ends. Thank you!

Hi, I'm really liking your Espar videos. I'm trying to duplicate your bulkhead setup but can't locate any parts locally. Can you send me a parts list so I can order online. Or do you think that putting a sleeve around the tubing going through the floor would be adequate? After getting everything connected I'll use spray foam to firm things up and insulate. Thanks for the videos Jeff! I'm planning a new Sprinter build this summer which will include a Rixen system. Did you consider running a few of your air-exchanger coolant lines along cabin-facing 8020 to use it's excellent conducting properties to radiate heat into the cabin?
@DaresDrives
@DaresDrives 3 года назад
Perfect, good luck on your build. Glad my videos are bringing you value. No I did not, the reason being is you wouldn't be able to control that heat, and although it may be beneficial to have something like that in the cold weather you would be regretting that choice in the hot weather when heating your water and the framing got hot as well.. Hope this helps, thanks for watching and commenting.

hello Dares, excellent work. wouldn't it be better to cover the tubes that carry hot liquids and the water that are outside the van with insulation, so they don't lose heat or freeze in the winter? as well as protecting the fuel tank, as the hot tubes have stuck to the tank. I've seen it in several vans. look at this : ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-JUOq2iusgaE.html In relation to your system, what I have seen in other conversions of campervans, is that the engine of the van will heat the water to be used and also the air inside the van, this is ok, but in relation to the water, there are builders who put a thermal reservoir to store the heated water for later use. There are reservoirs that accumulate this hot water heated by the van engine for several hours. tks, hugs
@DaresDrives
@DaresDrives 3 года назад
Hello, this is a coolant line (anti-freeze) so no fear of it freezing, I don't think it would generate enough heat to affect the tanks but I do have a final fitment of those hoses coming up.
