Plant every clove. I've found it doesn't matter the size of the clove when planted they all grow nice heads if given proper nutrition.

Thanks for the advice. I did end up planting small ones too since I had some extra space. I wanted to experiment if they would actually be smaller as others have said or if they are the same.

I was shocked how big they were. I’m very happy with GarlicGods. They will probably be my go to place for garlic in the future.

I'm in 8b Florida. I ordered soft garlic two different kinds from on online nursery that were for the South. Planted 300. Nothing made it. Last year I planted elephant garlic I got from a local farmer. It's on its second year now and looking good. This fall I pick up a soft garlic from native nursery and so far it's doing good.

I’ve been thinking of trying elephant garlic. Everyone says it grows really well. I’ll have to give it a try.

@@HomegrownFloridaZ9a it does take two years. First year is just a single bulb, second year it forms the cloves. I was afraid to leave it in the ground but it looks like all came back up.

Nice 😊 you may also want to check out Creole varieties because they do much better in very warm climates like where you are.

I planted 125ish heads of softneck in NE FL. 1st yr I didn't do the cold stratification process, this year I did bc you said to 😂. I have about 99% of them with small shoots popping up....good news? We will see together ❤️!
@HomegrownFloridaZ9a

How did the ones from last year do for you? The new shoots should be fine. We don’t really get cold enough here to cause them any issues. Keep me updated. I’d love to hear how they do.

Last year was a bust, they barely split into a bulb. I did some research, took your advice and went bigger this year. I must remember to feed them.

What happens if you did not refrigerate your garlic before planting?
@HomegrownFloridaZ9a
@HomegrownFloridaZ9a 2 месяца назад
More than likely they would not form a bulb or cloves. It would be similar to a large green onion which can still be used, just won’t store for long.

Does the Creole variety need vernalization or is it like the Elephant garlic that doesn't need it?
@HomegrownFloridaZ9a
@HomegrownFloridaZ9a 3 месяца назад
I would still vernilize them. Elephant garlic is more closely related to onions so they don’t need it but any garlic will benefit from some time in the fridge
@Crasoma

@@HomegrownFloridaZ9a I see thanks miss. I might have to experiment seeing as i saw in a website for Cuban Purple(a Creole garlic)that is grown in spring and harvested in 90 days but the place is in PA so i guess it might still be cold around march over there.

@@HomegrownFloridaZ9a I'll be trying mostly heat resistant varieties, since my climate is Tropical. One of the varieties i'm looking to try is called Thermadrone, it is said that it barely needs vernalization, will try some of that along with the Creole variety. I'll let you know how that turns out.

Can you throw some ice occasionally in your garlic bed?
@HomegrownFloridaZ9a
@HomegrownFloridaZ9a 10 месяцев назад
You could but that would be a very significant amount of ice needed and you would have to do it multiple times a day. I don’t think it’s very practical
