What about the last rinse before the salt being a rinse in boiling distilled water. Zero chance of unwanted minerals remaining and the water would evaporate fast for an even, dry surface for the molten jacuzzi. ✌
I've seen a pale white fog on polished parts washed in 99% pure isopropyl alcohol ,and acetone. I remove it with a microfiber cloth that's freshly washed by gloved hands in hot water with Dawn dishsoap and hung to dry. Paper towels leave scratches. ✌
I’m no expert, but tap water does indeed contain a number of minerals. It’s also not something you can control, and for a critical step such as this, you need all the control you can get.
After the little disappointment at the end all I can offer you is,” If at first you don’t succeed try, try again “. I’m sure you’ll fix the problem some how. Good on you Mum for lending a helping hand, regards from Down Under.
Well live to fight another day. After your commentary on it needing to be boiling and how to adjust was very surprised to see you put it in anyway with it not having the boiling action to keep everything all mixing around evenly. Looked good from first views so can't wait to see you get it corrected and looking stunning.
O man the work behind this knife is unbelivable and i really dont understand who can dislike this work, i think that they are only jealous, kyle for me is one of the best and meticulous knife builder on youtube. Thanks for your tutorials 👍
Oh man, what a cliffhanger. I sure hope you don't have to strip the blueing off and start the finish over. 🤞 fingers crossed. Thanks Royer team for another fine video.
Salt bath nitride is what the gun industries use to make a jet black look. It is similar to bluing. Also makes the surface super hard so may not be the best for the initial sharpening.
Dam dude! You're one hell of a craftsman and an artist!....you should start a school and show other people how to do this stuff!...I'm trying to teach myself this stuff I hope I'm as good as you one day!🙂
Hey thanks Marcos We are teaching my friend We have online courses for beginners, intermediate, and pros. Check out learnknifemaking.com Glad you’re here Marcos Dad
Keep your head up.Your work is always stunning in the end. You are a true artist and master at your craft. Takes time, love and passion. I always look forward to your videos. Make me laugh at times and jaw drop on what you end up creating.
I watched your first video 11 years ago. I have been bladesmithing ever since. I was sad when you left for a while, I don't know what happened. I guess you were sick or something. Anyway, good see you back at it, or still at it
I find your failures to be more informative than your successes. Not only do you humanize your skill/talent, but also inspire others to doggedly find solutions to the problems. It is uplifting to see masters have the same hiccups as the rest of us and to see you get back on that horse.
Not sure what kind of water set up you guys have , but I’d suggest an in home Reverse Osmosis filtration system that would eliminate any residue left on the blade from rinsing. Love the channel!
Have you ever considered gun bluing and then regrinding the bevels to have a like... Duo tone? Maybe even a soft fade from steel gray to the black? Might look neat. Would be interesting to see a rough test piece of that. If you're interested.
Copy that my friend Failure is not fatal Most challenges and failures are far from the heart Glad you’re here on this journey together with us all 78 Dad
Bluing that would be difficult and the finish would not be durable. A somewhat similar process, salt bath nitride, is used on stainless parts to great effect. Also makes the surface very hard and slick, which is great for mail.
How does hot bluing perform for scratch resistance? Trying to make a black glossy finish for a knife and acid just scratches too easily and DLC is too expensive for this project. Considering hot bluing, but would have to get all the equipment, so want to make sure it's worth it.
Seems like you clean the knife very carefully but then you reintroduce contaminates by rinsing off with kitchen sink and hose water. I think you should use distilled water for the rinsing.
Without watching the video I’m guessing the temper got jacked up from the heating element?? I did that once when coffee darkening. The coffee was about 150 degrees but the bottom of the pan was like 5-600 🤦🏻♂️
Hi kyle. I'm interested if you found why thé blueing salt did not work 'cause i' m trying to parkerise some blade and i found that it does not sty on the blade if i'm not hot enough (140 C)
I would have thought the same thing till I got a small hot tub. The Ph and alkalinity changes when temperature goes up Pretty cool stuff. And that’s just tap water. 👍🏻☕️🔥⚔️ Dad
Sorry, but that was an unprofessional, beginner level sacrifice of a work of art. You should have made sure everything was perfect before moving to the next step. Make sure the vat is large enough to accommodate the blade, make sure it is boiling and at the desired temperature BEFORE you put the blade in. I just don't understand your thought process on this...
Do your parents usually help you? Maybe you should get help from people who know what they're doing. I think your father didnt do his part correctly like your mother did. Lol
While watching you wash the blade I had severe anxiety that the bad thing involved the sharp part of the knife. From past vlogs it seems like the bluing demons do not favor you. I am assuming that you have consulted professionals on how to blue stuff like a pro ... Maybe it is time to sacrifice a goat or a small child to the bluing demons to gain their favor.
I figure that your comment about sacrificing a child was supposed to be humorous. It's not. Children were actually burned alive as a sacrifice to the Canaanite deity molech ( Leviticus 18:21 ) Demons are the opposite of anything good. Evil does not do good
@@rogerlyonsjr9302 alot worse happens to children in modern days .. if you actually care about children then put your money where you mouth is and stop purchasing and using products made with child slave labor. I will continue to jest about sacrificing infants to demon gods of gun barrel bluing
@@PaulMcClellanmn " A lot worse " ? Personally, I can't imagine much worse than being burned alive. Child slave labor is horrible and needs to be stopped. Any child abuse needs to be stopped. Making an accusation that I support it when you don't know anything about me, what I buy, or what my profession is ( American automotive industry ) . Is unreasonable. God gave mankind free will, but that doesn't mean that all the choices people make using their free will are good. For example adults choosing to make children work, or worse. I agree with you. You have the right to do what you want.
@@rogerlyonsjr9302 5 minutes of agony or a life time of pain and terror ... I know what I would rather endure . American automotive industry utilized a world wide supply chain from the mines the factories and the boats bringing the parts to you human rights violations are everywhere and American politicians turn a blind eye for campaign contributions. You are guilty I am guilty The only difference between us is I am not blind to the anguish that my first world luxury costs the 3nd world laborer. Go back to your union rep and demand to strike until all international soureced part's supply chain meets the same standards that your union demands for its laborers.
Hot bluing needs to be done at boiling temps. It needs to be boiling at 282 for 10 minutes, then drop it. Let it reach the desired color or temp, pull it out and rinse in cold water. Inspect. If it's not the color you want, back in the salt tank. If you like it, put in in very hot water, not boiling, to heat it back up. 30 seconds in the hot water tank, pull it out and while hot, place it in some kind of oil to neutralize the salts. Pull it out (wipe on rig oil if you have it) wrap in newspaper or paper towels. The bluing will set and develop over the next 24 hours. We blue guns all the time.
That’s heart breaking to see you so discouraged... keep up the good work! You are so talented. Your videos are enjoyable even in the failures. We all understand this moment.
Your cleaning process always seems kinda backwards and repeated. To go from boiling the blade to using regular deterrgent and water, you're using a degreaser where you already know there is no grease, that can leave its own soap residue behind.
Rust will show up if Kyle keeps it wet for too long. The bluing salts will amplify the salty by a lot! For Kyle to wait 4 more minutes while the salts boil with water on the blade would be bad. He would have to go back to hand sanding it then buff it again. That took 8 hours last time. -Josh Royer
