In this video filmed at the Walter Tosto SpA in Chieti, Italy (part of the AMW consortium, with Ansaldo Nucleare S.p.A and Mangiarotti S.p.A) a stainless steel plate for the ITER vacuum vessel is pressed into the required shape through an open die hot forming process. (Published with the authorization of Walter Tosto SpA.)

i wanted to see the cooled part after each of these processes so badly.

I love seeing the enterprise where all nations together tries to solve the energy problem instead of making wars with each other.

I'm new to metallurgy, can someone explain why the water doesn't vaporize when they dunk that giant red-hot piece of metal into it ? I fully expected a massive cloud of steam to erupt as soon as it touched the water. Is that even water ?

That may be oil or even liquid salt or metal.

I believe that is oil putting hot metal into water temperature shocks it and cussing it to break

It's like when you have a skillet so hot that water just beads up and rolls around, rather than wetting it. A layer of vapor forms between the liquid and the hot object, insulating it. This is called the Leidenfrost effect - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leidenfrost_effect

I'm going with 'it's not water', though I'm surprised there's no flame if it's oil. I also don't think it's liquid salt, that stuff is HOT, you'd see some effect of that heat in the video, like the heat haze off of a road. So I'm going with some sort of oil, that has a flash point obviously higher that what this metal has been heated to. Would be nice to understand the requirement for the quench however as well, what sort of hardening they are going for, and how this affects their dimensional stability.

@@4wdguydrivesby I'm quite certain it is water; it does not look like oil, and oil is likely to produce flames. Liquid salts and metals tend to be very reactive, and I've never heard of them used for quench. Not to mention the safety concerns with a very hot liquid. If an oil had a flash point hotter than red hot metal, that implies the oil could be red hot and not burn (i.e. color temperature)... seems implausible. Not sure why everyone thinks water quench is bad - water quench is used in some applications, oil quench in others. See wikipedia - or that video website... what's it called again, ootube? ;)

What is the liquid used to quench the red-hot part?

What press did thy use to make the top and botton of that press? And that guy was way close to that tank, if he gets steam on hin it will melt off his face

Why is there no plasticine monster being crushed at the end of the video? That's how hydraulic press videos are supposed to end.
