Just ran into you guys at Costco! (Small world haha) or small Juneau... I wish I had more time to talk to you guys but I was super frustrated and busy but that's life. I will watch the new video tonight. Have a good one and nice meeting you
Hi Frank it was awesome meeting you and sorry we couldn't chat longer! I was going to ask if you fish over at DIPAC or have ever tried casting for kings over in Lena. My friend caught a big king casting a flying c from the shore over in Lena last year. You can get kings from the shore between town and sheep creek as well in the channel. I love casting for pinks over at Point Louisa also. Hopefully this cold and dark weather will be gone soon and the fishing season can begin once again! Great crossing paths and tight lines my friend! Captain Zac
@@CaptainZac I do fish pretty much everywhere from shore. (My new addiction is bobber fishing with eggs or herring) Do I keep the fish? Well that is another question lol. I am from Sitka and the fishing and hunting over there is just phenomenal. I rarely fished from shore in Sitka. But yes I do cast at Lena and have seen some nice Kings caught from shore. When I was a teenager I used to commercial fish for my grandpa out of POW. My last year was 2009. Wake up and pull the anchor at 4 am and usually didn't finish up until midnight! Appreciate your vids Captain!
Hey Frank I love fishing with eggs under a bobber! It is a blast when they strike and battling them to the shore and up on onto the bank is hard to beat! I like catching cohos over at DIPAC like this (at 4am when there aren't 200 people there) - although that fishery was closed last season. I did some steelhead fishing back in PA over the holidays drifting egg sacs under a float - a similar technique would definitely work around here. Wow how cool that you used to commercial fish down around POW. I bet you have some crazy stories! I bet that those days on the water were exhausting but incredibly rewarding. Tight lines my friend! Captain Zac
Hi Wayne thanks for watching and I appreciate the positive comment! While I don't recall exactly which colors we trolled on this day, it was likely in my typical patters schemes of green/chartreuse, pink/purple and white/metallic. Hard to go wrong with these - sometimes you'll hit a "hot bite" where you can't keep a certain color pattern in the water without getting a bite! Thanks again and tight lines! Captain Zac
I grew up and spent my life fishing on the waters around Juneau.. Captain Zac , this is just 100% my opinion, but I really feel your channel would be more successful and get more views if you posted up-to-date current content. When I watch your videos, I never see how all that familiar area look NOW.. i’m always seeing it months and months in the past. videos that are real time like live streams or ones that are only one and two days old are SO MUCH more captivating then watching things that happened many months ago.
Hi Bill thanks for watching and I appreciate the comment. I post of a mix of very recent videos throughout the season and then some additional videos during the offseason. I know folks enjoy recent content, however, I do hear frequently from fans that they appreciate me posting halibut and salmon footage during the offseason - it helps them get through the dark and cold winters! Also, given the time it takes to edit raw footage into high quality final videos, I am time-constrained in the summer. If it comes down to editing videos or getting out on the water to go fishing, I'll choose fishing 100% of the time during Alaska's short fishing season. Thanks again for tuning in and tight lines in 2024! Captain Zac
Hi Kurt thanks for stopping by and I'm glad you enjoyed this halibut and salmon action! Yes great idea - I am planning on making a halibut video (or videos) similar to the salmon tips one I made last year. I generally catch pacific cod as bycatch when halibut fishing - a nice bonus as I'm targeting halibut! Apologies for the delayed response to your note - I'll reply shortly! Thanks and tight lines my friend! Captain Zac
I have been halibut fishing in Alaska 4 times. Absolutely so much fun. How long does it take for halibut to grow to the length that they are keepable? I’m sure I asked one of the captains before but can not remember.
Thanks for watching and I'm glad you enjoyed this halibut and salmon action! Here are some details I found with a quick search - tight lines! Captain Zac Halibut are relatively slow-growing fish, taking up to 16 years to reach their full size. In their first year of life, halibut only grow to about one pound. However, they gain weight rapidly in subsequent years, reaching 15 pounds by the time they are four years old. By adulthood, halibut can weigh more than 100 pounds. Although they are slow-growing fish, halibut have a long lifespan, with some individuals living for more than 30 years.
Me and my wife are coming to Juneau this summer for our honeymoon, is there a charter in the area you would recommend for halibut/ salmon and possibly some crab?
Hi Tyler thanks for stopping by and I'm glad you enjoyed this halibut and salmon action! Congrats on your marriage and that's great to hear you'll be in Juneau this summer! You might consider Captain Alan - him and his wife are awesome and they have a very nice boat. adventuresinalaskacharters.com/ Tight lines! Captain Zac
Hi @arklaskanadventures thanks for stopping by and I'm glad you enjoyed this action! For halibut I've got a Penn Slammer IV 8500 on a Penn Carnage III jigging rod and for salmon I've got a Shimano Tekota line counting reel on a Lamiglas Redline Composite trolling rod. Tight lines! Captain Zac
Thanks @baulz21 I'm glad you enjoyed this footage! For halibut I'm using a Penn Slammer IV 8500 with 80lb PowerPro on a Penn Carnage III Jigging Spinning rod. For salmon I'm using a Shimano Tekota on a Lamiglas Redline Composite trolling rod. Thanks again and tight lines! Captain Zac
Hi Jason thanks for watching and I'm glad you enjoyed this halibut and coho action! Taking the boat completely out of gear can actually lead to less control of the fish during the battle, especially during a double. When in gear, there is constant tension (which helps avoid a thrown hook) and generally (but not always) keeps the fish "in line" behind the boat. When out of gear, the fish can zig zag and run everywhere, including crossing lines, slacking lines leading to thrown hooks, running in front of the boat leading to chaotic course corrections on the kicker, etc. My go-to move is often to reduce the power on the kicker without taking it completely out of gear. This captures the benefit of constant tension without creating the issues that arise when completely out of gear. Thanks and tight lines! Captain Zac
It scares the bejesus out of me to watch you wife off of the swim platform netting fish without a life vest especially in some what rough water. I personally have experienced falling overboard and I got sucked down by the weight of my boots in a flash. Maybe give your wife one like you have.
Hi @milstuff4530 thanks for watching and I appreciate the feedback and concern. My wife does have the same life vest as me however she finds it very uncomfortable when holding a fishing rod (messes with the anchor point). We continue to search for an option that maximizes both safety and comfort. Thanks again and tight lines my friend! Captain Zac
