Hey @whiskeyoscarlimafox thanks for watching and I'm glad you found this tips video helpful! Great suggestion - I'll aim to cover this in a future video. The two biggest factors I consider when using the kicker during a salmon battle are keeping steady pressure on the fish (to help avoid a slacked line and thrown hook) and to keep the fish situated in a good spot for netting (away from the engine but within reach of the netter on the rear transom or back corner of the boat). Sometimes this requires improvising on the fly since salmon can run all over the place - at the boat, under the boat, etc. Does this make sense? Thanks again and tight lines my friend! Captain Zac

Honestly, I've only caught a few ling cod over the years and am still getting "dialed in" to targeting them specifically here around Juneau. They are much easier to come by closer to the Gulf of Alaska, for instance around Sitka or Elfin Cove. Hi @carlkoch6460 thanks for stopping by! Fairly often - adding a dot of scent to a hootchie is really a "no regrets move" that can help give you a small advantage, especially when the bite is slow. When the bite is hot, they'll hit almost anything and the scent probably plays less of a determiner of a strike. Thanks again and tight lines! Captain Zac

I now have two Beckman nets aboard - one large tournament net and one smaller more maneuverable net. This setup works great and having two nets can save the day when you get a coho or king double! Thanks and tight lines! Captain Zac

Hi @snagrbuster7343 thanks for the thoughtful comment - I'm always interested to learn more about salmon (especially those that I don't primarily target). I believe I'm on safe ground to suggest that the primary way of catching sockeyes in Alaska is either netting (commercial gill nets or cast/dip nets) or flossing in streams/rivers. Fish Alaska Magazine suggests that "Sockeye salmon fishing can be challenging for anglers new to the activity. The predominant technique for catching this species is by flossing them." www.fishalaskamagazine.com/sockeye-salmon-fishing/ It sounds like there are other techniques besides flossing that can produce fish as well (like the yarn and egg loop you suggest!). Every so often a sockeye will actually hit a hootchie behind a flasher but that is pretty rare! Thanks again for the insightful comment - tight lines! Captain Zac

Yes indeed - Pinks can certainly be good to eat especially if you take care of the meat and avoid late spawn cycle fish. I agree pinks can provide a lot of action and fun out on the water! Given the abundance of salmon up here, I generally stick to king salmon (whole meat and smoked) and cohos (smoked) in terms of eating. Thanks again and tight lines! Captain Zac

I found pinks to be OK if cooked fresh. If they’re frozen - the flesh will be mushy when thawed!
