It was definitely worth investigating Rob, and saved me a few hundred dollars from having to buy a new freezer. Many times people throw things out when it could just be a simple easy fix. Thanks buddy!

@@SkillSavvyDIY Yes I know Rus. Had to buy a new dryer last month when I was out of town helping my Dad. My old dryer is sitting in the garage now....probably just a thermal overload opened. I've had it happen before, but being out of town my GF had to have a dryer so I sent her to Lowe's to grab one...$700 later!

Get prepared cause it’s going to happen but hopefully yours will go longer without needing to replace the start relay

@@SkillSavvyDIY Rus, As easy as this fix is I’m definitely going to check this first if I ever have an issue with freezer or fridge before I decide to junk it and get a new one. It sure couldn’t hurt to do this check, worse case scenario, it gets junked right?

@@jjsager1 It is absolutely worth investigating before junking it, especially when it’s not that old.

Was your compressor initially kicking out on overload like mine was? The relay should be replaced only if the compressor won't start up and run. Both the compressor and the relay will be warm while running to answer your question but that doesn't mean it is pumping correctly. It does take a little while to remove the heat from the freezer, but if its not cooling still and the compressor is still running then the relay was not your issue. You have either low refrigerant, a restriction in the refrigerant line or a compressor that is not pumping. Gauges would have to used to determine the problem.

No it does not. A capacitor can store voltage but not this thermistor style start relay. Just make sure to unplug the freezer if you ever have to replace this part.
