It's sad to see a game fail not because of bad gameplay, not incompetent or uninspired devs, not lack of interest or a passionate community, but because of poor management that, ultimately, failed to monetize
I remember 1 time I had you on my team in SL and you were giving me genuine tips in a non-offensive way (which is rare in this community) on how to play Johanna and it was enough for us to start winning fights. that was probably the first season I started playing Johanna, and now Johanna is one of my best heroes and your tips certainly have contributed to that. You've helped a lot of people in the community with your videos and we're all thankful for that
You can give as many non-offensive tips as you want, 90% of the community will take them as an offense and report you anyway. Game chat is dead, because everything you say will be used against you. Blizzard killed communication and any tryhards by punishing them to elimination. It's not just the toxic people who are the problem, but all those special snowflakes out there who feel offended by the slightest advice.
HotS is my favourite game of all time. It sucks that we won't get any more content but at least it's in a really balanced place at the moment. I'll see you in the Nexus until they turn the lights off.

Heroes of the Storm is one of my absolute favorite games of all time, and seeing it end like this kinda feels like seeing my favorite bar turn the keys. I really think HOTS was on the brink of evolving the MOBA genre but alas Blizzard busted it. They could've at least released Ravenlord as a character. Heck I'll even take him as a *ugh* Ranged Assassin
thank you NotParadox for all these years teaching us and going thru patch notes with us, you are the best. i only play ARAM now and dont brother to play any other mode, due to poor match making and long queue time. Disappointment after disappointment from blizzard, D3, D4, Hots, I am thinking to move to League of Legends.
To hell with blizzard. They just take away hots devs to other shit "games". Hots dnt make them big ass money, so they just dnt care about this game, same happens with SC. Old blizz we love us dead.
Blizz basically capped the money you could spend on the game and then acted surprised when people stopped spending money. When you make a system where your most dedicated players have nothing to buy, you've done something wrong. Seems obvious but Blizz never really changed anything after 2.0.

I feel like these news are not news and they shouldn't be changing anything. So, naturally, I'm sad to learn that so many content creators are discontinuing their work on the game. I still believe there is a considerable chance for things to get better after the Microsoft deal is completed. Yes, the game is not profitable at the moment, but you listed at least a couple ways to monetize it better. And additionally, as you also said IT IS A GOOD GAME, and good games can easily become profitable. Apparently, there isn't a single mf at Activision that understands this, but I am pretty sure that there will be at least one at Microsoft that will realize what potential lies behind HotS. I mean... How hard can it be to see it?..

I never understood why they removed the "buy 20 heroes for $20" bundle that came from the 2.0 launch. Keeping these things up - or similar ones would really help people who start playing for a first time OR people who make alt accounts. Also "copy my account to a different region for $40" would have made them big money.
HotS has become my favorite game since I played it in beta. Thanks for your videos. I hope microsoft/blizzard listens to your suggestions. The battle pass is such a simple good idea and a map editor feature, I think they both if they were made a feature would really help this game thrive.
Expanding is smart. While I would love to continue seeing more HotS videos when you feel like it, I'm curious about you showcasing other Mobas. There's another RU-vidr/Twitch streamer I follow who did that, and it's been working out for him. League in particular, I'd be curious to see. I've been dipping my toes into it the past few weeks, and having another familiar face explain the intricacies would be nice.
nah fan hots is not a "community" he is just a small streamer (around 800 viewers) and grubby would never be toxic towards anyone, there are 2 big communities that i know, Heroes Hearth and Khaldor tv...

@@Xanthanarium well yea is small... compared with other yes it is, notparadox said a "big communty", i'll tell you what i call a "big" community: on youtube Heroes Hearth with around 24k, in twitch WSDMgaming (Heroes Hearth) have 32k and KhaldorTV on youtube with 75k (on youtube) and in twitch with 105k.... if u think 800 is even comparable with 20k or 75k average viewers... then i dont know what to tell you 😅i think notparadox was referring to those streamers and their followers/viewers on youtube/twitch and discord, but not all of them i think

RU-vid subs are an entirely different number from average Twitch views with an entirely different meaning; Fan, for example, has 56 thousand subscribers on RU-vid. That does not mean that he has 56 thousand people watching every stream or every video he makes. Khaldor does get more viewers than Fan on Twitch, yes, but only a little over 1K total on average. Khaldor also gets higher viewer numbers on Twitch due to the fact that he streams less often than Fan. You have to remember that the average viewer number is strictly the number of viewers watching the stream at any given time--for that statistic specifically, 800 is relatively large in the grand scheme of things. Streamers who stream on a regular schedule for several hours 5-7 days a week always get a lower ratio of average viewers to followers/subs because most people who watch them drop in and out of the stream regularly; in other words, Khaldor's viewers are concentrated into smaller time frames, so while Fan might have a nearly completely different set of 800 people watching him at the end of his stream compared to the start, the majority of Khaldor's viewers stick around throughout the entirety of whatever series they're there to watch him cast, making more of them end up watching simultaneously. Conversely, Fan's RU-vid videos tend to get double the views of either Khaldor's or HeroesHearth's. This is because, again, Fan's method of content creation for RU-vid alters what the statistic means. Khaldor's content is almost all half an hour to hour-long videos, which do not get as many views as ten to twenty minute videos would on a channel with similar subs--such as Fan. This is partially because the RU-vid algorithm doesn't suggest them as often as 10-20 min videos, and partially because the video has to be watched for a longer amount of time to count a view; as far as I know, the view counter works relative to the duration of the video. So, that said, I am fairly certain that Fan wasn't one of the creators that Paradox was talking about. I think Khaldor is a good guess, considering his general demeanor. But Fan does have one of the largest communities of any HotS creator. Top 5 definitely.
Your ideia to do videos about the cognitive side of games is truly wonderful and I think it's a really nice way to expand your content and your own knowledge of the subject, there's a lot of channels that talk about this topic, but I'm pretty sure that most of the creators don't have the background and education that you have, so for sure it is something truly interesting, maybe not to most of your audience, but, as much I would like it, you can't be stuck only talking about heroes. Maybe this is a good opportunity for you to spread your wings and do something great. I'm a suck of for science and games, I'm just an average heroes player, but I am an anthropology student and soon I'll be doing a masters in behavioral evolution, and this new video ideas that you said are a real great opportunity to create original videos, but also scientific knowledge. So for me, that's a big yes, it won't be easy, but if you're willing to do the work, the research and the data analysis, ye man, go for it, if you don't want to, which is totally okay, just keep doing what you're doing and just make videos about other games, most people are here for HotS content, but the part of your audience that truly matters, the ones that see every video, engage and support, are here for you. I’ve played other MOBAs and I hate them all. I don’t feel connected to any of their characters. Not only is HOTS gameplay unique, but it’s all characters that I’ve grown up with. Regardless of if they never touch this game again I’m gonna still play till it’s shut off

There's a factor in this that folks tend to forget about. One reason people ran out of content to purchase (or to grind for lootboxes) was the Veteran lootboxes. Blizzard over-corrected to make "veteran" players happy, but these lootboxes were way too good. I remember that at the beginning of Heroes 2.0 I basically had almost everything I wanted from the veteran lootboxes and the remaining things i wanted i got from the gems I won from those lootboxes.
It is a real shame. Heroes stood out amongst MOBAs and was truly unique. But Blizzard, among other gaming companies, prefer to ignore their playerbase and run their games into the ground. It's a real shame.
Blizzard and its community (honestly for most games they deserve each other) are one of these companies that actively treat people who want to enjoy their games in their own way as despicable people. "Ignore their playerbase" is a massive understatement.
Maybe cover Brawls? I know a lot of people just play that now days and the meta definitely changes in that game mode. Also Probius is one of my favorites.
My heart goes out to the community, can't say it enough. NotParadox's community was also one of the first along with the incredible Kala's where I felt like I was growing as a player. Great memories with people from Kala's server oh man and it hit us HARD when they announced the end of the HGC. Especially the shitty way they did it. But this game is just undeniably good, plain n simple. I had so much fun picking it up. Best moba since dota days. Such an imaginative game overall with that stellar Blizzard cast of characters. But I called it quits when I saw the signs and haven't looked back since. Cheers to those who kept playing and my utmost respect to the content and tournament creators. If nothing else I believe the game got what it deserved.. A great community, fantastically dedicated and nice content creators and some amazing moments even in its twilight years.
Feels like when you're parents tell you that they are shutting down the amusement park you went to as a child. All the memories, people met on the way, hype moments and reels are not all but an upcoming memory. I feel sad that'll it makes no sense to start streaming my favorite game except out of pure passion.
"Incredibly rare" and "gifting to all players" is just not compatible.. how lame is that sentence xD I agree very much with your observations.. so many mistakes were made with this game from a commercial perspective and they had all the time in the world to fix it so I will say lack of competencies on that front in Blizzard.. also bringing loot boxes completely killed the excitement/incentive of spending money on a skin or mount knowing anyone could get it by chance. Additionally they received heat from parents misconceiving it as a gambling concept. You need to put yourself first mate. Do what you find pleasure in and not what others want of you!
I appreciate all your work on the game. I watched quite a bit of your content back when they were still releasing new heroes. The bottom line though is Whoever developed this game Abandoned Blizzard along time ago! There's no loving hands on this game there hasn't been for 5 years. Activision bled this company dry, And no matter how much we love the game with no content the desire to play just recedes. A slow death for sure. All us real Blizzard fans have more contempt for this company than love for what's come before.

Definitely tough situation. There is no reason you can't be HOTS's Grubby btw, he is still successfully making WC3 content. I would advise going with 80/20 rule. Since almost all of your viewers are here for HOTS do it 80% of the time and LOL 20% of the time
Blizzard should legit use Diablo Immortal's massive revenues and throw a fraction of it on HotS. "That's not sustainable". So what? It's still better and fairer than the current model.

You're very right about Magic seeing their pro scene as promotion. Even to the extend, that the "Pro" in their Pro League, does actually stand for "Promotional" not "Professional".
Honestly I wish they brought back 34 bit support. Without it my 4gig pavilion will not run it anywhere besides a.i. and it can STILL run league + ffxiv just fine I would love to play but I cant :(
I still play hots with my pals in my laptop from 2012 and I will still do it because this game is so good. Hopefully this announcement doesn't discourage many people. But yes, keep having fun NotParadox!
This sucks. Hots is the best moba i ever played. Tried everything on the market and its just full of toxicity and whining if you ever get 1 item outside of meta.Fun tactics? Well that gets you banned. Hots didnt had that. You just join, chose some talents and play. Its the only game i play with my old crew from wow days and now this hits ... we will still play it because this doesnt change much about the current game but ... Yeah. Blizzard just fucked up the long term support ... i guess you could say like in every other game they did.

they recently gave the balance duties to community members (a team made of a few pro players) to balance SC2, would be cool if they did the same with HOTS
Weird timing. HoN just got the axe, but Microsoft should slowly takeover ActiBlizz. They might revitalize it, or cut it off as they already have LoL with gamepass. Now we wait. . .
Please come make some league content! I spend around 80% of my gaming time there now, mostly playing HotS with specific friends or as a group activity. Often it’s ARAM. Almost all of my “educational” RU-vid content consumption is League focused now.
The only thing is maybe in about 5yrs after Microsoft fully acquires Activision Blizzard and splits Blizzard from Activision, We may get a resurgence if they decide to take HOTS and build into with their other franchises they now own to have a Microsoft Moba with buyable/earnable characters The biggest thing Blizzard could have done is added a map editor for the community and that like it did in WC3 would have allowed creation of so many cool custom games
Many thanks to analyze Blizzards statements and the current state. Also thanks to share your thoughts. From my point of view Blizzard only state the current situation: Less updates and Patches and less motivation to improve that. I still play HotS quite a lot and also quite often, as I think its in the core a really great game. Though I'm often angry with the balance and the setup of the quick matches and (from my point of view) some FAR OP heros only used to gank others.
I used to play LoL since s2 and when hots came out I stopped playing lol because man, hots really did an awesome job with the heroes talents and mechanics, the maps were unbalanced as hell due to some broken combos (I remember Varian-abathur being a pain in the ass) but they were really fun to play. Fell in love with heroes like Varian,Abathur, Hanzo, Blaze and Malfurion. My hope is that with Microsoft adquiring Blizzard they will somehow revive this game, maybe even with the classic "name change to attract new people" thing, who knows
I think the game also suffered from goal conflict with their other IP.... They wanted to promote Overwatch League but even dropped the ball there. I like the Battle Pass idea, but it couldn't sustain the SC2 pro scene.
Even after the first maintenance, my thoughts were that If there was an event, i would buy a 1 month booster, so pretty much on the style of a battlepass
Here is my take on what Blizzard shoud do now 1 - Release all maps(including the previous version the maps already in the game) in QM and make the player opt in or out for queueing on these "legacy maps" 2 - Make the previous versions of the maps visiualy a little bit diferent from the current versions(different weather, day/night you name it) 3 - Bring brawl back! 4 - Put all seasonal content in store and increasse the price in gems/shards to obtain cosmetics. I believe this is not hard to do, and will probably bring a final fresh air in the game. Love this game, the only moba that i consider really fun, unique and doesnt tire me of seeing the same map over and over again like others mobas. sorry for my english
I think Microsoft will do more for HOTS, they love multiplayer games, I think they will bring heroes from their franchises, just imagine seeing master chief vs reynor, or seeing banjo in the game, I might be hopeful but if you think about it HOTS could be a big platform for promoting MS games/game pass

Thats why league made money u couldnt really get a skin unless u paid…… Hots had so much potential, even with erbs they couldve copied that if they just tried Wouldve been awesome to have a BR HOTS with all the heros

Blizzard shutting down the servers wasn't a concern, to be honest. If there is at least one thing I can praise Blizzard for is how they keep support for their games even after decades. _Diablo I_ servers *still* exist to this day. So i was never worried they'd shutdown HotS since keeping the servers functional costs very little to them. That said, it's still really sad that Blizzard did that to one of their best IPs, which had some of the most talented devs in the company. Let's just hope that when the purchase of ActivisionBlizzard finally concludes, Microsoft will see the potential of this game and revive it.
I think using Magic as an example of the pro scen isn't a good choice now because it has been on a severe decline for a couple of years. Competitive events, prize pools and compensations were cut down. The company tried to push esport on Magic Areana. But their unclear goals and procedures drove players away. However, Magic has been growing sucessfully in both player base and revenue, even during Covid, despite the decline of pro scene. The game has shifted to selling premium products and Commander which is now the most popular format with no pro scene. TLDR. Even Magic has been moving away from the pro scene as players have shifted interest and spending to other parts of the game. It's sad that the pro scene isn't the most quintessential of game anymore.
What does this mean? Blizzard is putting all their eggs in one basket thats already falling apart. Diablo Immortal is a fucking failure WoW hasn't had a relevant good expansion in years and the last one has pushed more fans away So Blizzard is banking on OW2 being the golden goose, spoilers... it's not doing great
I still have a lot of fun in HotS - learning new heroes and gaining rank - perfecting other heroes. I wish there was another game I could go to that was similar, but I just don't know of any other MOBAs that work the same way. I'd also really like to see videos on the effects of Taurine and other typically promoted things on gameplay performance.
as great as this game is/was (I haven't played since round alterac map release) having now picked up League again I can never imagine myself ever wanting to play HOTS. RIP

In the game I spend like 15€. But HGC tournaments always created hype with me that's why I bought other merchandise like tshirts to show that I am part of the community.

the game has pretty much been in maintenance mode for a long while but the fact they came out and said it really put a nail in the coffin. i really hope that microsoft makes use of it because current blizzard management is just a dumpster fire of mismanagement. like i remember when they said they were pulling artists off of HotS and putting them on OW instead... and you look at the amount of content they pumped out since that announcement(in overwatch), it really wasn't all that much. i don't know if it's because they're publicly traded but blizzard is where great games start and die shortly after. they have no idea what they're doing and it shows. but hey, not all companies can be like nintendo and stick it to their shareholders to make good profits.. even if they suck with online services or think you should rebuy the game 5 times.
I recently uninstalled Hots because I was getting a lot of un-fun games and it ended up feeling like getting locked into 20min of waisted of time, so I switched to LoL. Even still the MOBA game design has gotten kind of stale.
At this point i'm not sure why they even put this out. We all already knew it was in maintenance mode since they cancelled 2018 HGC and basically every pro left the game
