Multiple factors go into it, including multiple systemic failures... and of course, religion. I grew up in that district and I know what it's like. Still have some family up there, too. :(
It literally brought me to tears when she's following this 18 year old down the street who just lost a boat load of his fellow students and making it about herself. Sad really. Cold and callous. There is no empathy. There is the typical emotional immaturity we see in narcissists.

Edit: Further it should be noted that many of AOC's policy positions are the kind of common sense antipoverty initiatives that, in less than a decade, turned the USA from a quasi-industrialized backwater into ready to fight WW2, & afterward ushered in the 20 most prosperous years in all of human history. @@Lacobi-o6n Listen. My philosophy is as follows: I don't care what their reason for abortion is. I don't care if it's a fetus, or a baby, or a child, or a full-grown adult. I don't care if the fetus didn't have any say in the situation. None of those criteria matter. What matters is that something was happening to someone's body (pregnancy,) and so they should be the one to make the decision. Imagine this: You're in desperate need of a blood transfusion, and somebody agrees to help. The doctors hook up the needles, and their blood is flowing into your body. (This is obviously not how blood transfusions work, I'm just trying to make it fit my analogy.) But then, for an unknown reason, they don't want to give you any more of their blood. There are two options here: A- it's within their rights to revoke their consent and pull out the needle B- they should be legally forced to continue giving blood See? Even if they consented beforehand, and even if their decision causes you to die, it's within their right to bodily autonomy to pull out the needle. Abortion is not about the age or stage of development of the fetus. It's not about when personhood begins. Those are all red herrings. The only thing that matters is somebody's rights over their own body.
