Can we take a second to appreciate what a great actor Hugh Laurie is. One of the best to ever grace television
@jonnywishbone9516
@jonnywishbone9516 Год назад
Quite likely that nobody will ever see this comment, but whilst the story that one of the producers saw Laurie's casting tape and assumed he was American because of the fidelity of his accent is well known, if you're American I recommend to you Blackadder and specifically Blackadder Goes Fourth. It is a near 4 decade old comedy series and is absolutely nothing like any American sitcom ever made; it stars Mr Bean before he developed brain damage as well as Laurie in a role you will find completely unrecognisable if you only know him from House. The last episode of the fourth series is also quite simply one of the most magnificent pieces of bittersweet comedy ever made.

Being an ex opiate addict I now have a love-hate relationship with the show. I absolutely love it still, but episodes where House struggles with his addiction can be really damn hard to sit through sometimes to the point where I generally end up shutting it off. Most specifically Broken. That episode KILLED me when it came out because I had JUST gotten clean and sober myself, but just remembering writhing in agony through withdrawals is haunting enough to remember that I'd rather not at all. This was one amazingly well-produced series though. Really glad I clicked on this!

@@MrBrainTucker1079 I agreed. We all have our own problems. Our own history. Same biological lottory system. We can't choose our parents. We can't choose what happened to us. However, the one thing that we can and always can is our own choice and how we choose to be and what we choose to do with what we got. By the way, the series (great as it is) was not written by a broken person. It is written by people who think they understand the broken people and how the broken people may (and MAY NOT) overcome what what they were facing, adjusting, etc. They did a pretty good job at exploring it, testing it, hammering it, pushing it to the limit, and the series was flying quite high for many years, but they crashed it pretty badly at the end, because they didn't know how to fly through turbulances and/or land it. They didn't know how a broken person (or broken people) could figure out and cope and come out pretty extraordinarily at the end. One line was said, "You made me better. And, I hope I made you better too." is true in life. But the writers failed to figure out what that means on screen. Result of not knowing what a real House and Cuddy could have been, come the rating issue and the budget issues that clearly contributed to major down fall and a major character off the show. If @Jesse Tribble think about it, he might agree. Not all extraodinary broken persons ended up like Sherlock or House & Cuddy. They ended up better and more. If the writers would of realized it, maybe they would have ended the show differently and inspired many more broken people to the right place rather than saying "love and human happiness disable the greatness of a extraordinary doctor or a gifted musician." Sadddddd...

@@timothyhartanto I guess I'll be the one to not mince words: It got so much worse, in every conceivable respect. Like...there are parts of this season, at least, that actually kind of work really well. It's different - not necessarily worse, but it clearly had different priorities and they were clearly experimenting in a way that works some times and doesn't at others. I was personally a huge fan of this show as a kid and gave up on it during Season Six, only picking it up again in like 2019. The end of Season Seven...well, the comment you're replying to is a spoiler. That's how the season ends - with House driving a car through Cuddy's home. That's how one of the main characters was written out of the show, the end to one of the show's major narrative arcs; the main character, that lovable badboy we're all supposed to like despite being an asshole, backtracking on all of his character development, and behaving like a teenage incel by lashing out violently in response to rejection. If you look around, you can still find contemporary reviews from the early internet...having actually seen maybe thirty of those early media blogs state that they would no longer be reviewing any episodes of House going forward because there was no point, as their review of that episode, is a big part of why I feel confident enough to say that, no, it was objectively a disaster. Some went into more depth about exactly how the writers had reached this point and why it was stupid; some just abruptly Stopped.

I appreciate "Broken". If only for how [relatively] realistic the madhouse is portrayed. Mine was less luxurious but the important part, how House feels there, is shown almost flawlessly. First, he lusts for freedom, then understands that the more he resists the longer is his stay, which is the cornerstone of being admitted. The phases he goes through there - I know them too well. And his conversations with the doc are very authentic. Also, he didn't have to learn that mental illnesses are very real the hard way, but it worked dramatically, it was a shocking lesson for the audience. Which, certainly, didn't make everyone happy since a good portion of people can't empathize and still thinks that a sick mind can be cured with a walk in the park, optimism, and some labour. Can't say I blame them, it's hard to imagine unless you're sick yourself or have sick relatives. The creators did their research, captured the feel of it all. And you did a great job dissecting it.

I'm not embarrassed to say that as an aimless young adult, I modeled myself after House. It didn't win me more friends (nothing had before anyway), but I liked it. More importantly, I liked myself. As I grew older, I recognized there were a lot of problems with basing your personality after a fictional character, especially one who is as toxic as House, so I changed and I grew up some more. But the core of that person, the relentless pursuit of truth, the refusal to let stupidity win, the irreverence in the face of defeat, and the ability to let go of pain and move on, that has been the best parts of me. And I learned that from this series. Thanks for this analysis. Hope to see the rest of it soon.

I actually did the same thing! I got really sick in my early twenties and started watching it when I couldn’t go to college or really function anymore. I was already pretty bitter and on a shit load of pain meds so it sorta helped me through that time. Then after I got better about 7yrs and a couple near death experiences later, I started to analyze myself and change and could see the flaws in House a lot differently. This show definitely had a huge impact on my life and I was really sad when it ended. I rewatched it recently and the ending is always so sad and somewhat anticlimactic for me...

I'm sort of going through that fase now as young adult, would any of you care to elaborate a little on how your perspectives changed on the character and it's personality and it's influence on your lives over time? Guess I would benefit from the perspective of others who went through something similar
@dillweeds
@dillweeds 3 года назад
@@Zsooltt House lacks a lot of self-awareness in his actions and though he maybe reasonable to a certain extent his actions hurt the people around him. His redeeming quality is that he is good at solving puzzles. But it's arguable if he is a good doctor or not because in real life doctors treat patients and it's not always about solving puzzles. House has plot armor and the people close to him give him a million chances. In our own lives if you are hurting some one else they have no obligation to help or stay. But we inevitably have to find some one to support us unless you are one of those true introverts who doesn't need any one at all and don't feel lonely/depressed(which im not quite convinced exists). We have to learn self awareness so that we aren't being shitty to other people with out knowing it, and if we knew we were being inadequate we have to consider how to to make amends. House may not always be wrong but we are wrong all the time and it's hard to admit. This is a smidge rambley but I hope you can understand.

Man I love this show. I discovered it in my early 20's around when season 3 was airing on TV. I remember going to Blockbuster(remember those kids!?) and renting the season 1 & 2 dvd's and binging them. I did watch the show to the end, but I never bought any of the dvd's past season 6 because that was the end of the show for me as well. For a couple of years I had to deal with a ruptured disc in my back that pressed on my sciatic nerve and made me limp. I went as House for two Halloweens in a row and still have the flame cane. I would pop advil like vicodin.

OH, HELL YES! I'm so into this. I have such complicated feelings for House MD, having found it at 15, when I was a lonely and depressed "gifted kid". House got me through a bad time by making it worse. I'm so happy there's a video essay for it. I will watch and update my comment accordingly. EDIT: I was not left dissapointed - rather, excited and subscribed to your channel. A promising start, already with exceptional editing and writing. I'm so glad to finally have a space (apart from mostly dead forums and fanfiction sites) to discuss house again.

@amalofoto
@amalofoto Год назад
@@Orson2u thank you! And gladly. I was very smart and very weird as a Teenager (feels like that's a comorbidity 😂) and oh so incredibly lonely. I was convinced the only thing that gave me any shred of worth was my smarts and talents, and those things exclusively. I was also quite uncool, and never able to show off my quick wit when it mattered. I had the need to be liked by everyone. The way House pathologically pushed people away might have been toxic and unhealthy, but 15-year old me wished to have even a smidge of that confidence. House was the opposite of my uncool self, while also being super smart, and thus incredibly cool to me. Aspirational, in a lot of aspects. I had a very tough time in school and thinking back I think I was quite depressed and burned out. I clung to everything that might bring me some relief - so when I saw House cutting himself during the Tritter arc to get some relief from his pain... yep, 15-year old me decided that might be a good idea. I might have been very smart, but damn, I was dumb 😂 Well, I was going through some shit, but still. I also internalized some of house's toxic thought patterns, as the aforementioned feeling of being worthless without the special skill one has that sets one apart from others. I wish I had just gone to therapy. 😂 But house (the show) is also just very compelling. Incredibly so. The characters and relationships on that show are fascinating to me, to the extent that I spent the following years reading tons of fanfiction. That gave me some much needed relief from my real life at the time. Looking back at all that, I'm just really glad that that time is over and I'm flourishing at university and have found confidence and the knowledge that worth is inherent, and also friends who love and accept me. I'm very sorry to 15-year old me. I would have been very different had I not watched house at that age, but I can't say if for the worse or better. Both probably 🤷🏻‍♀️ I hope I didn't bore you with all that 😅

I think his explanation is a lie - psychological, a sudden pain in one area overrides you noticing or paying attention to another pain, so you get a break from one pay in exchange for another. It was why he smashed his hand in the earlier scene - I think he went for slicing because you can draw it out more (cut a little more slowly). Or the writers are human and all that - even the best shows have bullshit in them (I mean in terms of the rules of the fiction, not them breaking the rules of real life).

Despite technically being a formulaic hospital drama - its honestly a perfect embodiment and reflection of attitudes and feelings of its audience, when looking at the world in general (not just the medical world). There's a series of poems in the book series of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. A guy writes the most beautiful poetry, and somehow time travel gets involved when his poetry reaches a time earlier than he made the poems, making him famous, and then no reason to write the poems. He ends up getting cooped up and forced to write the "original copy" of the poetry, and there's an argument by critics about if the poetry has any meaning. I’ve already watched Part(s) 1 & 2. No lie, I just rewatched both, hahaha. I say proud, also in-part; because although they are in fact dense (as you stated) I don’t think you wasted the minutes utilized on these. Nor did it lose my attention all throughout. Also, it reminds me of the importance of consistency when it comes to remaining/staying active, especially during seasons such as these. You never know how much these might help someone! It tripped me out; because in times past, i eventually exhausted my searching efforts seeking out more House material. The difference with yours, is that you followed through on a spark/thought. The consistency paid off. Because the passion shines through! You did a great job ensuring that you’re not overdoing the voice-overs, tonality wise. Artist to artist, you did a great job, man! I’m glad that you followed through with all of the synopsis’ information given to us, so intricate. Never forget, that you’re just as important of an Artist, as the Director’s of this series were.
