Hi there, I'm a resident of this county. It's in southern MN, and it's Blue Earth County, the same as the name of the river. Should also note that the store...their livelihood, as it was referred to, is still standing...for now. The owners' childhood home between the cafe and the river is what we see collapsing into the raging water. Not to downplay the seriousness of that event, at all, but luckily, they had time to get many of their belongings and keepsakes out of the house. Hopefully they will not lose their business as well. It's a much-beloved local icon for people in the region to go for a Great burger, tasty sandwiches, and awesome pie, all served with a big helping of that famous "MN Nice" that you hear so much about. :)

@@rona4960 When it first started rerouting around the dam, they could have brought in large sand/earth bags and stopped it while an excavator grabbed and move the debris from the upstream side of the dam to the downstream side allowing the water to run through the gates like it was meant to. I have seen this done many times on levees along rivers and water ways down here. Stop the erosion by any means available!!!

@@VassilkaMorrison-pd7ip This dam was maintained and recently passed inspection. There were plans to either upgrade or remove it after damage from flooding 5 years ago but even if those had been started on they would not have been complete yet.

OP, their business is the building shown at 1:00, I hate to say it, but it looks like water may still cut the bank back far enough to take it too. :(

any excavator with a thumb could have done that.

@@danstrayer111 They actually have one of those on site, but they didn't seem to reusing it. (Probably too slow to track it back and forth.) Thats why I figured a log truck, so that you could pick, and truck out in one shot. The excavator isn't very good for that kind of volume.

An excavator on the concrete dam would only need to move the logs from one side of the dam to the other to allow more water to flow. There is no need to remove the logs from the river. Let them go on flow on down the river. This could have slowed down the erosion that was happening on the bank.

@@josephmay8837 but then the logs will just jam something else up. You don’t really want to kick the problem on down the line.

The dam is still there, however. It hasn't budged and did not fail, and no water over-topped it. Debris stopped-up the water release gates, and the river found a new path around the dam and debris blocking its flow. That is what water does.

@@jimw1615 My friend, don't you think they could put a concrete pole from one side of the river to the other side of the Mississippi with a steel gate? The water would flow through it and collect all these dead trees and this wouldn't happen again. This is what they should consider really in the future. I'm sure the army car engineers could come up with a plan to stop all this debris flowing and hitting in the damn and causing this. Again, I feel sorry for the people there. Maybe if all those dead trees were collected that wouldn't have happened on the side. I wish you all your people good luck there. Thank you. See of course!! They created this "natural disaster". They could have gotten the debris removed to prevent further erosion. Corrupted politicians!!😤

Well remember the news outlets have been claiming the dam was in "imminent danger of collapsing" for 4 days, too.

Did you not notice it wasn't a total collapse? Making it partial at the time it was filmed? Words have meaning clown.
