Don't know if you've watched the whole series or are just picking out episodes but in answer to 'why are they letting him do this?' well, they've learned that trying to stop House do his own thing is a painful, unrewarding experience.

Virtually all people's reactions to everything House: "Why is he doing this? Why are they letting him do this? We (doctors) don't do this." Yes, we mostly know, and that's the point. House is reckless, and that's why we watch the show.

For the best viewing experience of House, don't watch it with the mindset, that it's a medical drama, watch it for what it is, a medical adaptation of Sherlock Holmes. Everything, from the characters, relationships, investigating patient's homes, etcetera, all make far more sense with that context. It also helps with suspending disbelief with the medical inaccuracies and or the insane connections that House makes and the insane amount of information in his head, remembering House is Holmes, Wilson is Watson and Cuddy is a mix match of Lestrade, Mrs. Hudson and Irene Addler.
@Bassmunky26

The great thing is that House is based off of Holmes, whole Sir Aurthur Conan Doyle based Holmes off of one of his doctor friends. So it just came full circle.

Every doctor I've seen react to an episode of House has face-palmed at least once. You're not alone. :-) What's odd, is that while they're all shocked at the unrealistic medical depictions, they also do tend to enjoy the show. I guess shows don't have to be realistic to be enjoyable.

This is the tipping point for House's mental health. Messing with your own brain and pushing it to extremes can come back to bite you in horrifying ways. And Vicodin can have mental side effects...

Oh yay, found another channel with a doctor reacting to House! As someone who has seen this episode (okay, most episodes) multiple times it's always so interesting to watch others react who don't know what's going to happen, especially medical professionals because it really shows how many ridiculous leaps they usually go through on this show to get to every diagnosis they think it is.

4:47 I wonder if this is a Fortysomething reference. A British miniseries starting Hugh, along with Peter Capaldi, where they are doctors at a practice and Peter Capaldi hypnotizes Hugh into squawking like a chicken upon a certain cue.

I like to think House was probably out for a while, so when the scene moved back to reality, Wilson probably went from regular CPR mode, to "wake up! dont die you bastard" mode

When I was 4 my skull was crushed by a horse. I guess I was in shock because I remember the older kids SCREAMING and I thought as a joke I would pretend to be dead (weird, weird kid I know). I slowly closed my eyes, then woke up 3 nights later with half my head shaved. First thing I did was tell my mom I was hungry 🤣 My skull was cracked and pushed in a little, and was pressing on the dura, but the dura was not scratched or torn. So they repositioned the broken pieces (2, I think) which fell into place well, and they expected it to knit and heal quickly because of my age. There was no internal swelling - they did not need to release any pressure. I'm nearly 31 now and just have a big scar that's COMPLETELY hidden by my hair.

@@JessTheMD Oh actually I got several autoimmune diseases but my blood work etc didn't make sense and neither did any of my organs. They sent my file to America, Canada, Germany, England, and Switzerland but even with all of the doctors having conference calls about me no one could make sense of how my body works! Still completely ruins my life, but there's also something kind of cool about being a medical mystery (Obviously the skull injury didn't cause that, I'm just explaining why I'm still far from okay. But I appreciate the thought!)

Some context/reminder for who Amber is: She was a part of the try-outs for House's (second) team. I think she was the last to be cut from it. And at this point of the story she has been dating and living together with Wilson for a while. House and her often bickered over who Wilson chose to spend his free time with: The girlfriend, or the Best Friend (House's only friend). The rest of your questions, are answered in the next episode. Looking forward to it :)

Technically, House was IN A BUS that got hit by...another bus, if I remember correctly. Or maybe something like a garbage truck, I didn't bother paying that much attention. All I know is, if it had been HOUSE who got hit by a bus - either walking or on his motorcycle - then there'd no longer be a House.

A lot of medical dramas show doctors performing precordial thump(which is what i guess what Wilson was doing). It looks cool and gives perfect amount of drama and suspense to the scene. I know its not nearly as good as defibrilation but for this scene it fits.

Precordial Thump was commonly used for a witnessed cardiac arrest way back in the day! Haven't heard of it being used in a couple of decades personally! You could commonly see it being done on the 1970's TV show Emergency!

@JessTheMD
@JessTheMD 8 месяцев назад
Thanks so much!!! Oh boy, it's been a ride to figure out how to do this reaction editing well! I edit everything myself 😊 Basically, I now open up two instances of OBS and record in both of them. One of them is the scene with me in it and the other is just the "media" scene... Then I overlay them and match them up time-wise in my editor (start with lumafusion on my phone, then transfer to my computer into final cut pro x) 😊 I've let out all my secrets!! 😜 .... And since I do all of my own editing and everything, while still working full time, and having a family... I definitely fall off of my hopes of getting a new video up every week. Sometimes that timeline extends to like 2 weeks 🙈

Hi Jess, I thought about the whole House MD series and how it reflects to the opioid epidemic in the US, during the 2000s. Why were the control or laws about prescribing opioids so loose in the US? It's so hard to understand how it could have happened in a developed country. I'm from the EU and I've never been to US, so my impressions could be wrong.
@JessTheMD
@JessTheMD 10 месяцев назад
Honestly, I wonder the same thing. It's insanity to me that it happened. I'm part of the generation of physicians that trained in a time when the opioid epidemic was (is) a well known (major) issue, and the pendulum has swung heavily in the other direction - physicians are way more hesitant to prescribe opiates, particularly for long term pain control/chronic pain. It's a really tough subject, and ideally, the goal is to treat chronic pain while also minimizing risk/poor health outcomes. I don't have a great answer for you. I did just finish watching that Netflix series "Painkiller", and it was quite interesting...

Yeah, when it comes to shows like House, it's best to go in knowing that a ton of it is going to be BS when compared to real-life and accuracy. My head process is to assume it's 90% fictional and 10% accurate (and even then, I'm probably being too generous). But at the same time, these are shows meant to be entertaining and to just be escapism for about 45 minutes per episode. As for why they let House do the things that he does, the best in-canon/character explanation is that he's simply good at his job and they don't want to lose him because his success (aka being right) rate is 99%. But the true answer is that it's entertaining and people are want to see him do crazy stuff. Either that or the people who work there are just idiots (which actually would only prove House right).

Do you have an opinion on oral finasteride & oral minoxidil for hair loss? They're pretty controversial online, with a lot of misinformation floating around. I've been on finasteride for nearly 10 months now. About 1 month in, I noticed puffy nipples, but I read that can happen while being on a 5ar inhibitor. Doesn't seem to have gotten worse since then, no pain or anything. Could it be Gynecomastia?

It’s really hard to say without a physical exam. I would recommend chatting with your doctor about these symptoms you’re noticing! I can’t really give direct medical advice in this type of forum. I’m so sorry! My general opinion on finasteride and minoxidil - I definitely do prescribe it for hairloss! It definitely works in many people 😊

House has always been a hilarious watch. A real doctor would never care in the slightest whether a patient got cured, treated, or even diagnosed. So House committing multiple felonies week in and week out to diagnose and treat patients is beyond ridiculous to where it's even hilarious. Good show, but literally 0 connection with reality at any point ever.
