THIS STORY:
Madame Delphine Macarty LaLaurie was a New Orleans socialite and serial killer who was believed to have tortured and murdered slaves in her household.
THIS CHANNEL:
_________________________________________________________
The Angel face you see is the Haserot, named “The Angel of Death Victorious". The stoic angel is seated on the marble gravestone of canning entrepreneur Francis Haserot and his family. Holding an extinguished torch upside-down, it represents a symbol of life extinguished. Wings are outstretched and the gaze is straight ahead.
IN THE END, DEATH ALWAYS WINS. LEST THE FACES NOT BE FORGOTTEN...
This channel is focused on casually walking and viewing a handful of the thousands of forgotten names and faces at various cemeteries near and afar. Seeing their faces up close. And when able, telling the stories behind their names.
Most graves are unknown and lost to history.
Some are famous.
And some infamous....
....and some with tragic endings.
#graves #cemeteries #death

My mom grew up 3 blocks from the LaLaurie Mansion on Governor Nichols street. She used to tell us stories about things she & her sisters would see & hear when they were playing on the corner in front of that place & it was closed. She said that one day she got really freaked out because she was with her sisters there playing stickball. She looked up for some reason, and there was a little girl wearing an old raggedy flour sack dress sitting on the edge of the roof of the mansion. She had no shoes on & she looked really sad. Mom waved at her but she didn't wave back. Mom turned around to tell her sisters to look up, but when they did, the little girl was gone. She said they used to hear screaming coming from the place, chains rattling and there was a very heavy smell of smoke...like the house was actually on fire. I smelled the same smell several times myself walking by there with my daughter when we would go visit Grandma. My cousin Sean still lives in Grandma's old house.

Among the most famous to own this house was Nicholas Cage, who bought the property in 2006 for $3.4 million, but soon ran into financial troubles. He lost it to foreclosure in 2009. Currently, the home is owned by a Texas businessman and unavailable for public visits.

Um, I was born in the Deep South and grew up in the New Orleans area. I am over 60 years old, and I have never heard my home called the Dirty South. New Orleans is an amazing city with a very diverse culture and some of the most amazing food on the planet, as well as architecture. The city does have crime problems, but of course that is routine with blue cities all over America. So that has nothing to do with it being in the south but rather the lack of competent leadership. Do you call the U.S. Government and western states dirty for their past treatment of Native Americans, and for the Native Americans who slaughtered innocent settlers? Southerners are some of the most polite, friendly, and helpful people in this nation.

Thanks to Spanish and French colonialism antebellum Louisiana had a lot of laws on the books governing how slaves could be treated and forbid many forms of abuse and murder. Society even excepted plantation owner to take care of injured and aged slaves for the rest of their lives. Not trying to whitewash or romanize the period, but if the story of this house of horrors is true, the angry mob proves the attitude of Louisianans in New Orleans toward the torture of slaves at that time.

Love the show, big fan of everything history. New Orleans papers has La Laurie coming back several times to visit family, a party, and to argue about a will. Unfortunately as time went on their horrific crimes no longer mattered. But as most know "You may get away with evil while alive", but at death "Punishment for the evil you do is ETERNAL".

So scary how people will operate such torture chambers right under the noses of everyone. They always seem to be those who are big in the community. Same thing today only now it is human trafficking. They still do it in pretty houses so that others have no clue.

Ron......check out the story of the notorious Patty Cannon and Johnson's Crossroads Tavern located at the extreme SW border of Delaware and just across from Maryland along the Maryland/Delaware transpeninsula line and Mason-Dixon (Delmarva). Her 18th c. house once house stood near the present crossroads and there is a historic marker there. Patty was to be hanged in Georgetown, DE for her slave theft and resale, as well as multiple murders of slaves, including children, and local travelors. She died in prison before the sentence was carried out Her skull was recovered during an excavation and could be seen in Georgetown, DE at various historic museums from time to time. Time frame from around 1820 - 1839 I think.
