House of Leaves: The Horror Of Fiction

What's So Great About That?

House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski encompasses many genres - postmodernism, romance, satire - but my personal catagorisation would be horror. So how does the book use the specific conventions of fiction, specifically written fiction, to explore this?
Thanks for watching, I hope you enjoyed this video essay!
If you have any thoughts on the ideas in this video, or just your interpretation of the film in general, please leave them down in the comments. :)

pssh too much hubbub about nothing at all. I hear nothing about emotion or verisimilitude, i.e. the actual stuff that makes a novel. I've read this thing over and over and am still mystified at how cloying it is: in trying to appear so smart but it's not, anyone seeing this comment right now can write House of Leaves, all you need to do is copy and paste facts or make fictional statements around your college curriculum. That is not a book, that is note taking to prepare for a book. The authors Danielewski wants to emulate were actual writers: pick up anything by Joyce ( I'll wait), one of his short stories alone pack more emotion and horror than this whole book - and we're not even getting into inventiveness yet; don't even mention Pynchon that's blasphemy, Pynchon has skill.
@MrRyanbtw
@MrRyanbtw 5 лет назад
@@myemailaccount3046 i feel like this reading reveals more about you than the book? you're so unwilling to grapple with what the book presents because you're swamped by what you perceive as pretentiousness. instead of thinking about what the presentation of fictitious material contributes in terms of thematic weight or material, it has to be cloying, it has to be the author trying to convince you of their genius. i've read many a solid critique of this novel, but this is... not a good one. dismissing the fake content because it is fake, and not granting it any weight is just ridiculous. most stories don't draw attention to how utterly contrived they are, and all stories are ultimately contrivances with structure. he is not trying to convince you it is real. no one is selling you anything. they're good dogs brent

@@MrRyanbtw I've never seen a solid critique or appraisal of this novel. So right off the bat you're lying. What I've seen is fauning. This book is rubbish. And what's crazy is I like Danielewski, I think the guy is genuine or at least trying to be -> the book has the strivings of being good but ultimately it's a failure, and it's a failure only in that it's amateur i.e. it's juvenile (there's nothing mature about obvious Minotaur metaphor, there's nothing mature about name dropping, it has to lead to something, there's nothing mature about having camille paglia in any work without a critique of sexual personae, I could go on ad nauseam. Infinite Jest this book is not, Jest is a masterclass of skill, it's a book about, among many other things, horror without even trying too hard to convey the horror. That's not to say that I don't like certain sections of this book. But ultimately all the doodads and wonks and sleight of hand baffle gab all stifle the novel, and if the subject matter was passed high school ap phil I'd hate the novel less.

Wonderful video and wonderful book. I own a copy signed by Mark Danielewski. He impishly edited the introductory warning of Johnny's chapter "this is not for you" into a more welcoming "This IS for you". Made the pages slightly less threatening :)

The most interesting review of this book on Amazon is someone who read it while on base during the Iraq War. The book is totally unrelated to war, but he said it will forever be his memory of that time, and there is that connection you mention in this video. Something about the post-Baudrillard state of the iraq war makes it seem weirdly apt. Fantastic video, thank you

this is simultaneously the most intriguing and interesting book but also one of the most intimidating. ive been wanting to read this for years but ive always been absolutely terrified to pick it up because of the excessive amount of footnotes and detective-work the reader is essentially required to do in order to understand.
@squirlmy
@squirlmy Год назад
This is 2 years late, sorry. Actually none of those footnotes and references actually lead anywhere, just to more questions. That's the "horror", even f the universe has no meaning, we're doomed to search for one, and how it parodies academia. It can disappoint, you might stop reading when you figure this out, it's pointless. Like the inex of pages with the word "so", the answer IS "so what";, tracing the references never feeds the itch (some Easter eggs, but nothing meaningful). The author too, seems trapped by the act of writing the book itself!!! It's the curse of self-consciousness.Thebook is, by many different definitions a "house of leaves(pages)

Really lovely, insightful stuff. Read this book around 15 years ago I want to say and it still haunts me to this day. I listened to one particular artist/CD while reading the book and I can't listen to them anymore, it just instantly brings back my disconcerted and unsettled feelings from reading the novel. I remember having to read it with my door open -- which, for a teenager obsessed with her own privacy who constantly kept her door locked, is actually saying quite a lot. An excellent exploration of an excellent novel. Really brought back some memories for me. I love your videos, so please keep it up!

A little aside from your point, but House of Leaves has some of the most delicious prose I've ever encountered. Nothing else I've ever read stays so firmly unpretentious, and yet has twice the meaning and profundity in half the space. "We all create stories to protect ourselves" is a great example. Something about that line is so perfect, and so fittingly unnerving. The entire book was a joy to read, as much as it hurt my brain. I don't think reading anything else has ever caused me to voice "oh this is GOOD" out loud- certainly not nearly as many times as House of Leaves did. I can only hope to ever create a work so musically mundane. Anyway yeah, it's really good.

The Doctor Who parallel is interesting because the influence ended up coming full circle in Moffat's first season with the doors that didn't use to be there in Amy's house etc and the non-euclidian spaces that implies. It's very much played as horror in those episodes.

This sounds right up my street! Two of my favourite stories ('The Damned' by Algernon Blackwood and 'Afterward' by Edith Wharton) creep me out something rotten, despite nothing actually happening. I also got a strong HPL feeling from this book and I love how well the quote "We all create stories to protect ourselves" sums up what it is about. Especially considering that in my opinion the actual author of The Navidson Record was Johnny Truant. Not to say that The Navidson Record did a very good job of protecting Johnny or his sanity.

It´s weird how incredible EFFECTIVE this gooddamn book is - not despite, but because of all of the postmodern shenanigans. I´ve read the german translation ten years ago, and I still sometimes have nightmares in which I´m trapped in an endless maze of doors and corridors (I can tell that it comes from the book because of the doorknobs: The ones in the house are made out of glass. I somehow memorized that detail and now I now that shit´s about to get fucked up when I encounter plain doors with glass door knobs in my dreams :P). House of Leaves is postmodernist literature done right: The Form is not just an artsy-partsy sham to impress literature critics, it really adds a layer of horror to it it which I have never found in another novel so far. BTW: Really good video!

I first heard about this book from everymanHYBRID, and your description of house of leaves really reminds me of it.

I've considered reading House of Leaves on and off for a few years, have never felt enough motivation to take the plunge into a book that seems so disorienting, but this video has convinced me it's worth the read. Thank you :)

I hope it doesn't disappoint! And you can definitely just enjoy the book on a narrative level and not worry too much about how it all ties together.

I don't know if you're familiar with the horror webseries Marble Hornets here on RU-vid, but your videos on HoL and The Babadook make me think you could do a hell of a good essay on that show.

Cool, I think you'd like it! Be advised that it's spread across two different channels (and a Twitter account), so here's a playlist with all the relevant videos in the proper order: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Wmhfn3mgWUI.html

Great video for a quite unique book I've had the pleasure to read 14 years ago and been still haunted by it! To all of you who wish to read this book but feel intimidated by its complexity: you should read it. It is not an easy read but it's surprisingly playful if you're able to let yourself get lost. It creates a rather unsettling experience. I've read my fair share of horror stories, but this is actually the only one during which I once felt the urge to look upon my shoulders although I was reading it in a public space, surrounded by people and in plain daylight.

I don't understand how you have such few views/subs. Quality unfortunately doesn't equal popularity :( Keep up the work! I've discovered some interesting stuff from your channel!

This made me think of 'Spares' by Michael Marshall Smith, where part of the story takes place in 'the gap', a bizzare alternate world which exists in the gaps between objects. Would recommend it to anyone who enjoys house of leaves. It's a much lighter and less complex read, but for me fulfills many of the same needs for unknowable horrors and general weirdness.

Thank you very much! I actually learnt by making fan videos when I was a teenager. It was a great (if a bit unconventional) way to test things out in a low risk environment. :)

One aspect of postmodernism, even from beyond the book itself, is this: On TV Tropes, links to other pages always appear highlighted in blue. On the TV Tropes page for House of Leaves, _every single instance of the word "house" is a link to another page- .
