In Mount Vernon, Ohio, lived Tina Herrmann with her two children. When they all vanished, including the neighbour, with a startling scene left behind, the investigation began. It led to Matthew Hoffman, who lived in a house covered with leaves. And something even more disturbing was done to the bodies.

It's very mind boggling and sad that the only person really interested was the person she sold her labor to who would notice her being missing the most. Not saying they didn't build camaraderie on the job or that her consistent work ethic didn't help, just sad the person who noticed her missing and went out to check what was up was the person who needed her labor and it not being there was a big factor of the case being solved.

What's really sad is after the ordeal she had been through, Sarah went to live with her father and stepmother in November 2010. In May 2013, Sarah said that her father and stepmother, Larry and Tracy Maynard, had assaulted her. According to court records, Sarah told investigators that her father punched her in the back on May 3, and, five days later, her stepmother kicked her down a set of stairs at the family’s home. The parents received counselling and charges were dropped because Sarah refused to go through more trauma by testifying in court against them. Her maternal grandmother was given custody and said Sarah was doing well. Imagine doing this to your daughter after she had already been through so much it makes me angry.

Oh my god that's awful. I just came to write a comment about how awful it would be to be murdered and your body dismembered. But getting kidnapped, watching your family get murdered and then being stuck in some psycho's house full of leaves and being sexually assaulted is 1000 times worse. To have to live with those thoughts and trauma the rest of your life would be insane. BUT THEN you mention she was abused even further by her father and stepmother??? Wtf! Poor girl! I hope she's currently doing way better in life. She's been though so much!

Youre being unreasonable,. Did you want them to break the door down? Lol. They can't read minds, see through walls. People have choice, autonomy and constitutional rights, including the right to not answer the door to police, to quit jobs with no word, to disappear. There was no suspicion yet. How many jobs have you ghosted? Me, a couple. I'd be pissed if my door gets knocked down by police because I quit Dairy Queen. Now an option could have been for the fiance to unlock the door, I heard he lived there. Or the father to file missing persons and seek emergency court order himself, or by police, for a search warrant. But truth comes to light. And it did.

My co-worker just didn't show up one day. It was kind of a big deal; we were all worried. Two of us went to his house and knocked, asked around, etc. It was rather scary, really - we had no idea what possibly could have happened to him. Turned out he was arrested on suspicion of a DUI and had no way to contact anyone until late the next day when he went to court. The whole thing was stupid; he'd met a friend at a bar to make a purchase of some spare parts for his motorcycle. He didn't even have a single drink - but a cop saw him leave the bar and ride his bike three blocks to his home, and arrested him in his driveway. He was acquitted of all charged, and we were happy to have him back at work.

this story is about 97% accurate, the leaves were in the house for sound proofing Sarah's screams, he also camped out in the wooded area directly behind Sarah's house for 3 days because she was the target from the very start' Mathew had two large dogs that were found in the house mutilated in the same fashion that the bodies were in indicating he did this to practice on them for when he carried out this terrible crime on the family, I know this because I lived less than a mile from where the bodies were found plus my daughter knew Matthew' my wife worked with Stephanie and my wife's cousin lived directly across from his house, was not a break in gone bad he followed them home from Walmart or other store then planned it all. 👍

I love you & your channel, but you left out a couple things (I really feel are important facts about the case & help paint a clearer picture): he camped over night across the street from the house in the woods the night before the murders, also he came with a K-Bar military style tactical knife & attacked them, he went after the murders to get thicker bags & tarps because shopping bags weren't really thick enough to put body parts into to transfer to 'his tree' & that's when he went to Walmart, when they found the mom's truck he happened to be nearby on a bike & was stopped & questioned by an officer who actually got his information & it was reported that the officer saw the Walmart video & he identified him- but the Toyota Yaris part confirmed the I'd & an address, & finally to my favorite fact (if you can actually say that about this sick disturbing case) when he confessed to where the bodies were it was under the agreement- by the prosecutor no less- that they absolutely not chop down the tree that he put the bodies into. Which is why, even after signing an 'agreement' to not cut it down (which they tore up), the tree was ordered cut down immediately after retrieving them from it. The tree obviously meant something significant to him, he spent a lot of time with it- which is why cutting it down, is honestly the only thing that I like about this case. Also I completely agree with you on the BS about the burglary- it was the only thing he ever constantly repeated- I think that he was targeting the daughter all along. Ok, I just wanted to add a few details I felt were really important, but left out. My thoughts and prayers go out to both women's families. I really love your channel, please keep it up!!!

When I was single and living with my son I had cats and I always made it a habit to stand in the doorway and look at my cats to see what their behavior was. If they ran up to the door to greet me, then everything was fine; but if they looked at me from a distance and then scuttled off as if in fear then something wasn't right. My two little dogs did the same thing when someone had been throwing rocks at my house and broke a window. You watch your pets behavior, they'll give you a clue. Most of them do it to stretch out as much content as they can, and it's like if you just tell the story, it's what we are here for. Also, I don't like most of the true crime channels on here that make it about the creepy details or speak in a creepy voice to make it scarier. To me, the stories and details are creepy enough, the fact it is true is scary enough.. you don't gotta do all that. Feels almost like an insult to our intelligence as viewers. Makes me love channels like that chapter all the more.

Of course, you never know if the dude was lying or not but he lived in a cell nearby this guy and would talk to him from time to time. He said that Matt told him that he believed he was sacrificing people to the trees and that he had killed people in Colorado too. He also said that he witnessed him building snowmen and jumping through them over and over one day in the prison yard. It was an interesting interview, and he said this dude is very clearly nuts.

Perhaps you can begin to feel out what the next thing will be, something which occurs predictably. Maybe it’s a gentle walk with a friend of a Monday morning followed by a coffee, or sitting with an elderly neighbour for a cuppa every Thursday afternoon; maybe going to the library to return and loan a new book every Saturday. Something which you enjoy, excites you, makes you feel you have a purpose, and isn’t too overwhelming, just challenging enough. Little by little as these become established parts of your routine, and you feel all the good emotions and social connection from each thing, it will begin to fill out your life. Our lives only become richer for it. Be kind to yourself.

This is part of family of mine, Thanks Mike for telling it. I always wondered why I haven't heard the story yet and now in the last week this is the second person that that has told the story. It was very heartbreaking the funeral was the absolute worse there was TV Crews everywhere fights starting to break out it was just a mess. You would think it would be time for family members to grieve, but the media showed up and tried to question everybody at a funeral. That is exactly what happened, I didn't understand having a funeral for love one and trying to walk away from reporters and them not leave you alone. Wth. I have heard Sarah is doing good, but it's something that will always be with us.. Rest in peace Tina, Stephanie and Cody. I'm sure your hitting home runs up there bud.

@Eily Bergin Are you sure that was real though? Danny Gonzalez did a video a couple of years ago about a somewhat similar radio show where someone who was ghosted calls in and the show calls the ghoster and it always turns out that the ghostee did something extremely weird and that's why they were ghosted. Anyway he discovered it's 100% fake and they even hire paid actors to play the ghoster and ghostee.

My colleague is married to a Psychiatrist, he works with those who have been convicted for or have a propensity for criminal intent & escalating behaviour affecting/ compromising others. Love your show Mike. I only wanted to say that the presence of leaves covering the ground floor are not indicative of a parafilia such as dendrofilia. They were only used as noise or sound isolation, so that the young girl's screams and shouts for help would not be heard from the basement. That's why only the floor is covered with them, together with the walls of the bathroom where bags of leaves are covering the walls. That was the only room the young girl had access to from the basement.
