The way Rhaenys and Melys looked at each other bc they knew it was their last moment together, really gutted me💔

*She didn't retreat because the battle had not been won. She came to protect the castle. Cole's army was still there and Vaghar was still alive. To retreat would mean you abandoned those in the castle fighting in your name!*

Rhaneys went out like a WARRIOR! NO retreat NO surrender ... strapped in ... till the death! Think about it she took that so her family her daughters, or grands wouldn't have to ... RESPECT QUEEN!!!

There is one thing A LOT of people really seems to miss. Aemond / Cole didnt tell him anything about their plan or trap. Aegon was convinced Vhagar stayed in the city and there is only gonna be small siege without any black dragon. He wanted to help them and instead he got caught right in the middle of green's trap while on on top of that aemond instead of helping him not only waited he even attacked him. Sorry but there is nothing you can do in that scenario if your own team is against you. Sunfyre is beast considering his young age but it's literally against meleys, dragon twice (if not more) his size and more experienced

I’m glad y’all got it. People keep asking why Rhaenys turned back and she went out there to defend that stronghold. If she gave up again and ran from a fight they would not respect that.

The book mentions that Aegon had a close bond with his dragon Sunfyre, who was the most beautiful dragon ever seen in the world. You can see it in the way Sunfyre affectionately but gently butts his muzzle against Aegon's chest, and Aegon smiles happily. I think Aegon loves Sunfyre more than anyone else.

You guys are some of the few reactors that I've watched today, that understood WHY Rhaenys didn't just fly back to Dragonstone when she had the chance... Thank you for paying attention!

Like how he points to his brother all nonchalant with the dagger then simply walks away as his brother is literally sizzling, you can hear it.

Viserys's last words literally do not matter, Otto and the rest of the council were planning on killing Rhaenyra anyway.

Its not just bc of the brothel situation, aegon has always bullied aemond, even since they were kids

They put Aegon on the throne against his wishes, just to tell him he’s a disappointment who needs to sit around and no nothing. I honestly feel for Aegon, nobody has has ever cared for him or tried to show him the way…the only living being that truly loves him is Sunfyre, and I hope they delve deeper into their bond in the future. Aegon and Sunfyre’s connection is one of the most fascinating aspects of the book.

Aemond shooting down his brother was premeditated after that brothel scene. That was not a matter of if, but when. Especially when Aemond and Otto had that "talk" about how Aegon can't keep himself in control.

Sunfyre is such a good boy. He got his stomach torn, still flew, went for the neck, and turned to land on said chest to save his rider.

A lot of people overlook that these dragons have rider lineage and some of them had partners/lovers as riders and now they're having to fight each other....

I know the Aegon the conquerer misunderstanding feels like why the war started, but it's not. The war started because they did not want a woman on the throne. They were going to proceed with the usurping after viserys regardless of alicent. Just thought to clarify lol

I think Rhaneys also knew that if she bailed, it would fuck up Rhaenyra’s spot. Like if you align with the Queen and you can’t count on her team and her dragons coming to help and commit 100%, then what’s the point? Just align with the side with the bigger dragon and army at that point if Team Black is going to bail as soon as Aemond and Vhagar show up

I've seen a LOT of GoT & HotD reactors and you guys are unequivocally one of the most thoughtful reactors on RU-vid. It's like I'm in the room with you guys the way you touch on every important moments, metaphors and character developments that the show leaves me stewing in after each episode. Thank you for sharing your passion with us! P.S. I'm a book reader for both GoT & HotD and can confirm that reading it and watching it are entirely different experiences. E.g., the music! I feel like Rhaenys wanted to die. She thinks her son is dead, her daughter is definitely dead, and she knows that her husband has another child from an affair. She's just tired. She figured, " If I take out Vhagar, I win. If I die, I die a warrior's death "

RIP Rhaenys, I knew it was coming because of the book but it still hurt to see it play out on screen. Aemond was totally trying to kill Aegon, he would've put him out of his misery in the end if Cole hadn't been there.

You have to admire the the trap laid out by Cole and Aemond - had Aegon not interfered, Rhaenys and Meleys would have been taken out with very few losses (Most of the forces present under the King's army were snatched from Rhaenyra, so a bigger loss for her). Interesting to see Criston Cole's devotion to Aegon as he was the only one to race to his fallen King, whereas we see another parallel of Daemon and Aemond, in that he is a 'rogue prince' and behaving just like Deamon did to Viserys in Season 1.

Respect for Meleys and Rhaenys. They were tearing up Aegon and Sunfyre, before Aemond and Vhagar showed up.💯

Aemond got his get back, he’s going to be a problem. I was pissed when Rhaenys died but she had that soldier’s heart.

That last look her dragon gave her before they looped back around was heartbreaking. They communicated without having to talk out loud and even then she always whispered to her dragon. The last look meant were here to do the damn thing and they went out like warriors. Much respect for both of them.

It was funny seeing Alicent go in on Aegon, but I don't get why she's so frustrated, she's the one who wanted him on the throne knowing he wasn't fit for it.

Always remember the portion of dragons on each side. Team Green only has four dragons but Vhagar is the real problem. Even if she couldn't kill Vhagar, severely injuring her is significant because maybe then one of the smaller dragons on Team Black could defeat her later. At the end of the day, all dragon riders are soldiers, no matter how high born. A soldier cannot abandon his post and a dragon rider shouldn't just abandon a fight, especially in this case. The battle was to take the castle. Even with Sunfyre and Aegon down, Aemond/Vhagar were still roaming. Rhaenys/Meleys went to protect the castle, no matter who was there.

Aemond did not bait his brother into coming, nor did he make a plan with him. If you recall, when Aemond saw Aegon fly overhead, he was pissed. Aegon was a fly in the ointment, not a planned conspirator. Also, Aegon was happy to see Aemond and Vhagar because he was losing to Rhaenys and Meleys. He had no idea Aemond was going to be there, but he was relieved to see him because he thought he was saved.

Prince Aemon, Rhaenys' father, was also killed in a military campaign. (he was the rider of Caraxes before Daemon, while his brother Baelon the Brave, father of Daemon and Viserys, rode Vhagar, and Baelon's sister-wife Princess Alyssa rode Meleys). Sadly, when a dragon changes riders, old alliances are apparently relegated to the past in favor of the current rider's desires.

Losing Rhaenys broke me. I was in tears. She's one of my favorites. I should've known 😅. The connection with her dragon and how they looked at each other at the end. Fighters and protectors until the end! The Queen that never was! Truly an honorable Queen! 😓💔

The fact that Vhagar and Meleys were ridden previously by Baelon (Daemon and Viserys’ dad) and his wife Alyssa (Daemon and Viserys’ mom). Vhagar was also ridden by Rhaenys’ daughter, Laena.

What makes F&B interesting is how Martin wrote it. They’re not POV chapters unlike the GoT books. Written by in universe characters years after the Dance took place, so it makes even the reader have to take the info with a grain of salt because theirs different accounts of what happened.

Rheanys was the most intelligent, honorable, and level headed character I’ve seen in the entire GOT franchise. She was the realest one that ever was! She’s my queen for life! Also……DO NOT DRINK AND DRACARYS!!!!

Aemond didn't plan it. When he saw Aegon show up, Aemond snarled angrily and thumped his saddle. Aegon showing up was very much not the plan. But let nobody say Aemond doesn't know how to call audibles.

Harrenhall has strong influences from the old gods. House Blackwood still follows the Old Gods as one of the few if not only houses outside the North to do so. The Three-eyed Crow in the original Game of Thrones show is a Blackwood. House Blackwood is on of the houses that is nearly on par with the Great Houses for it's importance to the story. All the stuff going down at Harrenhall and with Alys Rivers/Daemon should probably be taken as similar to the mystical side of things that happened to Bran and Jon Snow. Magic is real. The blood of Wierwood trees are soaked into the walls of Harrenhall. Rhaenys was there to protect Rooks Rest. If she left, the Greens would call Rhaenyra a child killer who won't protect your castle. More people would cite that as a reason to follow Aegon. Having a map with the houses on it for reference isn't a bad thing. It helps to keep track of the many, many moving parts.

The thing about Fire & Blood is the book isnt traditional canon bc it was written from 3rd party biased maester accounts decades after the actual events, so the changes are moot. GRRM has stated that the Show is the true canonized story for HoTD 🎉

I hope they stop skipping over immediate reactions and let the characters grieve. George did so good writing the outline of Daemon’s kids in Fire & Blood, I really hope they get more screentime. I like how he paralleled them to the Stark kids with Baela/Arya Rhaena/Sansa Aegon/Bran Viserys/Rickon and even Harwin’s son Jace with Jon but Daemon is so different from Ned 😂😂 Rhaena’s egg is supposed to be pink I hope they don’t change that and actually give her a pink one that’s the only dragon I was looking forward to. She named the pink one Morning to juxtapose Baela’s Moondancer and I thought it was so cute

Rhaenys was my favorite character on this show. She seemed to be the only one who really had the wisdom needed after Viserys died. RIP Queen that never was. Triple OG, boss, warrior, triple OG OG status achieved!!

Now imagine having all the dragons intact, even larger & more powerful, plus a load of riders descended from the bloodline or Rhaenys, Daemon, Aemond etc, all present for the white Walker incursion 200 years later…

In the books Aegon and Sunfyre had literally one of the closest bonds of all dragon riders who ever existed.. Poor boy, poor dragons don't deserves all this family drama. Honestly, this season is owned by Tom Glynn-Carney. Even when Aegon was powerless in the small council scene, he totally owned the scene. It’s bizarre because the writers clearly want the audience to like Team Black more than Green, but they made the Greens way more interesting to watch. Rhaenyra spends basically all her screen time wringing her hands and being indecisive, Daemon is off having a tantrum in the middle of nowhere and doesn’t have much character beyond “I’m angry”, and Rhaenys kind of just stands around looking smug/condescending. (except for the showdown ofc, RIP Meleys and Rhaenys)

Great reaction and I am glad someone understands why Rhaenys did what she did! She was gonna fight to the end not fly away and be craven. Those looks between her and Melys was them saying goodbye. I also feel like they took comfort in each other in those last moments when they locked eyes. Also poor Sunfyre. He is the goodest boi and he even did his best to protect Aegon. I don't want to spoil anything but man the next episodes will be unexpected and crazy!

Your commentary is funny as hell....'"He's going to know by the big toe what happened."....but, "Man playing Game of Pipes" had me out Anyway, Melys was the largest dragon for Team Black, so I think it was their best defense against Vaghar. Although she may not have won, Rhaneys needed to hurt Vaghar as much as possible, and she did some damage that's why she kept turning back. Also, Aemond can ascend to the throne because Aegon no longer has an heir. If Aegon is dead (don't think he is), the war wouldn't necessarily end. Aemond would just take his place and Rhanerya would still be fighting for the throne, so taking him out would be beneficial. I also don't think Aemond was planning to kill Aegon or going after him like you all are saying. He had a plan with Cole to lure out a member of team Black and take that person out (hopefully Rhanerya or her heir Jace). Just because Aegon was in the way he wasn't going to change the plan. The issue of constant disrespect from Aegon towards Aemond definitely made burning Aegon up a sweet plus.

I believe Rhaenys was of the mindset that even if she died, at least she can wound Vhagar in the process. Everyone knows Vhagar is a problem purely because of her size. If Rhaenys could damage Vhagar enough to keep Vhagar out the war, death would have been worth it for her. Rest in peace Princess Rhaenys Targaryen. She died a true dragon-rider's death.

Here’s the thing, I didn’t read the books either. But there was an episode of GoT where Joffery spoils how this story ends so unfortunately I’ve known how this ends since the show started 😓

Sooooo Alicent drinking plan T and her husband only died weeks ago? And I see she right back to the mental abuse on her child who she didn't raise to be a king but wanted him to be seen as a king. Her and Cole belong together truly. Vicerys ruined everything marrying this broad.

Rhaenys couldn't retreat, she was doing what her Queen commanded her to do and was willing to die to fulfill her duty. One thing I can say with full confidence if she had agreed to go with Daemon to attack Aemond even with Vagar they would've whooped his ass. Aemonds only advantage in a straight up1v1 is size and endurance of Vagar.

Book reader here, this particular battle was done so much better than the book! The personal character drama involved made it so beautiful to watch!

Rhaenys had so many opportunities since last season. The monster under the floor during Aegon's coronation. The chance to double team Aemond with Demon while Her Grace was MIA. The two opportunities she turned back to fight.

It's like a large budget film. The dragon battle and build up to it was Top tier. Probably my most favorite HOTD/GOT episode ever

I think the reason Aegon is so upset about not being listened to is because as Corlys once said "History doesn't remember blood, it remembers names." If he sits back and does nothing all everyone will speak about is how great Cole was in battle and how formidable Ameond was on Vhagar - just like they were saying at the council meeting before he left. He will be forgotten in history if he cannot make a notable contribution. I actually felt bad for him. He didn't want this, he never did. They never even trained him secretly to do the job correctly if they wanted him to have it. And now they belittle him for not knowing enough. He only started wanting to be King during the coronation because the people applauded and praised him, something he never got at home from his family. Alicent is a terrible mother. She didn't even comfort him when his son died and now when she actually speaks to him it is only to make him feel useless and worthless. I know people say that is because she got that from her father but that's not true because other people can go through those same experiences and choose to be much better as parents than their own parents were to them. Simply because they understand how bad it made them feel growing up in a household like that - they overcompensate for it. She is cruel because she wants to be nothing more.
