I cannot believe we got a scene of the Blackwood-Bracken rivarly. And we got to see how it's gonna continue with the kid killing the son. I was cheering so hard for this kid to do something. I cheered even harder when he did!
It was really interesting seeing how Otto's plan backfired on him in this episode. I felt he was the most like Littlefinger or Varys of the cast so far, so I wondered what those 2 would have done differently in his stead. I think those 2 would have survived this by having someone else deliver the news to the king, instead of them delivering the message personally. That way, they would have been shielded from any posisble consequences while still reaping the rewards. Otto exposed himself too much with his gambit with Alicent and then this.
True, but he clearly didn’t think The King would react the way he did, Otto was planning for Viserys who he knows very well. & he wouldve been proven correct had Renherya not intervened. A big miscalculation on his part!
@@TommyDidads A slight miscalculation but really what he planned has already been achieved, Alicent is now producing heirs for the throne. To potentially over throw Rhaenyra and elevate House Hightower even further.
Well even after he delivered the news, King Viserys still wanted Otto to remain hand. It was only because of Rhaenyra's insistence that he got fired. It seems to me like Otto's main mistake was underestimating Rhaenyra, which he has now done several times
I think that while he's certainly a calculated schemer like those two, he does genuinely believe it's his duty as Hand to deliver these sorts of things to the king
I love VIserys' character development. He started as a yes man. Now he is striking a balance between listening to counsel and executing his duty as a king. Rhaenerya knocked some sense into him. I also like how no one is a saint here, not even Rhaenyra.
Rhaenyra did nothing wrong. Her uncle whom she loves did whatever and she discovered sex drive for the first time I dont blame her for anything that happened that night. And when it was known and she lied shamelessly and got people even innocent people in serious trouble it may not have been ethical but it is the most logical choice. That’s my two cents.
@@ezpz4646 I agree although I do think there’s a case to be made in saying that she kind of took advantage of Ser Criston. There’s a big power imbalance there and she was putting him in a lot of danger, as anyone finding out would probably result in his summary execution. Homie couldn’t really say no either she’s the princess.
@@ezpz4646 I am not questioning her morality. (Even Viserys was not surprised when he hears Rhaenyra was in a pleasure house). Just her lies. It definitely was the right move to save her own ass, but she did move against Otto, the second-most important figurehead of the realm, and lied through her teeth. Telling the truth might have driven Viserys to cover for her. She has already set a political domino in motion. Although Otto does have his plans, it might not have been wise for Viserys to move against him, a known schemer. Rhaenyra, by lying, did indirectly move against her father too (remember that this is a feudalistic society where blood, family, and word matter to an unrealistic degree). She put him and the realm at risk, which is why Viserys reminded her of her responsibility. I understand that she has raging hormones, but she may not actually be a good human, which is what the show is trying to convey.
Not even rhaenyra? The more we see that spoiled child the more we are certain she does not qualify to be a queen, she would not even qualify as a wife. All her arc is to be spoiled and act against her father. Neither demon nor renny should held any power and that is exactly why there will be chaos
Grace Randolph has a theory that looks correct to me and is that Deamon saw innocence and love in her eyes and he couldn't use her as he was planning because he actually cares for her. But when his brother confronted him he saw the opportunity and lied to him (he is a gray character after all).
@@thegreatid3595 he loves his brother but that doesn't stop him from doing what he wants. I think that's why George loves Deamon so much. And Matt is doing a great job with this character for sure.
im so glad Alicent is still defending and protecting Rhaenyra! she seems to truly love her and is trying to do whats best for her. And Rhaenyra is back to being ok with Alicent
The final scene between Viserys and Rhaenyra was awesome. Viserys says, "The truth doesn't really matter. Only perception." Then Rhaenyra talks about the double standards between males and females when it comes to having sex. I'm going to miss Paddy and Milly once they exit this show. Viserys really stood out again for me. Soft king? Sure. But good man and also a complicated one. Let's be real, Daemon and Rhaenyra do act like reckless brats and Viserys is juggling parenting between them. If you watch Cobra Kai, Viserys is a lot like Amanda LaRusso. The only sane person in the show. The only one who acts like an adult and is trying to avoid conflict. But Daemon and Rhaenyra are rebels. They want excitement and drama. This will only lead to bloodshed.
Agreed, i kinda feel bad for viserys. There's always something to bit him at the back, he's like cursed to forever dealing with the shenanigans of his family lol
Daniel is justified though. He's not seeking excitement. The person who tried to ruin his life is back and you can't really expect him to let that go. If you rewatch part 3 you would understand why he can't just let it go. I was actually upset with Amanda for not understanding why he is so focused on Silver and I'm glad Jessica explained why because she was just so oblivious. Same thing goes for Kreese. In season 1 yeah, he was overeating with Johnny but definitely not Kreese or Silver
🐧 Matt as a Daemon is all bombastic and charismatic, while Paddy is more relatable. In these 4 episodes - he showed such a great range of emotions, excellent job.
On the other not much changed, since a witness and the actual perpetrator was not enough to convince for the obvious because someone said so :D next step it would be Rhaenyra to accuse Daemon for assault and harassment :D But I agree on Viserys.
Daemon's reaction to Rhaenyra getting into it is very interesting. For one side, he's surprised because she actually liked it but in the other side, his "impotence" takes another hit on him because he wasnt able to perform. This is said in the "Inside the episode" of this one and it is reference for that same problem that he had in episode 1. Very good writing and build up to it
Damn. At first I saw it as her calling Daemon’s bluff and that’s why he got pissed, even though the game of thrones is like a chess game there were some poker game moments
Yeah I didn't read it that way. Daemon is one of the most multifaceted characters in the history of Westeros. He is highly ambitious, and probably planned to take Rhaenyra's maidenhead to force Viserys into marrying her to him. However when the moment came, he found he couldn't do that to her niece, at least not for the wrong reasons, as there is some genuine affection between the two. He then decided to try going on with the plan anyways during the "morning chat" with the king, because why not? He is the chaos incarnate, and I'm loving every moment of it.
@@jacksonperez5615 at first, I thought so as well, but after I watched the inside the episode where they talk to the directors and producers it was clear that this is what they went for.
Im really enjoying it right now. There are moments of true humanity, the cringy bullshit of D&D is gone, the pacing is perfect and realistic, when big things happen for the characters, you really feel it. Its realism in a fantasy world, what peak Game of Thrones felt like, great stuff, I hope they keep it going.
I love how they take the time to address the passage of time. I hated how armies and people in general started apperanlty freaking telsporting places by s4 of game of thrones.
4:00 what was interesting and cool to me is that before Hightower told the King we see a scene of him taking it in, the performance drives home the idea that he actually isn't getting pleasure from telling the king this information- in all likelihood he knew the king wouldn't react well and might take it out on him... Hightoward is conniving and self-interesting, but It's ironic cus I do think he was actually dreading telling Vasyris this information- again, probably because he knew it was gonna be 50/50 wether or not it would burn him or help his standing/plans, and I think he only took the risk because not telling him or letting things as they are would've been a higher risk. my point is, we see Otto Hightower subtly manipulate and deliver info that benefits him, and compared to all those times, this one seemed different- this one, we see him heavily contemplate what looks to be a move he seems 'forced' into.
I agree that he did contemplate this particular information, and yes he did know Viserys wouldn't take it well. But I dont agree there was a higher risk if he kept quiet. He's gotten so invested in wanting his grandson named heir that even the risk of Viserys's wrath seemed worth it. He could have stayed quiet and held the information for a bit longer, he could've started rumours about it or had someone else tell the king instead. He was too eager, delivered the message to the king the very next morning....backfired completely
@@emekamonyei2158 idk about that, to me Otto Hightower has shown he is capable of patiences, he weathers the storm and waits for the right timing (at least- for what he considers right timing), I think the risks for him waiting was that Rhaenyra and Daemon together really could put in jeopardy his plan- he needed Viserys to know as soon as possible so he could act and make sure they don't get together/marry (part of Daemon's plan seemed to have been to create said rumors, forcing Viserys to marry them due to Rhaenyra's reputation being put into question, so with more time to spread said rumors and perhaps another attempt- Daemon's plans might have worked out that way with more time, and Viserys would only be able to have them wed). So there's that risk, but there's also the fact he likely knew Viserys wasn't gonna believe the rumors- had it not come from the hand himself. He knew he'd first kill the Messangers then accept such accusations. So no, I don't think he told Viserys out of eagerness or pride, I think in his mind, it was a flip of the coin, he was not comfortable with it but in his mind It was his best move or his only move. atleast that’s what I got from that silent moment were we see him by himself before telling the king- there’s no hint of joy or excitement, it seems more so ‘dread’ or just ‘pondering’. (plus- while he is looking for ways to benefit himself, I think he's been playing the long game for a while because he trusts that the people really won't accept Rhaenyra as queen, and one way or another, be it Viserys changing his mind, civil war, manipulation or 'incidents', Aegon will be king- but with Daemon's radical move, a move that might better secure Rhaenyra's spot as queen in the eyes of the realm and place Daemon as king, he was forced to act. I'm glad Otto Hightower isn't the hand of the king anymore, but I also think it's ironic that the king "saw" him and his 'self-interest nature' when he was not actually being particularly deceitful but rather when he was delivering very unpleasant news as they were. I like the consistency in the character writing, Viserys is a king who bases his actions heavily on emotion, if it weren't for this event, I doubt he'd ever feel compelled to remove hightower as hand, in fact- he still needed Rhaenyra to also confirm what we all know of Otto and what Daemon already told him, Viserys might not have even done it if Rhaenyra didn't out-right request it from him. )
@@emekamonyei2158 I think it was both shocking for him, since Viserys is not only his king but in many ways his close friend (even if he did scheme to get Viserys to fall for Alicent). And well, he knew this information will hurt Viserys, but i think he also knew it would look as if he was scheming to get Aegon to be namned heir (exactly as Viserys assumes). I think he does obviously scheme to get Aegon to be namned heir, but he did not intentionally have her followed to "catch her" in the act etc, this truly came as a schock to him. His scheming isn't as nasty as Littlefingers, in the third episode he simply tried to tell Viserys to have Aegon marry Rhaenyra for political reasons (which on paper is not bad..... for Targaryens atleast). So i think he does want to scheme, but not in an "unethical" way. Atleast not yet.
Watching this episode after watching RoP was like drinking a tall glass of cold water on a hot summer day. The dialogue alone is so much superior on this show not to mention the character development is amazing.
@@jeffdaman6969 i like RoP for what it is. What it is *not* is anywhere in the same league as HotD. One treats you like an adult, the other assumes you eat crayons for breakfast
I do not even watch Rings of Power cause it does not look interesting. I have been watching a lot of non western shows lately like sweet home, squid game etc House of the dragon is the only western show I am currently enjoying.
Damn...saw a different side to Rhaenyra this episode 😳 even Daemon was taken aback by how much she was into it. He "woke her dragon" you might say, I'm guessing he expected her to be submissive but perhaps he had a conscience last minute and didn't want to deflower her after all. You never know what he's up to.
I don't think he was taken back, he couldn't finish before - though he did 'enter'. Risking the emotional link he has with her isn't worth it to him. Not being into his bronze bitch seems similar. Like he wants to have power, but doesn't want to murder his brother - yet. He's full on contradictions and something needs to push him over the edge (either rage, or rational). When he gave back the egg, Ray manipulated those exact contradictions. He wants power - but not at the cost of her. But he does set it up - only to kneel when push comes to shove. I saw this brother bit in the same light. He wanted to claim her and thwart his brother, but his rage/ego don't seem big enough yet. He's not willing to pay the price. Reaching his sexual release seems to be similarly out of reach. The things he wants are all out of his reach in that sense. Frustrating, I suppose - no wonder he drinks and is screwing around, not committing to any sort of future. You see this behavior in a lot of students and adolescents as well. Dodging responsibility, commitment, etc. by either going 'fck it', or by failing (a study, a relation, some promise, whatever). We see the cause of that too, Daemon is forgiven everything (basically because he was a good childhood friend to the king). Orwell's stories didn't end well on that premise.
What I find really interesting is when you watch the behind the scenes clip after the episode, one of the producers implied that Daemon probably feels guilt over using her and that's why he backs down. But the director saw the scene as him feeling emasculated because he wasn't expecting Rhaenyra to take charge, and that's why he smacks the wall and leaves her. I think both things can be true, it doesn't have to be entirely one reason or the other. That's what makes him so complicated and so interesting to watch.
@@robertwild9447 True, it's left really ambiguous which I love! It can be interpreted in so many different ways. I was half expecting Rhaenyra to run off or become agitated in the brothel as she's been so cloistered from that seedy underworld but like the free-spirit she is just opened herself to it, the thrill and danger of it excites her I think. Such a contrast with Alicent's predictable, routine, loveless love-making and here's Rhaenyra exploring her own sexuality on her own terms, even pulling rank on her own personal Kingsguard, he looked visibly uncomfortable but she got her way.
I truly think that whole scene was to shock Rhaenyra and use it to him advantage as the 'impressionable girl' she is. But when she* took control over the situation and actually show she wanted him, Daemon wasn't interested anymore. It's more a power game than a sexual thing.
@@dannhaleigh9573 Criston Cole is such a good guy, at least so far. You can see how much his vows mean to him, but he also does love her. It's such a complicated and unfortunate situation for both of them.
Man, RoP could really learn from this show when it comes to writing. So much is implied and is left to the audience to infer rather than treating us as stupid and spelling it out
for real, as a insanely huge lotr fan rop is utterly disappointing, compared to hotd i'm at the edge of my seat everytime an episode ends. The political tension between the characters is just insanely well done you just cant help but think what's gonna happen next.
I feel like Daemon was definitely working an angle with Rhaenyra, but I read it as he was working hard to actively awaken the blood of the dragon in her. He sees her need to rebel and how that aligns with his own and wanted to push that rebellion to the forefront by having her lean into the Targaryen recklessness. I think that's why he kept pulling away when she was trying to kiss him. It was to work her up and then not satisfy her so she could take some agency in her own sexuality. By being the person to awaken that in her, he builds himself up in her favor and primes her to be chaotic af.
Something the showrunners said after the episode kind of stuck with me: the reason why Daemon was impotent when he was with Rhae is because he knew that he was wrong and hurting his brother.
the whole purpose was to hurt his brother and to force him to get Rhaenyra and Daemon married. He on purpose took her to the brothels, took off her disguise and started making out, then left knowing the spies have seen enough. Daemon is just as bad as Otto really.
I was under the impression Targaryen incest was normalized? Caught me off guard so many people were shaming them 👀 didn’t the hand of the king suggest rhaenyra marry her little half brother ?
They allow the Targaryens to do it, but they don't like it. The old faith rebelled and tried to kill the previous king because of the incest until Jahaerys(king before Viserys) made a religious exception since they weren't normal men.
@@TonyMezaXD Lol. The king's parents were brother and sis!!!! Viserys' dead wife was his cousin! His anger when Daemon asked to marry Rhae was hypocritical.
@@stephen8805 i doubt that i can change your mind but a lot of it was dragged out because it was important for the director to show the pleasure of sex from a woman’s point of view and thus explore rhaenyras character further which ended up adding a lot to her. better than rushing it and just using it as a premise for huge consequences, the scene itself has an impact on rhaenyra and it is wonderfully shown
Let's be honest, the star of this show is King Viserys played by Paddy Considine. Amazing portrayal. He can go from midly amused, to concerned, to extremely angry in a few seconds. A joy to watch
I'm so glad people are discovering Paddy Considine! If you haven't seen Dead Mans Shoes, do yourself a favour and see it. One of the rawest movies ever made!
From my blood comes the prince that was promised, and his will be the "Song of Ice and Fire." This show really likes opening up those old wounds of The Season that shall not be named.
Daemon and Rhaenyra is the reverse of Dany and Jon, uncle and niece, aunt and nephew. Much as I hate to indulge their incestuous ways, that Daemon and Rhaenyra scene was spicy, far more sparks than Jon and Dany's faint embers.
@@asimhussain8716 It is better. It isn't padded with filler scenes and episodes. Everything is of consequence in this show. Even the Blackwood/Bracken duel seen in the background as Rhaenyra is leaving has meaning.
@@asimhussain8716 For me it is. Not sure why you have to "lol" that opinion. Even those early seasons (and certainly the books) were padded. HoD (so far) is not. I like that, it makes viewing more enjoyable and character development the focus. GoT already did the world-building so this show can take more time with the material that actually makes the story interesting.
Hey Jeremy, I haven't seen anyone comment it yet, but after the episode the writers and cast talk a bit about the episode. For this episode they talked about why Daemon stopped coming onto Rhaenyra and it was because of his impotence (which they mentioned in episode one) that's why he got mad and hit the wall.
Otto always knew Daemon was a bigger threat than Rhaenyra being he's a male heir. That's why he ratted on him about the ”heir for a day" comment and kept Daemon away from his brother. You can see Otto's reaction when Daemon returned to King's Landing on Caraxes. So if Daemon married Rhaenyra at least before Viserys dies, there would be no civil war. But nope. Viserys will banish Daemon again because of this rumor that Daemon took Rhaenyra's virginity. This leaves Viserys vulnerable like getting poisoned. Will be easier to overtake Rhaenyra's claim being she is a woman. And Otto will only make it worse by stating how promiscuous Rhaenyra is.
spoilers well Rhaenyra is kinda promiscuous throughout the show and books and people cant tell who the father of her children are. Otto has a point here. A male heir is better than a female heir. So much coming bloodshed could have been avoided if Rhaenyra was never made heir but just married off. King Viserys grew his balls too late. Daemon should be banished, Rhaenyra married off and Aegon should be named heir.
That Criston Cole scene was surprisingly intriguing. There were a lot of subtle hints that my dude is 100% not ok with what was happening but how does one say no to their boss in Westeros. If the genders were reversed twitter would be on fire I bet.
Said the Same thing with the Scott Summers/ Emma Frost thing and Twitter Laughed in my face. They only had a Mind Fuck yet people still Blamed Scott for the whole thing, I'm sorry who was the Manipulative Psychic there? Why do you think Jean was pissed at Emma not Scott. Scott was the Leader of the X-Men, in getting Close to Him she basically put herself on the throne cause she Psychic everyone else isn't.
In the books if I remember correctly, criston Cole straight up rejected when rhaneyra tried to seduce criston by opening up her legs. This act humiliated rhaneyra and made criston her #1 enemy, and what made criston choose alicent's side over rhaneyra. But in the show criston actually fucks her , so is criston joining rhaneyra's side when the war is on ?
@@ankitsaikumar6866 the books are biased. Both Mushtoom and the Septon or Maester whose name eludes me atm had an agenda in their retelling. This telling shows us both were right. In their own way. Daemon and Rhaenyra were indeed seen together and she was DTF, but her maidenhead was taken by a partially coerced Sir Cole.
haha, man can you imagine the writers and directors of that show and of course Bezos, watching House of the Dragon and then their own ROP....even with the huge budget..I mean it must be like watching an NFL game vs their touch football game
Daemon stopped because Rhaenyra was taking power in the moment. He can’t sexually perform when he’s not in control. Also, I think he wanted to do what he did in a public place hoping that word would get back to Otto, knowing that accusation would cause a rift between Viserys and Otto.
I think it's more that he actually had second thoughts about it because it felt wrong and he actually respects her. He's conflicted about it. That said, I also think your theory is possible. What I DO think for SURE - is that she will confront him about it... and that will be very interesting!
Idk if this has already been touched upon by the writers, but I love the symbolism behind Viserys's model of King's Landing that he's building in his chamber. His dream to continue building up his *real* kingdom has failed; and so his scale model has become a pitiful way for him to hold onto that dream. It's the only thing that doesn't fall apart when he touches it. Really excellent writing and detail happening with this show.
if he acted like this since the beginning, there would be no coming civil war. Daemon should be banished, Rhaenyra should be married off and Aegon II should be named heir.
I think a lot of people are overlooking how NOT into it Ser Cole was. Dude was hesitant the entire time and looked like he wanted to be somewhere else. I think he definitely felt pressured since she's the heir, but was also scared because of his position
Interesting take. I think most people, myself included, just read it as Ser Cole being hesitant because of the potential consequences of entering the princess' chambers both literally and metaphorically.
It’s funny how viserys is against incest as if his mother and father weren’t brother and sister, and as if his grandfather and grandmother weren’t brother and sister. That family tree has one branch
Is no one going to talk about how Rhaenyra literally lied through her Targaryen teeth 🙄 Yes, technically her and Daemon didn't fuck, but she absolutely would have had Damon decided to stay. Not to mention that she did lose her virginity to sir Criston... It's just crazy to me that she will then swear on her mother's memory that her virtue remains intact, and then acts like a victim when she gets caught for her actions👀 I don't think I've ever really seen another example of when a story shows you what happens and then shows another character lying about events, and other characters not knowing what to believe because they weren't there
yep. Rhaenyra is not innocent just like the king said. She even lied on her mother's memory. She said "Daemon did not touch me, I swear on my mothers memory". Look back at the episode and Daemon was touching her non stop. Lying on your mothers memory is pretty low. To the king Rhaenyra said: "If I was a man I could father a dozen bastards and no one would care" which confirms she is not a virgin anymore which is why the king sent the maesters to brew the potion. I like how this episode has kinda made Rhaenyra a more morally grey character because it shows she is ruthless like Daemon, she doesnt care about lying on her mothers memory and she gets others in dangerous situations to fulfill her own desires like sir Criston could be killed for sleeping with the princess
During the post-show review, the show runners said that Daemon couldn't get it up once Rhaenyra showed she was into it... so yeah, the reason he stopped wasn't as nice as you imagined Jeremy.
I like that your reviews are short and to the point. There are some reviewers out there that re-tell the entire episode that they review, scene by scene and the review ends up being as long as the show.
Thank you for doing these reviews, it's the first thing I check after the actual show. Also love reading the comments, I don't want to spoil it for others but one does not simply move on after this show.
Thankyou for mentioning that kid at the beginning- i watched that episode on my phone and had to rewind it several times cuz i thought at 1st, it was the other guy, then i was all," no way, that kid rules !"
Viserys is not disgusted that Deamon is her uncle. Viserys is angry because Rheaynera being a maiden is very important in order for her to be respectable and marryable.
I love how this episode continued to put characters in awkward situations and forced them to navigate through it. That being said, I find myself really disappointed with Daemon. After his triumph last week, I expected a whole lot more from him upon his return. Instead he (seemingly) made up with his brother (temporarily), tried to bang Rhaenyra, and then got kicked out while lying on the floor drunk/hungover. His presence felt way too quiet which makes me wonder if there's something deeper going on that I missed.
I thought Daemon didn’t do anything because he has bouts of impotence. But yeah, that squeaky voiced kid totally gutting the trash talker was awesome 😂
It's crazy how this show is showing you what actually and factually happened while the book is only told in the perspective of a maester and a midget. This whole rumor thing you get the events that happened while the book you're wondering what actually happened. Must be a great way to please book readers and first time viewers
I read the book years ago, so I remember the broad strokes, but it's generally kinda fuzzy -- which is perfect for watching the show because it's coming from different angles.
So if you watch the making the episode after they said that when the time came Damien couldn't do it. Not because he didn't want to. That's why he hit the wall, out of frustration. Is that dagger the one that Little Finger had that Tyrion won and was used to try to kill Brandon? I think it is. It fits with everything they said about it. I'm listening to the original GoT book and rewatching the show so it's fresh in my mind.
One small note that is kind of a nitpick, I dont like the whole "Prophecy" being passed down thing they keep implying, it feels like they keep trying to remind us that its GoT but that small detail is kinda silly when you consider Kings like Maegor the Cruel
It honestly just infuriates me that the talk of Azor Ahai led to Arya, like are you fucking kidding me. Prophesised for 100's of years, a prophecy hyped in the early seasons of GOT and Jon Snow not fighting/killing the Night King is the biggest mistake D&D made, like even after all these years i can't believe Arya killed the Night King. REEEEEEEEEEEEEE
@@skyz6708 it was a show fabrication created by Dumb & Dumber. George never gave them any info which would lead to such an ending. For one, the Night King doesn’t exist in the books.

That kid got a resounding “let’s go!” from us after that duel. A nice touch was how it took place in the background as Rhaenyra was leaving, it’s like this shit happens in King’s Landing all the time. Loved it.
