I feel like a lot of commenters are coming at this using future knowledge in judging our feelings towards characters. STOP IT! You are getting real close to spoiling things. We only have the knowledge of the episodes we have watched thus far.

A wedding on this franchise without at least one dead body is considered a dull affair.

The “look” the Hand gave to that big man was a signal from a father (Lynol Strong) to his son (Harwin Strong) to go save Rhaenyra. It wasn’t anything sneaky. The other man with the cane is the other son, Larys Strong (who’s actually the sneaky one).

Criston’s proposal wasn’t entirely out of love, if it was even that. He was being selfish as he wanted to rescue his honour which he petulant self revealed immediately after she refused to abandon her duty for infamy. He didn’t like her compromise, it was all or nothing for him.

Point 1: Driftmark and Dragonstone are the two islands, practically next to each other, in the Blackwater Bay, a little east off King's Landing. So, the area of King's Landing, Dragonstone and Driftmark is just a small triangle on the map. Point 2: The two guys the Hand aligns himself with are just literally his sons. The firstborn is the big boy knight; the secondborn the one with the cane, who was born with a clubfoot and therefore unfit for knight stuff, which is why he weasels in the shadows. Point 3: Alicent wearing a dress in green, House Hightower's color, the house of her father, after finding out that Rhaenyra has lied to her and taken the honor of her guard, is less a declaration of war but a declaration of Alicent's emancapation. She's done being the girl, she's entered her not putting up with Rhaenyra's bulls-hit anymore era.

The significance of Alicent's grand entrance, as I see it. Right up until the moment she learns Rhaenyra hasn't been totally forthright about Cristen, Alicent has trusted the princess. Now that she knows Rhaenyra is keeping something from her, she no longer trusts her, and Otto's warning now shakes her to the core. In HER mind, the threat against her house and her children just became real. It's war. Alicent Hightower has declared war. Epic scene.

Velaryons very much exist during the Game of Thrones. Driftmark is right next to Dragonstone in the Blackwater Bay and the Velaryons are thus sworn to Stannis. Daemon's and Rhaenyra's actions had nothing to do with Criston. He simply snapped. He betrayed his oath, his attempt of remedying it with Rhaenyra failed , his attempt at confession and punishment with Alicent failed, and now he has some smartass subtly threaten him thus presenting himself as a danger both to him and Rhaenyra. And so he attacked. What Lyonel Strong did was signal his son Harwin to remove the princess from a clearly dangerous situation. There is nothing sinister in that.

Regarding Criston Cole snapping, I think that was a case of his perception of Joffrey's very poorly presented comments... I believe that Joffrey was intending it as "Our paramours have secrets, we should have each other's backs to protect both them and ourselves", but Criston interpreted it as a threat to expose his breach of honor (which, as he commented to Alicent, could result in his death). On a lighter note: My popcorn of choice is Orville Redenbacher

I always thought Cole freaked out because Rhaenera married Laynor instead of running away with him. Joffery rubbing it in that they are just side pieces sett him off

I would say that Joffrey's sliminess in making a subtle threat to Cole, assuming they were the same kind of grifters to the highborn, triggered Cole's guilt over his corruption in bedding the princess.

Rhaenys kept her Targaryen name but her children are Velaryons. The same would happen with Rhaenyra’s children until one of them becomes the ruler.

Alicent's entrance is one of my favorite moments of the entire series and yet it remains confusing to so many. Even if Larys hadn't explained the significance of the color, her deliberate entrance at that time, was making a clear statement as a power independent from the King. I love her for it.

What a power move that was from the green queen. She arrives too late and then interrupts the king's speech and wears green. She has signaled to her house that she is ready, and they should be ready. Alisant's behavior here was absolutely disrespectful to the king, but since the king is just the way he is, he lets her get away with it and she knows it. With this performance, she has made it clear to everyone who really rules here. She proved this when she told the king that he had to support Damon in the war against the Crabeater. And of course, she doesn't do this only because Rhaenyra lied to her, but because she's afraid her children will be killed. Here, for the first time, the green queen act instead of always reacting to the shit that others are responsible for. All the shit in which the girlfriends turn against each other, others have staged and now no one can get out of it. Cole wants nothing more than to restore his honor and Rhaenyra should submit to it. That is his wish. The main thing is that his honor is restored. He doesn't care about Rhaenyra's honor that she loses when she flees with him. This knight only has a beautiful appearance, underneath it looks quite different. He then shows his other face at the wedding. An absolute animal. On top of that, he is also stupid as bread. Confesses the sexual contact with Rhaenyra to the Queen without her even mentioning his name. And knowing full well that the punishment by law is torture and castration. He only confesses in the hope that the Queen could be gracious and spare him that and kill him instead. Such a stupid bread. This knight is an extremist, bigoted, jealous, naïve and absolut dangerous and uncontrollable. His honor goes above and beyond, no matter what the cost. His life or that of others. He kills the other guy because he is simply another guy who now knows of his dishonor and had the impudence to talk to him about it. He is only concerned with himself and no one else. This is also shown by his suicide attempt. Suicide is always the greatest selfish act.

The thing is, Otto made that bullshit up. If Alicent and her kids acknowledge Viserys’ wishes, Rhaenyra will have no reason to want to harm them. Alicent is her best friend and the kids are her 1/2 siblings. There is zero indication that she’d be paranoid or aggressive in that way. Otto is just manipulating Alicent because HE doesn’t respect Viserys’ choice and wants his grandkids to be heirs.

Lyrs Harwin and Lionel (hand of king) are related. Lyrs and Harwin are brothers. They are all strong last name. Lionel is harwin and lyrs's father.

One of the more odd choices in season 1. Cole gets away with murdering someone at the pre-wedding gathering for no justifiable reason and also strikes Laenor. In the book the death happens during a tournament.

Alicent is jealous that Rhaenyra gets to enjoy her youth, love, AND keep her status. Alicent is duty-bound to make babies for Viserys, who is a kind man but not her teenage dream. So her resentment is starting to show, in addition to having drunk her father’s Kool-Aid. Criston is very angry that Laenor’s boyfriend thinks they are equals. They’re both going to be sidepieces, and Joffrey was just saying “hey we’re the same, bud! We both won!” and Criston was so disgusted at the idea that he flew off the handle. It is a reminder that he’s thrown away his “honor,” and *gasp* somebody knows about it! There is nothing more to it.
