I liked Aemond's expression, like the brother that hits his younger sibling a little too hard and realizes he's gonna get in trouble.

Can I just say, the "terrible" visibility at Storm's End during the thunderstorm was 3x clearer and easier to make out, than the night episode.

Having her sons swear on the seven pointed star that they would only go as messengers was directly from the book and it made a lot of sense. I am glad they added it. She was trying to avoid them getting killed or starting the first bloodshed.

Alex is the sort of guy who if he was dying of thirst and you gave him water he'd complain its a bit warm

Alex the dragons feel and share the riders emotions. In one of the first episodes Daemon got shot with an arrow while he was on his dragon and as he shouted with pain as did his dragon. I think Arrax felt how terrified Luc was and that’s when it panicked and F’d up by attacking Vhagar.

Alex is really reaching for things to complain about in this episode. 😂 The kid is too short? They shouldn't have made a promise on a Bible? What?

When Alex fails to dig for complaints you know its a good episode.

I think the swearing to avoid fighting was more for Jace anyways. He's at the age he wants to prove himself. And she's sending them alone on a mission and is a worried mother. She wants them to stay out of fights and come back to her. She explains that they have to follow the religion of the realm in that very scene as well I think.

GoT Season 8: Subverted expectations HOTD Season 1: Exceeded expectations

Went into this season expecting the worst, and came out pumped as hell for the next season. Kudos to the entire team that created this show.

The swearing on the book was foreshadowing the danger to come. To make a point that Luke was actively avoiding conflict, despite trouble seeking him out. Kind of feel like Alex was actively seeking out something to critique for the sake of being a critic. One thing I love about Joe is he enthusiastically loves and hates things. Giving credit when it’s due and praise when it’s deserved.

“The idea that the Targaryens control the dragons is an illusion.” This line was said twice before the foreshadowing came to fruition.

Kudos to the actor Elliot Grihault as Luc -- I loved his arc and was sad to see him go, but what a way to go! He did a good job and I teared up at his character's death. His death has unleashed the mama bear!

Joe's ability to get names wrong is epic

I can literally hear Alex grabbing the straws.

Costume design and casting roles were both 10/10. Incredibly well done.

HotD killed it. My only issue is what tf I am going to do for two years waiting for Season 2. What a freaking spectacular season. It not lived up to my expectations it surpassed it. It had EMMY deserving acting and the writing was flawless. We back in Westeros and I'm happier for it. Thank you HotD for bringing back the passion for this world. 🔥🔥🔥🔥

alex ability to nitpick the fuck out of unimportant shit is comical. even joe was like so what? amazing season. only con i can give it was the timejumps but they were a must so we gonna go up from here. writing,acting,music,action,cinematography,tension,costume design,cgi were all GREAT. 9/10 overall for season 1 for me. i came into this show super salty about GoT and it won me over after the first episode like that shit never happened.. lol

i love Alex’s eloquent critiques but man the nitpicking is a lot sometimes .. so awkward and unnecessary

I like the idea that they don't have complete control over their dragons. It gives the potential for the individual dragons to have their own personalities and also develop their relationships with their respective riders, and it can add another depth to the dragon fights in future seasons.

Alex is that one friend who's a "smart ass" that has an answer and critique for everything, bro was definitely reaching to find something wrong with the show lol.

I swear no matter how good a show can be Alex has a fucking problem 😂😂 I feel for Joe who enjoys the show and then gets depressed when he hears Alex’s nitpicks but it’s a great dynamic

I like that Alex is the harsh one, when it comes to these reviews but now it has become his whole personality to complain about the most simplest things.

AJ reaction to Alex complaining about the Westeros bible scene is so relatable and it’s a prime example why I can never fully watch this channel’s movie/show reviews. There’s a myriad of possible reasons why they included that scene but alex jumps straight to “sloppy foreshadowing” lol.

I love the fact that Aemond probably didn’t want to kill Luc. Not only because of the repercussions, but because he isn’t a monster yet. He was a bullied, misunderstood, reclusive child who got ungodly levels of power early on. He wanted to exact his pound of flesh for what he lost. Nothing more, nothing less.

Alex loves to hate scenes that don't play out the way in his head.

"F-around and find out," has been a recurring theme on many episodes of this show. From Chad Blackwood to Daemon slicing faces off. But Vhagar eating Arrax and Luke after it got a fireball to the face was the most clear example of the trope. Vhagar is like a WW2 veteran who's seen centuries of battles. Vhagar getting hit in the face was a death warrant for Luke and his dragon.

I really like how the conflict keeps getting pushed further and further despite people’s efforts to pull back. In ep 8 it was the adults trying to make peace and the kids who continued the fight. In this episode even the kids tried to pull back but this time the dragons were the ones to push the conflict further.

The dragon chase scene was one of the best scenes I seen after a long time. I thought i was watching a movie.

Over Critical once again Alex This episode worked great The setup for the second second season is incredible Overall what a first season!!

Having her sons pray before leaving that they wouldn’t fight is in the book though, regardless if it’s out of place or not…

Why does Alex have such a hard on against this show? It’s incredible yet he points out unnecessary minor flaws which are contradicted anyway

I totally agree that this show completely surpassed my expectations and has me reinvested in this world.

Alex's nitpicking was about such trivial stuff in this episode that even Joe pulled back from him a bit in disbelief for once. Honestly, Alex should just stick to gaming content where he's pretty good. With TV reviews, he always has these weird ass nitpicks that either don't make sense, are wrong and he'd rescind if properly explained to him, and often just seem petty for no apparent or clear reason. It takes a special someone to be able to annoy commenters even after giving episodes good scores and admitting to really enjoying them.

My favorite show this year for sure. Solid all around, Daemon Targaryen is a fookin legend. 9/10 for me.

I felt Alex’s take on the swearing on the book scene was weird and just a bad take tbh - he seems to forget that this is a deeply religious world and the queen is talking to kids……….while yes she and her house are not massively religious they still believe in the stuff like any other house. And as I say, she is talking to literal children. Having kids swear on the ‘bible’ as it were in a world like this was just simply to cement the seriousness of her order for them to go as just messengers. The final point here is that it wasn’t some weird last minute decision by the writers, it was in the book so it definitely is part of the story and makes perfect sense. No disrespect to Alex here, he is often the only voice of sense on these movie reviews (particularly during stuff like She Hulk) but his take here is just moronic and ill thought out.

First thing Alex says about the episode: “Why is the Baratheon so short?” 🤓 That’s such a nitpick I thought he was joking at first.

@Alex the kids essentially have nukes, she told them not to fight because she knew how easy it was if someone declined to declare for her house how tempted her kids could be to burn them all to the ground. This episode was just amazing all the way through. Love you guys

Alex so ready to critique everything it causes him to ironically not pay close enough attention to realize he’s missing important dialogue. 😅

I was hoping they were gonna mention the map of Westeros lighting up. that was pretty sweet. and that shot of Arrax above the storm was incredible.

I do find it kind of funny imagining that it’s going to be a mainstay of the series that Otto and the Grand Maester will come to Dragonstone, Daemon will march down the causeway, they’ll bicker before their respective sides draw swords on each other and then Rhaenyra flies in on Syrax to diffuse the situation given the exact same thing has happened twice already. 😂 Like every time one of them needs something from the other, we do this song and dance over and over again for the rest of the war. 🤣

This season was absolutely epic with a good finale episode!

The sky is blue, water is wet, grass is green, and Alex will literally find anything to nitpick about no matter how good

So the writing went past Alex head on that. She made them also swear not to fight because the older brother has a hot head as they show on the episode on how hard he goes on his smaller brother. That’s also why he hesitated for a second. That part made perfect sense.

The show made me fall in love with GOT all over again. Great actors, superb writing team, dedicated and passionate directing and characters we can invest in. Cannot wait for S2 and hope ROP learns some lessons from this 🙏

Alex she was grabbing her nieces to the table because she used to be a cup bearer for Viserys. She is trying to be better then her farther by letting Baela and Rheana actually be involved in the politics.

This series has been fantastic so far. The writing, production, direction, music etc. The casting is excellent, especially Daemon and older Aemond. Different vibe from GoT but still familiar, as it should be. Cannot wait for the next season 🙏🙏

By law she HAD to have her children swear on the 7 that they were being sent as a messenger and nothing more, and people have to witness the swearing. Now if any hard comes to her children it is considered a war crime and even treason.

What I’m interested in seeing is how Aemond decides to handle this. Does he go back and simply state he killed him intentionally, as was written in Fire and Blood, or is that a narrative change orchestrated by Otto to further his war?

Sometimes Alex has trouble over some of the most inconsequential and littilest things. So much so that he keeps looking for something to complaint about smh

I really liked that they delved into the war planning in this episode, the characters standing around the table discussing tactical advantages. I really look forward to season 2 and I hope that this season did the huge time jumps to prepare us for this episode and what took place, for season 2 to be straight deep story and war and war planning. I am really excited for what’s to come.

Worst part about this finale is that we gotta wait till 2024 for the next season. For me this show was a 10 for 10 in terms of not a single weak episode. Each episode was worthy of being a blockbuster finale in other shows

This is by far the biggest reach I have ever seen Alex make. Dude was too short? Swearing on the bible made no sense? It would literally kill Alex to just talk about an amazing episode without finding something to complain about.

They made them "lose control" of their dragons, which made zero sense - why would a tiny little dragon even attempt to fight that big dragon? Errr.... They had Aemond laughing like a school shooter at the end chase scene and then when he loses control of the dragon he's like "no! bad dragon!" like he took his dog for a walk and it pooped on someone's lawn. The whole scene was just for dramatic effect, the book version would've been fine here. They're just simply bad at adaptations and want to do this whole shock and awe tactic with a sprinkle of controversy here and a sprinkle of confronting scenes there. It's just a mind numbing experience meant for those without a brain, people enjoying it pretty much prove it, the way they talk about these overhyped shows, comparing it to rings of power like it's a good thing it's better? That's like comparing a turd to a turd with vomit on top, you really going to sit there and admire it? You're all sad and pathetic.

Joe is realizing how ridiculous Alex's criticisms are. At first it was the time jumps (ok) but now it's "this guys too short" and "I didn't like them swearing an oath of peace on a bible". Give it up Al!

You need to remove Alex from TV reviews. The guy finds something to complain about every single time. He's boring, and frustrating to listen to.

A rare Alex miss for me. BUT I totally agree that they go out their way to soften Alicent and Rhae to absolute saints. It’s total BS and so obvious. People loved Cersei and she was allowed to do horrible things. You can have ambitious, cruel and aggressive women. I know the 2022 audience can still handle it. It’s just looks really forced imo.

As a book reader, the tragedy over storm’s end was one my favorite events in ASOIAF, up there with Red Wedding. And I was extremely satisfied with how they executed it both through the extra weight added between the characters (Aemond laughing manically and shouting in High Valaryian) and of course the amazing cinematography. That shot of Luke turning around to see Vhagar growling will go down in the fantasy history books.

Who knew the underdogs, House of the Dragon and Andor would be two of the best shows on television?! Thanks fellas for this seasons recaps every week! Great stuff.

Alex, that was not a fucking errand lmao. These kids are being asked to send what are basically threats of wars to powerful lords if they don’t take the queen’s side while flying nuclear weapons

This was the PERFECT spot to end it on. And I love that they're playing into the biggest thing about the Dance of Dragons; it's told by unreliable narrators. Both in the book, and History and Lore of Westeros. One of my favorite things about the History and Lore of Westeros, is it was REALLY fascinating hearing about the Dance of Dragons from Catelyn Stark, Joffrey Baratheon, Robert Baratheon, Viserys Targaryen, Dany's brother, Oberyn Martell, and Shireen Baratheon. All these different POVs tell a different part of the story. Viserys calls Viserys I Rhaenerya's father a fool for his actions and lack of actions. Catelyn tells of a mother's loss, and you can understand her sympathy. Robert is the one who tells the story of Lucerys' death, and there's no love loss there, so you can't really tell if Aemond MEANT to kill Lucerys or not. According to some, he did. But here, not so much. Joffrey GLEEFULLY recounts the final moments of Rhaenyra Targaryen, while Oberyn Martell tells of the story of Daemon's last stand and you hear the respect in his voice. It's incredible. And seeing this story come to life was done brilliantly.

There is some haywire in Alex‘s brain that makes it impossible for him to not nitpick.

This is what's called excellent writing. How am I supposed to watch any other kind of serialized show when nothing is anywhere near as good.

Alex, the show went out of its way to emphasize the friendship between Alicent and Rhaenyra. Despite the quarrel at the dinner with the kids, Alicent and Rhaenyra "seem" to try to squash the beef. (Unlike the book.) Hence why both are hesitant to go straight into war despite their agendas. Moreover, Rhaenyra (for now) seems to take after her father in terms of negotiations.

In regards Alex on Rhaenrya n her kids, I think she remembers what happened the last time they were unsupervised..stakes even higher now. Was just to stress importance

Having a critical eye like Alex is good for the dynamic for sure, but bro. Sometimes he sounds like he’s actively trying to look for some shit to be dissatisfied with. Rhaenyra is sending her kids on a mission as envoys to recruit houses to their cause, but she doesn’t want them getting hurt, or doing anything brash to kick off a conflict before she’s ready for one. They’re children. You get children to promise not to do things and they’re less likely to do them out of fear of disappointing their gods or a loved one, especially their mother. Plus the scene was in the book man, what else do you need brother

I actually really like what you’re calling “softening” the queens. I think them not immediately wanting to put the whole realm into war is very wise and shows restraint. It shows that they are both products of their King, Father, and Husband. That they actually loved him and listened to his last plea for them to get along. If they were so quick to kill each other than King Viserys would have meant nothing. I think certain betrayals could be forgiven for the sake of preserving a legacy of peace. But the murder of a son, now that’s something worthy of starting a war. So no, I don’t think Daemon was right about everything. I think he’s important, but was clearly only thinking about strategy and not seeing the whole picture. Very excited for the next season. I would have given it a 10/10
