In this video, using a 36 inch aluminium spray shield, I show you a quick and easy technique to spray the eaves or the soffit underneath your roof on your house.
Appreciate the nitty-gritty tutorial, calm demeanor, and pre-emptive answers to elementary questions first-time exterior painters like me have, e.g. equipment, costs, etc. I kept thinking "who do you sound like?" and had to laugh at the preceding respondent who nailed it.
I gave up on spray shields. After meters of spraying the shield ends up with a thick layer of paint which wants to go places you don’t want it. Plus the stop start of spray, adjust the shield, spray adjust the shield. Now I take the time to mask up and the spraying is an effortless and simple process.
I purchased a spray shield that attaches to a roller extension pole. You can tape cardboard stripes to the shield that extend the full length plus two feet past each end. Have a helper stand behind you with the pole over your head. It is much faster than doing it by yourself.
Thanks for the demo and the tips. I’m determined to do many things about my house myself to save money. So here I am with soffit that is charcoal colored. I’m changing it to white. The fascia and gutters will be white too so I just have to protect the roof. My question is, going from charcoal soffit to white- is that going to require the same 313 tip? Do you recommend certain type of paint and/or paint company? Behr exterior house paint ok?
I would use a 211 tip for those tasks. Especially the gutter. I recommend a quality paint. Putting all this work into a project and using a cheap paint, not that you would Cheryl ( but a lot of people read these answers and so I speak to everyone) isn’t worth it. High end? Marquis exterior end. Medium: Behr ultra paint and primer included.
You’ll have less overspray w an fflp tip and they make longer shields, I use 5 so I can rotate them as they become heavy w wet paint while a helper hoses the paint off and waves them dry so I only have to stop for ladder moves. Lay a long drop w weights or magnets over the roof if it’s windy to shield any overspray. Keep your gun steady so the fan is perpendicular to the soffit w a 50% overlap if using an orifice .013-.015 25%, if paint formula requires anything bigger like .016-.019, to get the appropriate mils otherwise the paints’ warranty/guarantees wont hold true. If I don’t have helpers I’ll take the time to tape up paper instead of shielding the body of the house and only shield fascia since it’s a pain in the butt to keep paper wet w paint from flipping towards the fascia.
That’s an excellent question! If you use a 517 tip, you will plug all of those perforations! However, I am using a 200 series tip and when you use a smaller tip like I am using here, there is not enough paint to come out they will clog those perforations. Thanks for watching
@@spencercolgan is this something most professional painters will know? We need to have our soffit painted to match the new gutters but am worried about it clogging the vented ones.
