Welcome to stunning Marlsgate Plantation, and our historic home tour of this remarkable gem! Marlsgate sits at the site of a Plantation Plain home, built in the antebellum period by the Dortch family. From 1885 to 1913, the Dortch family farmed the 7000 acres of this plantation with the help of 100 tenant farmer families.
This amazing neo-classical revival home resembles a Greek Revival, but as it this beauty was built in 1904 that places her style in the Neo-Classical Revival period. Inside you'll find 14' ceilings, all of which are adorned with pressed tin decoration. Ionic style columns flank a grand central staircase, leading to gorgeous stained glass and a monumental second floor landing.
This beautiful historic home remains much as it was when it was built in 1904. The grounds contain buildings from 1888-1930, one of our favorites being the glass conservatory with koi pond. You'll also see a glimpse of the original plantation "big house', which is a much more acurrate example of plantation architecture than the few high style greek revival or italianate styles that have become synonymous with the era due to Hollywood glamorization.
Sitting across from Bearskin Lake this beautiful early 20th century historic home is now the site of weddings, corportate events, cooking classes and bus tours. Added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1975, followed by the Dortch Planation in 1979. If you are ever in Arkansas don't miss your chance to see Marlsgate Plantation.

The symmetry of the grand staircase is a jaw-dropper. I too love the sun room with hand-painted tiles, and the conservatory. It's interesting to compare the level of detail that could be achieved with tin ceilings, versus plaster. I do wonder what maintenance is required for the tin. The furnishings are beautiful and so tasteful. I have a china cup and saucer hand-painted by my husband's great-aunt Ethel. I believe it was a common activity for ladies of talent at the time. Great story. You were especially glowing over this one, Laine, and I'm not surprised. (Love your blouse...my favorite color!) Great drone work, Kevin. Thank you!

Absolutely beautiful home. I’m impressed that so much of the original buildings and land remain! I also appreciate that you showed the true “planter’s home”. So often people don’t realize that in most cases the word plantation was equivalent to farm, very few lived as Gone With the Wind would have us believe. My grandparents lived in one of those homes and although it had beautiful 14 foot ceilings, giant porches, etc. it wasn’t a mansion by any measure. Also loved that she painted china. My great grandmother painted china and I have some of it. I also have her antique French Haviland (service for 14) and it is clear to see that Haviland, Limoges, and Nippon influenced her greatly.

Thank you so much for this tour. I have driven by Marlsgate multiple times to gawk at it, but I've never seen the interior. The ceilings are amazing. If you haven't been to Choctaw down in Natchez, the owner (David) used to own Marlsgate. He loves to show his collection of heirloom antiques, and he is very entertaining. Also, if you like half tester beds, there's a great antique store over in Alexandria, Louisiana (not far from Natchez) that has some nice ones.

That melon pink (or pink melon?) *glow to that master bedroom, the Autumnal field scene depicted in those tiles above the mantel in the family room , Kevin's favorite (I agree, thought dynamic) tin ceiling (third floor?), and as well - that very Victorian-in-feel (very "Crystal Palace-esque") hot house - my goodness! Yes, very special place. Thank you for the share.

I toured this home in April 2021 and it was so beautiful. As we entered the front door we were greeted by the gracious owners, Beau and Martha Ellen, and their hospitality was amazing. We were served a refreshing beverage of Marlsgate 1888 Punch, followed by a tour of the beautiful outside grounds, then a delicious lunch in the dining room, and topped off with a tour of the vintage house. We learned a lot of history about the plantation and I would absolutely recommend adding this to your list of places to visit.

I do think that the word is pronounced "teester" not "tester" and is sometimes spelled that way. If you have heard differently, please enlighten me. And the glass panel at the top of the door may have been to allow in more natural light.
@OurRestorationNation
@OurRestorationNation 2 года назад
Pardon the expression, but “teester” is a Southern bastardization of the word. TEST-er is the pronunciation used in Europe (where the style originated) and in other parts of the US.

@vernicethompson4825 2 года назад
@@OurRestorationNation Thank you so much for clarifying that for me! I have lived in Virginia for over 30 years and have thought the Southern pronunciation was preferred. I am glad to learn that it is regional. I can only guess at how it arose. I enjoy your video tours!

Thanks for the tour of the wonderful building and it's history. I understand your time is limited but It would be interesting to myself and maybe others to see a behind and below the paint and panels focusing on structure and systems. I really enjoy the tours of Longwood's uncompleted floors and Biltmore's behind the scenes tour for a look at the boilers and build structure. I had the good fortune to have a beyond the ropes tour and discuss the restoration and also building furniture replicas of the Hermitage by Alf Sharp a well renown and respected craftsman. The homes you feature my not be as famous as some but are just as interesting as the Natchez home tour or the Mansions of Newport and deserve a deeper look into the people who and how construction and sourced the materials to build the wonderful places.
