I did some research about this place and saw this. It is about one of the names written on the walls, Narcissa. "Its history includes the story of the death of Narcissa Jane Childers, their daughter, who refused to give up the handsome young son of the plantations' overseer. She was locked in an attic room on the third floor, until she agreed never to see him again. Three times aday, a large silver tray of food was brought up to her. She could eat if she promised to give up her lover. Three times a day the tray was returned untouched to the kitchen. She vowed that she would remain true to her one and only love. Day after day, week after week passed and she ate nothing. At last death mercifully end the romantic struggle. She died at the age of sixteen and today her tombstone lies at the front steps of the Arlington Plantation, as a reminder of unrequited love."

I enjoyed your tour...wow. I feel privileged when I get to tour old homes. America's history can be painful,it often is. When you step into private places and discover lives lived and sometimes how they died it can be life changing. People in those times had a whole set of trials and tribulations we can't fathom...we can talk about them but really let's admit we wouldn't want them. This house is a step back, it's architecture and style is truly lovely,it expresses the time,and the finances of the builder and the craftsman they hired.

So much in that home that's waiting to be restored! I lean toward preservation rather than restoration, at least to some point in time, to include more of the home's history. I owned a 1700s farmhouse, and I kept some of the "improvements" done in the late 1800s because they made the house more interesting and functional. For some of the houses you show us it would be helpful to see a hand-drawn floor plan so that we can keep track as you move from room to room.

I love what you do! Thank you for doing it! Just one suggestion, it seems you jump around from floor to floor. It's hard to picture the layout of the home. And also, the stairways and hallways of an old home are beautiful, it would have been nice to see the main stairway. Again, you're doing great, thank you! But could you please show the layout so we can picture the house in our minds?

I wonder if the woodwork was painted white inside originally. I would love to see much of the wood stripped of the years of paint.

This period of home would have have painted woodwork. Painted woodwork was the standard from colonial times right up until the Prairie/Craftsman period.

Conceivably a few construction workers who started working in the 1790s could have been running or at least directing a building crew in the 1830s, especially if they were master builders and in demand. I don't think master carpenters from the 1790s were concerned with following new-fangled "trends" of the 1830s.

From all angles? Will you be telling the history from the perspective of the servants?
@laineeden
@laineeden 3 года назад
Laine here; I think you mean from the perspective of the enslaved peoples who lived and worked here. The word “servant” is not used in this context as it implies some degree of choice in the arrangement. This homes original owner manumitted his enslaved people upon his death. We don’t own this property so we don’t have many particulars to share about either the enslaved peoples or the original owners, so we can’t tell either of the personal perspectives clearly. What we are telling in this video is purely the architectural history of the place, as American architecture has a narrative all its own. When we are fortunate enough to have specific details about the names and personal details of all the people who lived and worked in a particular home we share them all, through the lenses of history and learning. If you’d like to have a better view of our mission and views you can learn much more on our Instagram account @outrestorationnation

@@laineeden Thank you for your response. I do know the difference between slaves and servants. I used that term servant because that's the term you used. If you mentioned that the slaves were freed by the original owner I must have missed it and I apologize. However, being a servant at that time, only slightly improved ones lot in life. I already follow you on Instagram. I must admit I haven't taken the time to read your mission. Also don't get me wrong, I'm not trolling you. I love watching the videos. My husband grew up in such a home in Springfield TN. He and I are both well aware of the differences in the life styles between those who owned the properties and those who worked the properities. Sometimes, when one speaks of the history of a property I forget that the "history" can take on different roles when you break it down, as you are doing with the history of the architecture. Thank you for your time.

@@loriereedy4198 I had ancestors who immigrated to this country as indentured servants. Not slavery at all but as they weren’t paid wages you can see that even people with more modest means could have servants.

As a historian and a former guide at a well know plantation in Nashville prehaps I can help. Unfortunatley, much of enslaved people's history isn't documented. Remember the slaves, for the most part and by law, were illiterate thus diaries and journals and letters, etc of their lives do not exist. To be able to interpret the enslaved at this site depends on if any documentation of the slaves from this particular site exists. Sometimes a site may be fortunate to actually have primary sources to interpert to tell their stories but more so then not, they don't have much. We found that often we would only have a few names of some slaves and no names accounted for the rest. That made the search even harder! What hurts the most as a neutral historian is we often become the target of political correctness. If we don't have anything to go on and interpret enough of the enslaved then we are accused of "white washing and not telling their story". Then on the other hand, if we do have primary sources and tell the slave's stories we are accused of "gloryifing slavery".

I was going to ask this same question. I just found this channel yesterday and have watched many videos since. And the WHOLE time I’ve been wondering how many of these houses have resident ghosts? Especially since many have been handed down over and over to family members.
