A significant grande dame of the area’s historic mansions, regal Magnolia Hall, circa 1858, sits atop a slight plateau at the northeast corner of Pearl and Washington Streets in uptown Natchez, Mississippi. Designed by Massachusetts architect and engineer J. Edwards Smith as the family home of Natchez native and cotton magnate Thomas Henderson, Magnolia Hall is an imposing Greek Revival structure with an opulent Ionic portico and interior Italianate embellishments in vogue “up East” at the time, most notably its marble mantels and floral designs of the center-hallway cornices and parlors’ ceiling medallions with their magnolia flourishes that influenced the mansion’s later name. Equally intriguing is Magnolia Hall’s brownstone exterior-walls of brick, stuccoed and then painted and scored the academically researched, original lush chocolate, replicating the modern mansions of the affluent and refined families (“Brownstoners”) of New York City and other notable up-east cities of the time. Interestingly, mid-nineteenth-century Natchez boasted over a hundred brownstone structures; Magnolia Hall is one of only two remaining and the only one restored.
In 2016, when the members of The Natchez Garden Club and its endorsed non-profit Preservation Society of Ellicott’s Hill began the vast exterior renovation of Magnolia Hall, they received from the Mississippi Department of Archives and History a substantial grant. Among its directives, this grant required that the facade, both its walls and majestic columns, must be returned to its historically accurate color-a well-kept secret that lay beneath over a century and a half of paint and patchwork. The resulting bold and innovative restoration has warranted praise for its historic accuracy in scraping away the layers of inauthentic color and inauthentic southern lore and replacing it with the genuine grandeur of its origin and honest reflection of its era. This historic home is open for tours daily.

I thoroughly enjoyed this! The docent was so knowledgeable about everything in the home, including the ladies crafts, which I found fascinating. Even the history of the Garden Club. Must be some formidable women to track down and get people to donate some of the items on display. There is so much I loved about this home!

Oh my. How I wish I could afford to just spend one weekend in the mansion. The Garden Club has done an amazing job restoring this treasure. The dresses, the rooms, the silverware, the mansion as a whole is just incredible. Their attention to detail is magnificent. I want to thank the Garden Club for doing such a masterful job at restoring this Antebellum Greek Revival beauty. Thank you Laine and Kevin for posting this lovely video! I can't wait to see the next house tour video. See y'all in the next one 👍👍🥰🥰🤗🤗😘😘

I'm going through a bit of a Greek Revival appreciation phase, so thank you for sharing this gorgeous restoration. I cringed when he said the ceilings were lowered, damaging the plaster work, and selling off the mantles and gasoliers.

The irony is that it was a school that did damage to the house; must not have offered history in the curriculum. Great and informative tour of the home, and it was fun to learn about the garden clubs Royal Court. Also, loved the outdoor iron fishtank fountain.

Beautiful doesn't begin to do justice to this mansion. Stunning breathtaking are words that come to mind. I know it comes down to money but how and why did we lose the beauty & graciousness not to mention the quality of these homes. I think very few people truly understand or appreciate a way of life that is lost to time. Thank you for this gorgeous walk through time

I'm thinking that I may have to add a visit to Natchez to my bucket list! Those ceiling medallions were breathtaking. I chuckled when the docent revealed that the carpet pattern was of horse chestnut; it's a common tree here in the PNW, though we don't have edible chestnuts. What a fascinating home history. Good job, Natchez Garden Club!

It was excrutiating to hear about how it was converted into a school with acoustical tiles and walls torn down and furnishings and light fixtures removed, sold. My heart hurt for the family who had to auction it off to pay debts. It seems after the original owners lost it, the house was really devastated before it got to the hands of people who could restore it to its former beauty and love it for what it was originally intended to be.

We restoration folk know that 'drop ceiling with acoustic tiles' are dirty words, lol. I'm glad the ceiling ornaments have been restored along with other aspects of the property. I loved learning about the craft kits that kept ladies of leisure occupied. Really interesting. The outdoor aquarium/fountain is amazing! I've never seen one of those before. The clothing displays and other artifacts of the period (really glad to see original family items returned to the house) really add to the ambience of the home. Kudos to the Garden Club!

I’m new to your channel and seeing these homes is fascinating. Often we hear about how the civil war ravaged cities and towns, and these homes and their stories being a glimpse of what life was like. The change in lifestyle is exceptionally profound to learn. As the servants secured their freedom and had to sort their lives, these families did too. Very interesting to learn about these homes.

"When people were bathing twice a month." Priceless! This tour guide is awesome! I immensely enjoyed touring this house. Magnolia Hall, I immediately recognized that Glen Auburn mansion (not Auburn) was across the street when I saw the aerial view! Magnolia Hall's interior is beautiful! The library would be my favorite room. Observation: Mr. Henderson's former office had a man that resembles Kevin in a mirror. Another fantastic video, L&K! Til the next time......

This was very informative, and I absolutely loved it. Several items elicited "wows!" from me as I can't believe they still exist - especially since the devastation of the Civil War. Now a days we live in a "throw away" society, so everything would have been donated to Goodwill, etc. or completely trashed, particularly upon ones' death.

At one time, I owned a Greek Revival house that had not been kept or restored nearly as well as this. But it did have several of the features this one has, including one of the three original Cararra Marble mantels, including the summer cover. It looked just like the ones shown here. The stairs were also very similar and it had a beautiful transom over the front double-doors. I had wanted to restore it completely but was never able to do it. :( Ah, well.
