you also have that phos is trying to fight a cult of personality in whichever place he decides to confront, go to the lunarians and face self destruction through their leader's obsession with fading away - go back to sensei and face the obsession of parenthood and being handed a purpose, facing destruction at the hands of the children that sensei has molded to his ends. even if phos wasn't in a dark place as a person he simply wouldn't have a place for wanting to seek the truth because he's stuck between two cults that desperately need to hide information and the truth to function - sensei isn't without fault as he has indoctrinated his children fundamentally to reject what phos is, and it's why cinnabar has no second thoughts about destroying her once only friend. phos is pretty much the only bird that has successfully left the nest and hasn't either just stayed in one or jumped to another. in a sense he's the only real "adult" gem in land of the lustrious aside from the swiss cheese fucker. but yeah full doomer mode engaged please end me edit: also love your analysis vids and hope you can find a way to continue to broaden the content you can cover sometime, for now these vids are GEMS in their own right ha HAhaaHa

I always wondered why Ishikawa made it so that the lunarians can only turn into nothingness (basically enlightenment) with the help of a machine, because in buddhism you can’t rely on anyone but yourself. But I just realized the three races were once what made up a human, so it’s actually just a huge ass metaphor of the different thoughts and forces inside a single person. So phos forcing Adamant to work is technically correct. Enlightenment isn’t just gonna open the door for you. It’s neutral and compassionate, and it can’t tell you the truth (just like how adamant can’t tell them why he won’t pray). Adamant is the key to enlightenment but he is too attached to activate, for every being would turn into nothingness. It’s a great analogy for how technically we all hold the key, but we can’t see it or use it because of our attachments. Phos’ willingness to destroy everything is actually admirable and correct according to buddhism because you have to let go off all the attachment first. Then you restart. Phos is our will to achieve enlightenment, thus every living thing tries to get him to stop. The earth gems that go against phos, the moon gems that start to not care about phos, the lunarians that aren’t helpful at all, are really just elements of our mind bashing against each other. It’s like the process of meditating. One voice wants to be at peace and hundreds of other thoughts try their damn hardest to disturb that. No wonder being phos is suffering. I always wondered why does Phos have to deal with all these uncooperative people until I realized they are all part of one mind. The three races are all connected and any action affects another. Like how in order to get the old gems back together, the admirabilis would have to die. In order to turn the lunarians into nothingness, the other two races will be reset as well. And it’s interesting how as Phos does the dirty work, all the gems become happier.

5:40 another great piece of evidence supporting the idea that Phos is becoming more human is how his body's composition changes. We know that humans split into 3 according to the Admirabilis (Gems, Adimrabilis, and Lunarians). And Phos is part gem, part Admirabilis (his legs came from Aculeatus), and part Lunarian (his eye), which makes him more human than any other character in the series.

I also notice how gems are driven by purpose. Its often stated(especialy earlyer on) that people find purpose in labour. When a gems purpose becomes impossible or invalid they snap. This happend to rutile since paparascha was fixed by some one else. This might also explain why phos didnt break when coming to the moon, her goal was not to fight lunarians but to find the connection to them en sensei. This goed for all the other gems that went. They had there own reason for being there which didnt get subverted because of knowing the lunarians true nature. Just food for thought

Just caught up to the latest manga chapter, and holy shit, I had to lie down on my bed because I feel so sad for Phos, the suffering they went through was terrible. I didn't like the anime as much as others, but I'm glad(STILL DEPRESSED AF rn) that I gave the manga a try. Holy fuck, I cant cry for Phos, but my heart is aching at their agony

At around 3:15 to 3:30 I made a mistake saying that Phos has felt the passage of time. They didn't because they weren't conscious. For some reason I didn't notice that the previous panels were Sensei putting them back together after being in pieces that whole time. Ima' dingus I guess.

I never really saw it as a defect before, I just thought that Kongo was so afraid of being alone again that he was willing to suffer for that little bit of joy.

Next time will be Kemurikusa. If you haven't watched it, you must immediately cleanse yourself of this transgression and view it. It's easily one of the most original things since Houseki. (it's on Amazon just like Houseki too so you shouldn't have a problem finding it if you're a prime guy.)

Update: So I found the problem, I wasn't able to get a high quality mp4 because "frame reordering" was selected. This caused massive artifacting. Note to anyone using Davinci Resolve, don't ever leave frame reordering selected. I won't bother re-uploading though since everyone's already seen this, but man does all the .mov compression bug me. PS: Who else loves Synthwave?

Haven't read the manga, haven't fully watch the anime (just compilations of funnies and diamond breaks throughout the season) but this video.... the story of Phos' development into accepting reality, or the whole arc of the story itself, is really a phase where I am at right now. Yes we are born happy/free, but when reality kicks in, we are left to our own devices (growing up). We are ourselves a free spirited person. The direction inside us is telling the truth on where to go after you realized that you are responsible for your actions after this (not your parent, or other people/organisation). It's just that... do you choose to hate those who raise you wrongly? And live alone/start again? Or use whatever you have today to create better future? Man this anime/manga is dark. It's psychologically true. You will experience this. Shiet.... ok I better go watch something else, shit's dark. Thank you for the video, it's very cool.

every time i think of HnK it makes me sad for phos. With the development of the recent chapters though i feel like a happy ending might not be in sight. That said i'm looking forward to seeing phos and cinnabar talk again and also what rutile has been up to. Will you be analyzing more chapters in the future?

I really enjoy your perspective on houseki no kuni. I don't remember reading/viewing this kind of perspective on sensei before. Everything I've seen either vilifies him or absolves him from all blame. Great job ^_^ Everyone goes on about how much of a failure phos is but I would argue that phos succeeded in their job, they made a great discovery: how to become human.

Houseki has easily rocketed to being my number 2 or 3 favorite manga/anime. But like you said in the first episode of your series, this story isn't just about 'I can suffer wider than you can.' its about slow and natural changes that bring about meaningful commentary on the world, on humanity, on buddhism/escape from suffering etc. I hope that Ichikawa has the skill and mastery to end the series with that intriguing and mysterious air that made me admire it so much in the first place. Because right now, the cut and dry depression express seems to be steaming full speed ahead with no signs of stopping

damn that joke with yellow hits a bit different, especially around 2:25. (okay so hold up, this is going to sound real fucking dumb...but) I always loved and empathized the Idea that as your experience in life, including you memories of your past and how you relate to them, gets examined by this manga. I've re-read Houseki no Kuni a few times and (the semi-relevant effect of) knowing what happens next has definitely influenced my interpretation of it. The first time I read It, I saw Phos losing whole parts of himself, and having to fill in the gaps of himself with his observations of what was around him and a few of his memories which remained and how he rationalized that. But as of my recent re-reading of Houseki no Kuni, I realize that he fills the gaps in his memories with his motives, goals, and beliefs. those such things that don't really dwell within a specific memory, but within the whole of his personality. So what we see in the manga is the shaping of a personality stripped of the memories that made it. A kind of crazy super-representation of ideals converging without the base, that found and would ground them... meh I'm drunk and this manga makes me think too much... happy new years~

Seeing some of the panels of Gormie with Aechmea makes me wonder how the anime is going to adapt them. Especially with the gem's… character design differences. Wait! Just remembered that one shot of Jade in episode 9 (I think). Which actually doesn't put me at ease.

I wonder how things could have been if sensei was honest from the start? Of course some gems might have slipped into the pattern of blaming him for their war with the lunarians but if they knew sensei would obliterate all of them i think they would have understood.

You know, if sense just told phos what he told the rest of the gems after phos's initial attack, all of this would have been avoided. Instead his fear and selfishness pushed phos to find her own answers........which didnt exactly end well. *SPOILERS* Its really messed up that everyone BUT phos ends up with a happy ending. But it was because of phos's sufferings and efforts against them that they ended up being saved. What exactly is the message of this manga anyways?!?
